“The program can’t start because deviceuxres.dll is missing from your computer”
deviceuxres.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component, not normally a file supplied by a game or third-party runtime. Common variants include “deviceuxres.dll was not found,” “could not be loaded,” “is missing or corrupted,” and “the specified module could not be found.”
Which fix applies to you
- The error appears when Windows starts or affects several Windows features: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- The file was recently quarantined: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- Only one application reports the error: repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.
- The message says “not designed to run on Windows” or “bad image”: suspect a mismatched or damaged file. Do not replace it with a downloaded copy.
- The problem began after an update, cleanup, restore, or malware removal: use the matching recovery step below.
- The error began after installing a device driver: update or roll back that driver, but do not assume the driver owns
deviceuxres.dll.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair its components
Windows servicing is the safest way to restore this file because it obtains a copy that matches your edition, build, architecture, and component store.

Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the application or Windows feature again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when SFC completes.
- Open the application that produced the error.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. See Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guidance.

Success usually means the error no longer appears. If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run the two commands again. If DISM itself fails, use Windows Update again or continue to the repair-source and recovery steps below.

If repeatedly hunting through Windows versions and interpreting SFC/DISM output is the part slowing you down, Outbyte PC Repair can show its scan findings, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows Update plus DISM/SFC remain the correct built-in repair path.
Verify or repair only the suspected file
If you know the file should be in the native Windows system directory, you can verify that specific path from an elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /verifyfile=%WINDIR%System32DeviceUxRes.dll
To ask SFC to repair that path instead:
sfc /scanfile=%WINDIR%System32DeviceUxRes.dll
Use the path that matches the affected process and architecture. Microsoft documents these options in its SFC command reference.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows file if it detects corruption, tampering, or a false positive.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
DeviceUxRes.dll. - Check the detected file’s full path and reason.
- Restore or allow it only if the file is confirmed to be a genuine Microsoft file in a normal Windows directory and your security software identifies the detection as a false positive.
- Run a security scan before restoring it if malware is plausible.
Protection History is retained for a limited period, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible. Microsoft explains the available actions in its Protection History guidance.
If a copy appears beside an unfamiliar program rather than in a Windows directory, do not restore it automatically. Scan the computer and repair Windows from official sources.
Fix 3: Repair the application that triggers the error
The filename alone does not identify the executable that requested it. A third-party program can show the message even when the damaged component belongs to Windows.
First repair Windows with the steps above. Then repair the affected application:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error or the program you launched.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available. Resetting can remove the program’s settings or local data.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or its original Microsoft Store listing.
For a game, use its launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking command before reinstalling the entire game. Do not copy deviceuxres.dll into the game folder. A nearby duplicate can override Windows’ normal DLL search and create a second problem.
What the file is and where it belongs
The embedded description is generally reported as Windows Device User Experience Resource File, with Microsoft Corporation as the publisher and Microsoft Windows as the product. “Resource file” describes Windows content used by the operating system’s device-related user experience. Microsoft does not publish a definitive technical description of this DLL’s internal functions or a standalone installer for it.
The file is maintained as part of Windows itself. It is not normally a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or game-runtime file.

The names are counterintuitive, but Microsoft documents this behavior in the File System Redirector reference. Do not copy a file into both directories. Do not mix a file from Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, or Windows 11.
Historical inventories show Windows-specific releases across those older Windows generations, but they are not interchangeable download choices. A file that exists can still be wrong for the installed build or architecture.
DeviceUxRes.dll.mui is a separate language-resource file. It is not a replacement for DeviceUxRes.dll.
Fix 4: Check Windows Features only when the error points there
Windows Features are not the normal repair route for this file, but a disabled device-related feature can help explain why a particular Windows interface fails.

- Press Enter.
- Review the feature named in the original error or related troubleshooting instructions.
- Enable it only if you know it is required.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not randomly enable features to replace the DLL. If the feature dialog itself fails, return to DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Update or roll back a related driver
Driver work is appropriate only when the problem began immediately after a device-driver installation or a device-management failure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failure.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider and date.
- Select Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
- If the problem began after a recent update, select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not remove a working driver merely because deviceuxres.dll is mentioned. A driver reinstall is not a primary fix for a missing Windows component.
If identifying which of many installed drivers is stale is the main difficulty, Outbyte Driver Updater can show scan results, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the hardware manufacturer’s official driver remains the preferred source.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is for registering DLLs that expose COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 DeviceUxRes.dll
There is no reliable public evidence that DeviceUxRes.dll is a self-registering COM server. A message saying that DllRegisterServer was not found is therefore expected for many ordinary Windows DLLs. Registration will not reconstruct a missing component. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in the regsvr32 reference.
Do not download or manually replace the DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong Windows release.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A modified or malicious file.
- An incompatible dependency.
- A duplicate that overrides the protected Windows copy.
The safest sources are Windows Update, Microsoft installation or recovery media, a matching Windows repair source, and the Microsoft Update Catalog. Searching the Catalog for the DLL name alone is not enough to identify the correct package; the package must match your installed edition, build, and update history. Microsoft explains the Catalog in its Windows Update Catalog guidance.

Fix 6: Use System Restore or repair Windows
Use System Restore when the issue began after a known update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or system change and a restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. Microsoft describes its behavior in the System Restore guide.
For Windows 11, Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now may be available. This reinstalls the current Windows version while repairing system components. If that option is unavailable or fails, back up important files and use Microsoft recovery or installation media. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
FAQ
Is deviceuxres.dll legitimate?
Yes. DeviceUxRes.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component when it is in a normal Windows system or component-store location and carries a valid Microsoft signature.
Does it belong to Windows 10 and Windows 11?
It belongs to Windows, and historical inventories also show it in earlier Windows releases. The correct copy depends on the installed build and architecture.
What does “specified module could not be found” mean?
It may mean the named DLL is missing, but it can also mean a dependency required by that DLL is missing. Repair Windows first rather than assuming the displayed filename tells the whole story.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the default fix. DeviceUxRes.dll is a Windows component, and it is not a verified Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET dependency.
Should I reinstall the application?
Only if one application triggers the error after Windows repair. Repair or reinstall that application from its official source, but do not assume the application owns the Windows DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should I provide if the error persists?
Record the full error text, Windows edition and build, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, the triggering application, whether the file exists in %WINDIR%System32, and any recent update, antivirus, cleanup, restore, malware-removal, or repair activity.
