No character list appears
When the game stops before selection, classify it as a login or pre-roster symptom rather than a character-loading problem. Include that distinction in any report; a March 2026 black-screen report used this exact kind of timing, but did not establish an official resolution.
How do I troubleshoot a character that will not load on Windows PC?
For a PC character that fails after selection, use reversible checks in order. The guidance below comes from a December 2023 Blizzard support response, so it is a troubleshooting sequence rather than a guarantee for a current incident.

If the game is completely frozen, use the normal operating-system close option and restart rather than repeatedly clicking the same menu control.
- Power-cycle the computer and network. Shut down the PC, unplug or switch off the modem/router, wait briefly, power the network equipment back on, then restart the PC. This clears temporary device and session state; it does not fix a Blizzard outage.
- Repair the installation in Battle.net. Open Battle.net, select Diablo IV, open the game’s options menu, and choose the client’s Scan and Repair function. Let the scan finish before launching the game again. The exact menu wording can change with Battle.net updates.
- Reset local game options cautiously. Blizzard support suggests resetting local options as a possible check. Before deleting or renaming the local Diablo IV folder, copy out screenshots because that folder may contain them. After each step, test once and record the result. If the symptom changes from an endless load to an error message, preserve the new wording; it is more useful than simply reporting that the game “doesn’t work.”
Should I change DNS, use a VPN, or buy an Ethernet cable?
These are isolation tests, not established cures. Blizzard’s support response mentions routing and DNS as possible contributors and says a VPN may help test whether traffic is taking a problematic route, while also noting that VPN use is not supported by Blizzard and may be restricted by local rules.

DNS
Changing DNS can show whether name resolution is involved, but it will not repair a frozen creation menu or a server-side character problem. Record your original DNS settings so you can restore them, and change one variable at a time.
VPN
A temporary VPN test can indicate a routing difference if the character loads only through the alternate path. Do not treat that result as a permanent recommendation: the support guidance does not endorse VPN use, and your ISP, employer, school, or local law may restrict it.
Wired networking
A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is an optional way for a Wi-Fi user to isolate local wireless instability. Blizzard’s connection guidance does not specifically recommend purchasing a cable, and a wired connection will not fix a Blizzard authentication outage, a damaged game file, or a UI freeze.
What should PlayStation and Xbox players do?
Use the console-specific troubleshooting route linked from Blizzard’s technical-support hub. Windows paths, Battle.net repair, selective startup, and local PC folder resets do not apply to PlayStation or Xbox.

- Check Breaking News and BlizzardCS before reinstalling or changing console network settings.
- Fully close the game, restart the console, and restart the network equipment if the issue appears connection-related.

Blizzard patch notes document a historical all-platform issue in which the game could freeze after a player double-clicked Create Character in the selection menu. That entry proves the UI failure existed and received a patch fix; it does not prove that the same bug is active now or explain a loading failure after a character has already been selected.

For that reason, click Create Character once, wait for the interface to respond, and record what happens. If the menu freezes, include the exact action and timing in your report instead of repeatedly reproducing the double-click.
When should I stop troubleshooting and contact support?
Escalate when the current service notices do not explain the issue, the same failure survives a clean restart and the platform-appropriate checks, or a single character remains unable to load while others work.
