SecurAble is a small, standalone diagnostic utility that checks three processor characteristics: 64-bit instruction extensions, hardware support for Data Execution Prevention (DEP), and hardware virtualization. Run its executable, read the three result panels, and click each panel for a contextual explanation. The results tell you what the processor and the current firmware or operating-system environment expose; they do not constitute a complete security audit, enable protections, install a hypervisor, or prove that a 64-bit operating system and compatible drivers are already installed.
What does SecurAble check?
Gibson Research Corporation designed SecurAble as a capability check rather than a hardening tool. Its official description says the utility probes the processor for the presence, absence, and operational status of three modern features. Each panel answers a different question, and a positive processor result can still require firmware, operating-system, driver, or application support before it has a practical effect.

| Panel | What a positive result indicates | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| 64-bit instruction extensions | The processor has the instruction extensions required to run a 64-bit Windows version. | It does not prove that the installed Windows edition is 64-bit, that suitable drivers exist, or that every application will run. |
| Hardware DEP (NX/XD/EVP) | The processor can help mark data areas such as heaps, stacks, and communication buffers as non-executable when the platform enables the feature. | Firmware and the operating system must expose and enable the capability; CPU support alone is insufficient. |
| Hardware virtualization | The processor provides hardware assistance for virtual machines, reducing the emulation overhead that software-only virtualization would otherwise incur. | It does not prove that a hypervisor is installed or that any virtual machine is securely configured. |
How do I run SecurAble?
The utility is distributed as a standalone executable for Windows or for Linux systems running it through Wine. It does not require setup or installation. The intended design is that deleting the executable leaves no registry or file-system changes behind.
- Obtain the executable from an authentic source. The official distribution is the Gibson Research Corporation page. Because the utility is an old executable, verify that the download source and file have not been altered before running it.
- Launch the program. No installer wizard or permanent service is expected. On Windows, run the file normally first.
- Read all three labeled areas. Record the displayed status for 64-bit instructions, hardware DEP, and hardware virtualization rather than treating one panel as a complete security verdict.
- Click each result area. SecurAble opens a contextual explanation that identifies what the particular status means on that machine.
- Repeat with appropriate administrative rights if a result is uncertain. Gibson Research Corporation notes that its kernel-mode component can improve accuracy. A non-administrative run may not be able to determine the complete state.
- Investigate firmware or operating-system settings when needed. A capability can be present in the processor but hidden or disabled by firmware or the operating system.
What does the 64-bit result mean?
A 64 result means the processor has the instruction extensions needed for a 64-bit Windows version. It is a hardware prerequisite, not a report about the operating system currently installed.

What a 64 result confirms
- The CPU implements the relevant 64-bit instruction extensions.
- A 64-bit Windows installation is technically possible from the processor-capability perspective.
What it does not confirm
- Whether Windows is currently running as 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the computer maker provides 64-bit drivers for every device.
- Whether older applications, games, or utilities will work on a 64-bit installation.
- Whether a system upgrade is practical, since memory, firmware, storage, licensing, and driver compatibility are separate questions.
For a gaming PC, this distinction matters when evaluating an operating-system change or troubleshooting software that requires a 64-bit environment. SecurAble answers only the processor part of that decision.
How does hardware DEP protect a system?
Hardware DEP uses a processor capability to help classify memory as data rather than executable code. If an attacker places instructions inside a data buffer during a buffer-overrun exploit, the operating system can refuse to execute that buffer when the relevant controls are active.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why the names NX, XD, and EVP appear
AMD commonly calls the capability NX, for No eXecute. Intel calls its equivalent XD, for eXecute Disable. SecurAble groups these vendor names under hardware DEP because the security function is the same broad concept: preventing execution from selected data areas.
Why a CPU flag is not enough
Effective hardware DEP depends on several layers working together:
Also popular on Amazon
- Processor: The CPU must implement NX, XD, or the equivalent capability.
- Firmware: BIOS or UEFI must expose the feature rather than suppress it.
- Operating system: The OS must recognize and enable hardware DEP.
- Software behavior: Applications and their memory protections still influence the attack surface.
Consequently, a positive hardware capability does not prove that every process is protected or that the computer has been fully hardened. DEP also is not a substitute for operating-system updates, secure configuration, application updates, or endpoint security controls.
What does hardware virtualization mean?
A positive virtualization result means that the processor contains native assistance for virtual machines. Hardware support can reduce the overhead associated with emulating CPU behavior, making virtual-machine use more practical than software-only emulation.
That result is useful when you need an isolated environment for testing software, examining an untrusted file, or running another operating system. It still says nothing about whether a hypervisor is installed, whether firmware has virtualization enabled, how much memory and storage a virtual machine receives, or whether the guest and host are securely configured. SecurAble reports capability; it does not build or evaluate the virtual environment.
What does an OFF? hardware DEP result mean?
OFF? is an uncertainty warning, not a clean statement that the processor lacks DEP support. SecurAble may suspect that the hardware capability exists but cannot verify it because the BIOS or operating system suppresses it, or because the program cannot access enough information.

