The important limitation is matchmaking: competitive activities use separate console and PC pools, while non-competitive activities match players across platforms. Crossplay is also different from Cross Save, which controls where one character set can be used. Xbox players have an additional voice-chat requirement: an Xbox Certified headset is needed for in-game voice communication.
Does Destiny 2 have crossplay?

Check your in-game identity
- Open Destiny 2 and open the Roster.
- Find your Bungie Name and the platform indicator shown for each player.
- Give friends your exact Bungie Name so they can search for you.
- Accept pending requests from the Invites tab, then invite the player to your fireteam.
Bungie Names are the cross-platform identity used for friend requests and invitations. Bungie documents a maximum of 200 Bungie Friends (Bungie, 2026). Fireteam, friend, and clan invite privacy controls can be adjusted in the relevant Destiny 2 settings if requests are being blocked.
Xbox and Microsoft Store PC invitations
Bungie states that in-game invitations work across platforms for Xbox consoles and the Microsoft Store PC version when the target player is online and Cross Play is enabled. If an invitation does not appear, confirm the recipient is online, check both players’ privacy settings, and search the exact Bungie Name rather than relying only on a platform friends list.

Blocking a Bungie Name also blocks the associated platform accounts. The blocked player cannot send friend requests or session invitations, communicate through voice, or use other supported communication channels with you. If cross-platform invites seem impossible with one particular person, check whether either account has been blocked.
How does Destiny 2 matchmaking work across console and PC?
The deciding factor is the activity type, not simply whether a player owns a console or a computer. Competitive matchmaking separates console and PC players. Non-competitive activities use cross-platform matchmaking, so a mixed-platform fireteam can generally stay together without changing pools.

This design means a console player does not automatically face PC opponents in competitive activities. Joining a fireteam with a PC player is the event that moves the group into the PC pool. In Strikes and social spaces, platform boundaries are not used in the same way because those activities are classified as non-competitive.

Can PS5 play with Xbox or PC in Destiny 2?
Yes. A PlayStation player can form a fireteam with Xbox and PC players through Bungie Names, provided Cross Play is enabled and the players are using supported versions of Destiny 2. The same applies in the other direction: Xbox and PC players can invite PlayStation players through the Roster.
Platform compatibility does not merge platform accounts or purchases. It only allows the players to share activities. Each person still signs in through their own linked platform and Bungie account, and each account retains its own character and license rules.
Why a platform friends list may not be enough
Cross-platform invitations are handled through Bungie’s identity and Roster systems. Add the person as a Bungie Friend by searching the exact Bungie Name, then manage the request from Invites. A console-level friendship entry may not by itself create a Destiny 2 fireteam relationship.
What happens if I turn crossplay off?
PlayStation players can opt out from Destiny 2’s settings. Xbox players opt out through console privacy controls, including the You can join cross-network play permission and related communication permissions. After opting out, matchmaking is restricted to same-platform players who have also disabled Cross Play.
Turning the feature off while you are already in a fireteam or activity that uses Cross Play can trigger error code CHICKPEA. Leave the activity, restore Cross Play for the affected platform, and then rebuild the fireteam before trying again. On Xbox, review the cross-network and communication permissions; on PlayStation, return to Destiny 2’s Cross Play setting and re-enable it.

When opting out makes sense
- You want competitive matchmaking limited to your own platform type.
- You are troubleshooting a platform-privacy conflict and need to test a same-platform session.
- Your group is willing to accept a smaller matchmaking pool.
Opting out is not a way to create a private cross-platform pool. Players who disable Cross Play can match only with same-platform players who made the same choice, so queue times and availability can vary.
Is Destiny 2 crossplay the same as cross-save?
No. Cross Play lets you play with people on other platforms. Cross Save chooses one active Destiny 2 character set for use on linked platforms. Cross Save does not merge characters from multiple accounts.

Cross Save’s waiting period
Deactivating Cross Save starts an unskippable 90-day wait before it can be re-enabled (Bungie, 2026). Treat the active character selection as a deliberate account decision rather than a setting to switch repeatedly between platforms.
DLC and Season Pass limitations
DLC licenses do not transfer between platform accounts. You must own the relevant DLC on each platform where you intend to use it. Season Passes are bound to the first Destiny 2 account used after purchase and cannot be transferred to another character set. Crossplay lets the group play together, but it does not make one platform’s purchase entitlement appear on another platform.

Why can’t I hear my cross-platform fireteam?
Voice chat has separate hardware, operating-system, and privacy requirements. Cross Play being enabled does not guarantee that every microphone or headset is accepted by the console or PC.

Xbox headset requirement
Bungie states that Xbox players need an Xbox Certified headset to successfully connect and participate in Destiny 2 voice chat. Before replacing equipment, verify that the headset is certified for the exact Xbox console or PC connection you are using and that it is selected as the active input and output device.
Check Destiny 2’s audio controls
Bungie’s Audio Guide includes headset-only and speakers-only output choices, push-to-talk controls, and team-channel options. Confirm that voice chat is enabled, the desired team channel is selected, and push-to-talk is not preventing an open microphone from transmitting. Also check the fireteam’s communication privacy settings.
PC microphone and playback checks
- In Windows Privacy settings, grant Destiny 2 permission to use the microphone.
- Set the intended headset or speakers as the default playback device and the intended microphone as the default recording device.
- Restart the Windows Audio service if the game still shows no input or output.
- Check the network’s NAT status, since restrictive NAT can interfere with player communication.
- Temporarily disable a VPN when appropriate and test the connection again.
Blocked players cannot communicate through voice chat. If the problem affects only one person, check Bungie blocking and privacy settings before changing Windows or console hardware.
What is the fastest way to set up a cross-platform fireteam?
Use this sequence when a group is meeting for the first time or troubleshooting an invite failure:
- Choose one Bungie Name for every player and copy each name exactly.
- Open the Roster and send Bungie Friend requests.
- Have each player accept the request in the Invites tab.
- Confirm everyone is online and Cross Play is enabled.
- Check Fireteam, friend, and clan invite privacy settings for every account.
- Start with a non-competitive activity such as a Strike to verify that the fireteam and voice chat work.
- If entering Crucible or Gambit with a PC player, expect the group to use the PC competitive pool.
