Prismatic was designed to make familiar Destiny 2 buildcrafting feel less bounded, not to make the game malfunction. In The Final Shape, it lets Guardians combine selected Light and Darkness powers and adds a new combat state, creating room for ability pairings and play styles that the old subclass boundaries did not allow.
What “break the game” means for Prismatic
The phrase is best understood as a power-fantasy claim: Prismatic was meant to expand the combinations players could make and the ways those combinations could play. Bungie’s Gameplay Team put the goal plainly: “Our main goal for Prismatic is to enable new and interesting buildcrafting combinations that lead to new types of gameplay, so that we can keep the game feeling fresh.” Bungie’s April 10, 2024 Prismatic deep dive frames the subclass as a new buildcrafting space, not as a claim that the software would literally break.
How Prismatic opens up new builds
Selected powers from both sides of the Light and Darkness
Rather than offering every ability in the game, Prismatic gives each class a curated selection of Light and Darkness supers, melee and grenade abilities, Aspects, movement modes, and class abilities. The key change is that players can wield powers from both sides within one subclass, making combinations possible that were previously separated by subclass choice.
Transcendence adds another combat state
Prismatic also introduces Transcendence. Players build Light and Darkness meters through aligned damage and effects; filling both enables this state. It gives the subclass a new layer of combat flow alongside the ability combinations themselves, rather than simply repackaging an existing subclass menu.
#1 Best Overall
- For the first time ever, Prismatic empowers you to combine Arc, Solar, Void, Stasis, and Strand into a custom subclass of your design. Light and Darkness have no quarrel within you, Guardian.
- The Final Shape looms—a nightmarish calcification of reality into the Witness's twisted design. Embark on a perilous journey into the heart of the Traveler, rally the Vanguard, and end the War of Light and Darkness.
A launch-era fragment count
Bungie said players would be able to find or earn 21 Fragments from day one of The Final Shape. That is the expansion’s stated launch-day figure, not a current balance statistic or evidence that every possible combination is equally effective.
Why excitement and balance concerns can coexist
Some players reacted to the reveal in the language of joyful rule-breaking. One Reddit commenter wrote, “Devs be all, ‘lets break this fuckin game in the best way possible!’” That is one person’s informal reaction, not Bungie’s wording or a measure of community opinion. The reveal-period discussion also shows why novelty can prompt questions about power creep: more ways to combine abilities may change expectations for what a build can do.

- The Annual Pass edition includes The Final Shape story campaign, new destination, three new Supers, new weapons and armor to collect.
- The Final Shape Dungeon Key, catalyst and ornament for the new and instantly unlocked Tessellation Exotic Fusion Rifle, one Secret Stash delivered during each Episode, an Exotic Sparrow, and three Episodes in the year of The Final Shape.
Concerns were not uniform across classes, either. A June 2024 post specifically questioned whether Prismatic Titan was “Endgame Viable,” illustrating that broad excitement about the system does not settle how each class performs in demanding content. That thread is an example of a class-specific concern, not proof that Titan was objectively unusable or representative of all players.
Bungie continued adjusting the design after launch
In an October 3, 2024 update, Bungie described expanding selected exotic class-item interactions to work with Titan’s Thruster. Bungie said the earlier limitations did not align with Prismatic’s goal “to break past the limits.” The change is evidence that the design continued to evolve after launch; it does not, by itself, show whether Prismatic was too strong or too weak. Bungie’s October 3, 2024 update documents that specific adjustment.
What would establish whether Prismatic is “broken” now?
There is no single balance verdict that applies across every class and activity. A meaningful evaluation would need to distinguish build flexibility and ability synergies from survivability, ability uptime, damage, and add-clear—and then compare those outcomes in ordinary PvE, high-difficulty PvE, and PvP. It would also need to account for changes made over time.
The dated design and tuning statements here explain what Bungie intended and offer one example of a later change, but they do not establish Prismatic’s balance in the October 2026 sandbox. They are not enough to rank current builds, classes, or modes. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Bungie built Prismatic to stretch buildcrafting possibilities, and players’ reactions included both excitement about that freedom and concerns about its consequences.