Why verification can fail
- The firmware may have disabled or hidden the feature.
- The operating system may not be exposing the capability to the utility.
- A non-administrative launch may lack the access needed for a complete check.
- SecurAble’s 32-bit kernel-mode code has documented limitations under 64-bit Windows and under Linux/Wine.
What to do next
- Close SecurAble and run it again with administrative privilege where that is appropriate for your system.
- Review the BIOS or UEFI security and processor settings for an execute-disable, NX, XD, or similarly named option.
- Check the operating system’s DEP configuration and confirm that hardware DEP is not being suppressed.
- Run the utility again after any firmware or OS change and compare the result.
- If the status remains OFF?, treat the capability as unverified rather than unsupported.
Do not turn an uncertain panel into a definitive diagnosis. The utility’s age and its documented kernel-mode limits mean that a modern environment can remain difficult for SecurAble to classify.
Is SecurAble still reliable on current Windows?
Its current compatibility is not established by the published material. SecurAble version 1.0.2570.1 was initially released on January 18, 2007, and the file is listed as last updated on February 22, 2013. Gibson Research Corporation does not provide a Windows 10 or Windows 11 compatibility matrix on the cited page, and the available information does not establish a current code-signing status or a recent independent security review.

That does not automatically make the utility useless. It means you should interpret a result in context, especially on 64-bit Windows, where the program’s 32-bit kernel-mode component may not be able to inspect every state. A result that conflicts with firmware or operating-system information deserves further verification rather than blind acceptance.
What are SecurAble’s security and privacy boundaries?
SecurAble is deliberately narrow. It checks processor capabilities and aspects of their currently exposed state; it does not change DEP settings, harden Windows, scan applications, inspect passwords, or replace endpoint protection. Hardware virtualization results likewise do not certify a secure virtual-machine setup.

The standalone model limits installation footprint, but it does not eliminate the normal risk of running an untrusted executable. Use an authentic download, scan the file with your normal security controls, and avoid assuming that a small program is automatically safe because it has no installer.

Use SecurAble to answer a narrow prerequisite question, then check the rest of the platform separately.
Recommended Free Tools
- Moving to a 64-bit game or operating system: A 64 result clears the processor instruction prerequisite only. Confirm the OS edition, drivers, memory, and application compatibility independently.
- Investigating an exploit-mitigation warning: A hardware DEP result indicates capability or uncertainty, not that every process is receiving DEP protection. Verify firmware and OS configuration.
- Planning a virtual test environment: Hardware virtualization can make virtual machines more practical, but you still need a configured hypervisor and a security plan for the host and guest.
- Comparing two machines: Record all three panels and the circumstances of the run, including whether it was administrative. Do not rank a system solely by one positive result.
What should I do if SecurAble cannot determine a feature?
First distinguish an explicit negative result from an uncertain result such as OFF?. Then repeat the check with the highest appropriate privileges, inspect BIOS or UEFI settings, and verify the operating-system configuration. If the old utility continues to disagree with current platform information, document the conflict and treat SecurAble as an historical capability indicator rather than a definitive modern compatibility test.
What is the practical verdict on SecurAble?
SecurAble remains a convenient, lightweight way to view three processor capabilities in one place: 64-bit instructions, hardware DEP, and virtualization. Its strongest value is explaining the difference between a feature that exists in silicon and a feature that firmware and the operating system actually expose. Its age, limited modern compatibility documentation, and inability to configure or audit security mean that every result should be treated as one input to a broader system check.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can SecurAble enable DEP or virtualization for me?
No. It only reports capability and exposed state. Any change must be made through the appropriate firmware or operating-system controls, followed by an independent verification that the setting is active.
Does a positive virtualization result guarantee better game performance?
No. The result indicates processor assistance for virtual machines, not a frame-rate or latency improvement in ordinary games. Virtual-machine performance also depends on the hypervisor, guest configuration, memory, storage, and workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I run SecurAble without installing anything?
Yes. It is distributed as a standalone Windows executable or a Linux/Wine executable and is described as requiring no setup or installation. Keep in mind that running without administrative access can reduce how completely it determines some states.
Why might two runs of SecurAble show different information?
The utility can see more when launched with suitable administrative privileges, and firmware or operating-system settings can change what is exposed. Its documented 32-bit kernel-mode limitations on 64-bit Windows and Linux/Wine can also leave a result uncertain.
