devinv.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL described as Device Inventory Library. It normally belongs to Windows rather than to a game, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX, .NET, or a standalone application.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which process shows the error: Windows Setup,
CompatTelRunner.exe, an upgrade assistant, or another executable. - When it appears: during startup, Windows Update, an upgrade, or while launching one program.
- The exact message: missing, not found, specified module could not be found, or not designed to run on Windows.
- The file path: the normal native Windows location is
%SystemRoot%System32devinv.dll. - Your Windows architecture: on 64-bit Windows,
System32contains native 64-bit system files, whileSysWOW64contains 32-bit system components.
Do not decide that the file is malware solely because it has an unusual name or because an application reports it. Check its path, digital signature, and the process that requested it.

devinv.dll is associated with Windows compatibility and device-inventory activity. Microsoft documentation and a Microsoft Q&A example show it being invoked with a command similar to:

The exact file version depends on the Windows release, architecture, servicing state, language, and installed updates. Do not treat a version found on another computer as a universal replacement.
Check the path and signature
- Press
Windows+Eto open File Explorer. - Enter
%SystemRoot%System32in the address bar. - Find
devinv.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
A genuine Windows copy should be in the Windows directory and have a valid Microsoft signature. A file with the same name in a game folder, temporary directory, Downloads, or an unrelated application directory is not automatically malicious, but it deserves closer inspection. Identify the executable loading it before restoring or replacing anything.
What the error message means
Windows may display messages such as:
The program can't start because devinv.dll is missing from your computer.
or:
The code execution cannot proceed because devinv.dll was not found.
These usually mean Windows could not load the requested component. The file may actually be absent, damaged, quarantined, or incompatible with the process that requested it.

This message is also important:
The specified module could not be found.
It does not always mean that devinv.dll itself is missing. Windows may have found the DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.
The following message generally indicates corruption, an incompatible build, or tampering:
devinv.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
If the error appears during Windows Setup or compatibility assessment, repair Windows first. If it appears only when an unrelated program starts, inspect that program’s executable path and installation before assuming Windows is the only cause.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending or incomplete update can leave protected Windows components in an inconsistent state.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the system does not immediately require it.
- Check Windows Update again after restarting.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Then repeat the action that produced the devinv.dll error. If the problem began immediately after an update, continue with System Restore or Windows Recovery options rather than downloading the file separately.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC uses that repaired store to replace damaged protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish. Keep the Command Prompt window open if progress pauses.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the failing operation. If it reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. Persistent failures may require System Restore, storage diagnostics, or a repair reinstall.
Manually hunting for replacement files while repeating DISM and SFC can make troubleshooting difficult because you may not know what changed. Defender or another security product may have quarantined a damaged or suspicious file. Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Windows Security on Windows 10.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to
devinv.dll. - Check the recorded file path and detection details.
Only consider restoring a quarantined file if it is the expected Windows copy under %SystemRoot%System32, its Microsoft signature is valid, and you understand why Defender removed it. Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined item can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is deliberately allowed.
If the file was outside the Windows directory, unsigned, or downloaded from an untrusted source, do not restore it. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline if you suspect tampering or malware.
Fix 4: Identify the process that requests the DLL
The correct repair depends on the process shown in the error.

CompatTelRunner.exe, Windows Setup, or an upgrade assistant: repair Windows with updates, DISM, and SFC. Do not reinstall a game or runtime.- A third-party executable: confirm that the program is not incorrectly bundling or requesting a Windows DLL from its own directory. Update or reinstall that program only from its official installer if its installation is damaged.
- A game launcher: use the launcher’s file-verification feature only when the launcher itself identifies a damaged game file.
devinv.dllis not thereby proven to be a game file. - A startup entry: use Task Manager > Startup apps to identify the associated program, then update or uninstall that program if appropriate.
If the error appears only in one Windows account, test the same action from another administrator account. A damaged user profile or per-user application path may be involved, although that is not a known defining characteristic of this DLL.
Fix 5: Check devices and drivers only when evidence points there
devinv.dll is not a device driver. Installing a driver will not normally restore this Windows library. Use Device Manager only if the error coincides with a device problem, failed upgrade, or a device showing an error symbol.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the affected hardware.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the status on the General tab.
- Use Driver > Update Driver, or obtain the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Avoid mixing 32-bit and 64-bit files. On 64-bit Windows, do not copy an older 32-bit DLL into System32, and do not use a file from another Windows build.
When several devices need attention, manually identifying compatible drivers can mean checking hardware IDs and comparing versions. Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help when the error started after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or system change. It rolls back system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs without normally removing personal files.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Click Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
If Windows cannot start normally, open Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
Fix 7: Repair-reinstall Windows
If Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and System Restore do not resolve the error, repair the current installation.

Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings.
If that option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media and choose the in-place upgrade path that preserves personal files, settings, and applications. Back up important files first, and select the same Windows edition and language where applicable.

Do not download devinv.dll from a random DLL site
An arbitrary copy may contain malware, the wrong architecture, an older build, or a damaged signature. It may also conceal the actual problem, such as a broken component store or a missing dependency.
Microsoft does not provide a standalone devinv.dll redistributable download. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or an official Windows repair installation instead.

Copying the file from another computer is not a normal fix. It is appropriate only in advanced recovery when the source has the identical Windows edition, build, architecture, servicing state, and a verified Microsoft signature.

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are usually irrelevant
devinv.dll is a Windows component, not a documented Visual C++ runtime, DirectX package, or .NET library. Reinstalling those packages is not an evidence-based repair unless the specific failing application separately reports a missing runtime.
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. devinv.dll is an inventory library, not an ordinary COM component.
Do not run:
regsvr32 devinv.dll
A registration error will not restore a missing or corrupted protected Windows file.
FAQ
Is devinv.dll legitimate?
Yes. The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows system component. Verify its Microsoft signature and expected Windows path rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is devinv.dll a driver?
No. It is a Windows inventory library. A device driver problem can coexist with the error, but installing a driver is not the normal way to restore this DLL.
Why does a game report devinv.dll?
The game or launcher may be invoking a Windows process, using an incorrect search path, or exposing a broader Windows problem. Identify the executable that requested the file before reinstalling the game.
Should I copy it into SysWOW64?
No. Windows servicing supplies the correct architecture and location. Manual copying can create a worse mismatch.
What if Windows says the specified module cannot be found?
The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies cannot load. Check the process, repair Windows, and investigate the application or event logs if the error remains.
What is the safest first repair?
Install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by SFC in an elevated Command Prompt. If that fails, check quarantine, use System Restore, and consider a repair reinstall.
