Void Breaches are related pickups, not a seventh status effect. The keywords have distinct combat jobs, so the best one for a build depends on whether you need sustain, protection, control, damage amplification, or explosions.
The six Void effects at a glance
| Effect | Type | What it does | Combat role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Devour | Buff | Restores health and grants grenade energy when activated; kills while it is active restore health, grant grenade energy, and extend the effect. | Sustain and grenade-energy loop |
| Invisibility | Buff | Hides your Guardian from sight and radar. Offensive actions can end it, depending on the action and mode. | Evasion and repositioning |
| Void Overshield | Buff | Adds a protective layer that reduces damage from combatants; it does not make you invulnerable. | Staying alive under fire |
| Suppression | Debuff | Interrupts active enemy abilities and prevents ability or movement-mode use while it lasts. Suppressed combatant AI cannot fire. | Interrupting and controlling threats |
| Weaken | Debuff | Makes an enemy take increased damage and slows or disorients it; combatants also fire less accurately. | Target control and team damage |
| Volatile | Debuff | Marks an enemy with unstable Void energy. Additional damage can trigger a detonation; the target also detonates if it dies before taking enough extra damage. | Explosive damage and grouped-enemy pressure |
Bungie groups these effects as three buffs and three debuffs in its Guardian and subclass guide. The descriptions here focus on what each does in combat rather than fixed damage or duration values, which can change with updates and activity rules.

What the three Void buffs do
Devour: survive and feed grenade energy
Devour is the Void sustain loop: activation restores health and grants grenade energy, while kills during the effect restore health, grant grenade energy, and extend Devour. It is valuable when you can keep defeating enemies, but it is not a guarantee of a full heal on every activation or kill; Bungie has adjusted its healing over time. See Bungie’s Update 9.0.0.1 notes for an example of that later tuning.
Invisibility: move without drawing attention
Invisibility hides your Guardian from enemies’ sight and radar, making it useful for escaping a dangerous position, crossing exposed ground, or setting up a safer approach. It is not a license to attack freely: offensive actions can end the effect, and the exact interaction depends on the action and game mode. Bungie’s original Void 3.0 overview describes the core function; treat visibility interactions as mode-sensitive rather than assuming every opponent or activity responds identically.

Void Overshield: add a layer of protection
A Void Overshield adds protection on top of your normal health and reduces damage from combatants. It can help you hold space or remain in a fight longer, but it is not immunity, and Bungie has adjusted related behavior and visuals in later updates. Its benefit is defensive; do not confuse it with Devour’s health-and-energy loop or assume every source grants identical strength in every mode.
What the three Void debuffs do
Suppression: interrupt dangerous actions
Suppression is the control keyword. It interrupts active abilities and prevents affected enemies from using abilities or movement modes for as long as the effect persists. Bungie also says suppressed combatant AI cannot fire. That makes suppression especially useful for disrupting an enemy’s action, rather than simply increasing damage against it.
Rank #2
Weaken: make a target easier to damage
Weaken causes an affected target to take increased damage and impairs it by slowing or disorienting it. Bungie describes combatants as firing less accurately while weakened. In a group, applying Weaken can support damage from teammates as well as your own attacks. The size of the damage increase is not stated here as a universal number: activity rules and sandbox tuning matter, so check current tooltips and patch notes before planning around a percentage.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Volatile: turn follow-up damage into an explosion
Volatile marks an enemy with unstable Void energy. Deal additional damage to trigger the detonation; if the target dies before taking enough extra damage, it detonates on death instead. The explosion can pressure nearby enemies, which is why Volatile can support add-clear loops. It is distinct from Weaken: Weaken amplifies damage against a target, while Volatile creates an explosive payoff.

Void Breaches: pickups that connect effects to abilities
A Void Breach is an elemental pickup, not one of the six buffs or debuffs. Bungie introduced Breaches through selected Void Fragments: picking one up grants class-ability energy. That makes a Breach a bridge between defeating or affecting enemies and getting an ability back.
Bungie’s Update 7.0.0.1 notes documented Fragment examples in which Breaches could be created after defeating suppressed targets, defeating weakened targets with precision damage, or defeating volatile targets. Another Fragment interaction granted Devour when picking one up. Those examples reflect the rules described in that update, not a promise that every trigger remains unchanged. Read the live Fragment text in game before building around a specific trigger.

How to choose a Void build direction
Start with the result you want, then check how reliably your chosen Aspect, Fragment, ability, weapon perk, or pickup can produce it. Bungie’s build guide frames Void as adaptable across survivability, healing, and invisibility; the right loop depends on your class setup and the tools you equip.
| If you want… | Build around… | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Sustain and grenade energy | Devour | What activates Devour and whether your kill opportunities let you extend it |
| Safer movement or a reset | Invisibility | What actions break invisibility in the activity you play |
| More protection while fighting | Void Overshield | How your chosen source grants the shield and how it behaves in your mode |
| Enemy interruption | Suppression | Which targets and abilities your chosen source can suppress |
| More team damage on a priority target | Weaken | How consistently you can apply it and whether the target can be affected |
| Explosions and add-clear | Volatile | How you apply Volatile and trigger its detonation against grouped enemies |
| More class-ability energy | Void Breaches | The Fragment’s current creation condition and pickup interaction |
Void 3.0 moved subclass customization into Aspects and Fragments and gave every class access to Void grenade types, while class-specific abilities and gear still shape how a build works. Bungie’s Void 3.0 materials use Warlock Devour builds and Hunter invisibility or debuff play as examples, not exclusive class rules. Choose based on the effect loop and your available tools, not the assumption that a keyword belongs to only one class. See Bungie’s Void 3.0 overview and Update 4.0.0.1 notes.

What has changed, and how current are the details?
The core roles of the six keywords are useful ways to understand Void, but exact numbers, visuals, and triggers are patch-sensitive. Bungie’s Update 9.5.0 notes include later changes involving Void grenades, Fragment stat penalties, Invisibility visuals in Crucible, Overshield visuals, and Sentinel Shield. For exact durations, damage amounts, trigger conditions, or mode-specific behavior, use the current in-game tooltip and the relevant update notes rather than treating an older guide as definitive.
Bungie’s Gameplay Team also described Soul Siphon as a new Voidwalker Aspect in a June 4, 2026 abilities and armor preview. In that preview, a powered melee hit readies the Aspect; activating the melee then siphons energy from enemies in front of the player, dealing damage and gathering Overshield and class-ability energy. Bungie said it pairs with Feed the Void for higher Devour uptime. Because this is preview material, confirm that Soul Siphon is live and check its final in-game description before relying on those details.
