Diablo Immortal is worth trying if you want a free action RPG built around a substantial campaign, loot hunting and repeatable activities—but its appeal depends on what you want from the endgame. Casual story play and cooperative adventures can be enjoyed without treating every upgrade as a purchase decision. Players chasing PvP strength, leaderboards or the fastest progression are more likely to feel the game’s monetization. The game is live on mobile and PC, but its controls and interface do not feel equally native on both platforms.
What kind of game is Diablo Immortal?
Diablo Immortal is a free-to-play action RPG with a campaign, monster combat, equipment upgrades and a shared world. Its core loop is familiar to the series: fight through groups of enemies, collect loot, strengthen a character and take on tougher content. Beyond story missions, the game offers timed randomized Rifts and activities for solo players, groups and competitive play.

Is Diablo Immortal still worth playing?
For a player who mainly wants campaign content, combat and loot progression, the available reviews suggest there is a satisfying action RPG underneath the live-service systems. The main reservation is not that every player must spend money; it is that progression gates and monetization become more consequential for some endgame ambitions, particularly competitive ones.

The evidence has important dates. GameSpot’s launch review, published June 21, 2022, praised the campaign’s scope, loot progression, mobile controls and post-story content while criticizing progression gates, endgame microtransactions and the PC beta experience as it stood then. Its conclusion called the game “a surprisingly premium-feeling adventure in the series that hits all the right notes, even if its endgame starts to depend on microtransactions too heavily.” That is a launch-era review, not a judgment of the current PC client.
PC Gamer’s June 26, 2025 retrospective reached a more qualified conclusion about spending: “Unless you’re an avid PvPer or a PvE leaderboard obsessive, the game is as free as it can get.” That is the writer’s assessment, not Blizzard’s policy and not a guarantee that every player will experience progression the same way. The same retrospective says the underlying action RPG remains enjoyable when monetization systems are set aside.

How does monetization affect play?
Blizzard says the core game will remain free and that players should be able to enjoy it for hours without spending. Its free-to-play statement describes optional purchases and free and paid Battle Pass tracks. It also says the Market is player-to-player, restricts which items can be listed, does not offer gear and has no cash-out.

The critical reviews point to a distinction that matters when deciding whether to play: progressing through the game for enjoyment is not the same goal as optimizing endgame power, PvP performance or leaderboard placement. The latter pursuits make the monetization systems more salient in the cited coverage. The available sources do not establish that every player needs to spend.

How do mobile and PC compare?
Diablo Immortal is available on mobile and PC. Blizzard announced PC cross-play and cross-progression, while acknowledging that the game was originally designed for mobile. That context matters: the fact that a PC client exists does not mean its interface and controls were designed around PC first.
GameSpot praised the mobile controls in its 2022 review but criticized the PC beta as it existed at launch. That beta criticism should not be treated as a verdict on the current client. For a platform choice, consider the kind of input and interface you prefer: the available evidence supports a positive launch-era assessment of mobile controls, but it does not provide a current, direct comparison of the two clients.
Blizzard’s PC announcement explains the platform launch and cross-play plans. The current Google Play listing describes the game as available on mobile and PC; listing details can change.
What has changed recently?
Diablo Immortal remains a live service, so its world and activities continue to change. Blizzard’s September 2026 “Made to Suffer” announcement describes the continuation of the Nation of Agony story in Lut Gholein’s High Ward, alongside new activities and Legendary Gems, Battlegrounds changes, seasonal activities, and quality-of-life and balance updates.
The update announcement lists regional maintenance dates of September 16, 2026, for Oceania, East Asia, Southeast Asia and Europe servers, and September 17 for the Americas. It also announced the City of Pain Tokens event for September 17–30, 2026; those dates have passed, so it should not be considered an active event. The Google Play listing accessed October 8, 2026, displayed September 16, 2026, as its update date.
Quick Recap
Who is most likely to enjoy it?
- Try it if you want a free-to-play Diablo action RPG with a campaign, loot collection and repeatable group or solo activities.
- Go in with realistic expectations if you mainly want PvP, rapid endgame advancement or a competitive leaderboard position; reviewers identify those goals as places where monetization matters more.
- Choose your platform based on feel, not just availability. The game is on mobile and PC, but Blizzard says it was originally designed for mobile, and the cited review evidence does not establish a current platform-by-platform control verdict.
