Destiny 2 STINGRAY Error on PC: Xbox App Sign-In Fixes and Outage Checks

Bungie ties STINGRAY to platform-account sign-in or service maintenance. Try refreshing your Xbox app sign-in on PC, then check Xbox status before assuming a widespread outage.

If Destiny 2 shows STINGRAY while you’re launching it through the Xbox app on PC, first refresh your Xbox app sign-in: update the app, sign out, restart your PC, then sign back in. Bungie says STINGRAY can mean you are not signed in with your platform account or that platform services are undergoing maintenance. There is no verified evidence here of a widespread outage on October 8, 2026, so check Xbox status before assuming the problem affects many players.

What the STINGRAY error means

Bungie’s STINGRAY guidance says the error appears when a player is not signed in with their platform account or when platform services are undergoing maintenance. For a PC player using the Xbox app, those are the relevant possibilities to check first: account/app sign-in state and Xbox service availability.

Bungie also mentions an expired PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live subscription, but that note applies to console players. It does not establish that a PC player using the Xbox app needs to buy Game Pass or another subscription to fix STINGRAY.

Try these Xbox app sign-in steps on PC

  1. Confirm the account. Make sure the Xbox app is signed in to the Microsoft/Xbox account associated with your Destiny 2 platform account.
  2. Refresh the Xbox app sign-in. Update the Xbox application, sign out of the account, restart the PC, and sign back in. Bungie Help recommended these steps in a reply to a PC Xbox app report dated June 19, 2025; they are troubleshooting suggestions, not a guaranteed fix. See the Bungie Help forum thread.
  3. Try launching Destiny 2 again. If STINGRAY remains, check whether Xbox services are reporting an outage or maintenance.

Check Xbox service status before treating it as a widespread outage

Bungie directs players seeing STINGRAY to check the relevant platform’s service status. Use the Xbox Live status page for current Xbox incidents. A dated individual report or a historical patch note cannot confirm whether an incident is active today. Current readable incident details were not available from the status page when checked for this article, so no live outage can be confirmed here.

What the past reports and patch note establish

A Bungie Help forum user described being unable to get past Destiny 2’s sign-in screen when playing through the Xbox app on PC in a report dated June 19, 2025. Bungie Help responded with the app update and sign-out/restart/sign-in advice. That exchange demonstrates a reported PC case, not how many players are affected now.

A non-Bungie Destiny.Bungie.Org patch-note archive dated June 16, 2026 records a fix in Destiny 2 Update 9.7.0.1 for “persistent Stingray error codes when attempting to log in.” This is useful historical context, but it does not establish that every current STINGRAY error has the same cause or that a new incident is resolved.

If STINGRAY still appears

If Xbox status shows no outage or maintenance and the error continues after refreshing your sign-in, Bungie recommends posting in its Help forums. Include that you are playing on PC through the Xbox app, when the problem started, whether other Xbox games or services work, and which sign-in steps you have tried. Those details help distinguish an app/account sign-in issue from a platform-service problem.
