Diablo IV has Standard Difficulties for early progression and Torment difficulties for endgame. Blizzard’s Season of Reckoning overview expands Torment from four tiers to twelve and raises the level cap to 70. Higher Torment tiers bring greater danger in exchange for better gold and experience bonuses and improved drop rates, but Blizzard’s overview does not publish the unlock thresholds for Torment V–XII.
What are Diablo IV’s difficulty options?
The game separates its difficulties into two groups: Standard Difficulties and Torment. The Standard options are Normal, Hard, Expert, and Penitent. They provide a progression path toward the endgame; Torment is the higher-risk ladder used for endgame progression.

Blizzard’s earlier guide described Normal as a slower-paced option, Hard and Expert as more challenging and faster-paced, and Penitent as a dangerous step toward Torment. That guide reflects the earlier published progression system, so its descriptions and unlock details should be read as version-specific rather than as a verified current walkthrough. How do you unlock the Standard Difficulties?
In the earlier progression published by Blizzard, Normal and Hard were available by default, Expert opened after the prologue, and Penitent opened after completing the final base-game campaign quest or choosing to skip the base-game campaign. This is the old published route; the sources available here do not independently confirm that every step remains unchanged in the current game.

How does the Torment ladder work now?
Blizzard’s Season of Reckoning overview says Torment expands from four tiers to twelve. It also announces a level-cap increase to 70. Under this current announced framework, Torment I–XII make up the endgame difficulty ladder, with each increase bringing greater danger and challenge alongside larger gold and experience bonuses and improved drop rates for coveted gear and materials. Blizzard does not provide numeric reward bonuses in the overview.
For the current expansion and reward direction, see Blizzard’s Season of Reckoning overview.

What are the Torment unlock thresholds?
The published Pit thresholds below belong to the earlier four-tier Torment system. They explain the historical unlock route for Torment I–IV; they do not establish the current route for all twelve tiers.
| Historical Torment tier | Previously published Pit unlock |
|---|---|
| Torment I | Pit 20 |
| Torment II | Pit 35 |
| Torment III | Pit 50 |
| Torment IV | Pit 65 |
In that older guide, reaching level 60 opened Pit tiers 1–20. These Pit values are version-specific historical thresholds from Blizzard’s Season of Hatred Rising guide; do not extrapolate them into a guessed sequence for Torment V–XII. The later overview confirms the twelve-tier expansion but does not state the current unlock process or thresholds for tiers V–XII.

Which Torment tier should you choose?
Use the highest tier you can handle reliably rather than treating the biggest number as automatically best. Blizzard establishes the trade-off direction, not a recommended tier or numeric break-even point: higher Torment means more danger and challenge, with better gold and experience bonuses and improved drop rates.
- If you are struggling to survive or clear content, step down until progression is manageable.
- If you can clear comfortably and want better reward prospects, try a higher tier.
- Compare your actual pace and survivability; the official overview does not publish the bonus percentages needed for a precise efficiency calculation.
Are Season 11 difficulty changes live?
No. Blizzard’s Season 11 systems material is a preview, and it lists October 21, 2026 as the planned start of the 2.5.0 Public Test Realm for PC Battle.net. As of October 8, 2026, that date is in the future, so previewed changes—including the proposed removal of Torment armor and resistance penalties—should not be treated as live rules. See Blizzard’s Season 11 systems preview for the preview context.

What changed from the old guide?
The key version distinction is that the earlier Blizzard guide documented a four-tier Torment ladder with Pit unlocks through Torment IV, while the Season of Reckoning overview expands the ladder to twelve tiers and raises the level cap to 70. The newer overview does not fill in the corresponding current Pit thresholds. If you need the exact unlock requirement for a higher tier, check current in-game progression or later official patch information rather than assuming the old intervals continue.
