Blizzard did run historical Overwatch League promotions in which Twitch viewers spent Bits to cheer for a team and could earn digital rewards. But the available official documentation does not confirm a new or current proposal matching the headline. The documented mechanics were tied to specific past promotions, not established as a present-day offer.
What the historical Overwatch League cheering system involved
Blizzard’s historical Twitch rewards guide instructed viewers to choose an Overwatch League team and cheer using Twitch Bits. For the particular promotion covered by that guide, a cheer started at 50 Bits. The guide also listed Twitch emotes and Overwatch League-themed in-game skins as promotion rewards, with different thresholds for different rewards. Those were the terms of that promotion, not a current price or standing reward schedule. (Blizzard’s historical Twitch rewards guide)
What MegaCheer added in the 2019 guide
A separate Blizzard guide for the 2019 season described a MegaCheer as a single cheer of at least 300 Bits. It said the person cheering received two random emotes, while the number of other viewers who could receive gifted emotes scaled with the size of the cheer. This, too, describes a historical promotion rather than confirming that MegaCheer or its rewards are available now. (Blizzard’s 2019 Overwatch League rewards guide)
Does the evidence confirm a new Blizzard proposal?
No. The official materials available here document earlier Bits campaigns and Blizzard’s historic Twitch partnership; they do not substantiate a newly announced proposal for Overwatch League viewers to pay to cheer for teams. The January 2018 partnership announcement said Twitch and the league were developing fan rewards, including Cheering with Overwatch League Cheermotes. It quoted Blizzard’s then-COO Armin Zerza: “Our fans love to engage with content on Twitch, and we wanted to drive significant viewership of the Overwatch League in its inaugural season and beyond.” That supports the historical context, not a present-day announcement. Cheering with Bits was different from buying team merchandise
Bits cheering was a digital interaction with promotion-specific digital rewards. Separately, Activision Blizzard announced Fanatics as the Overwatch League’s official retail partner in 2018 and discussed team jerseys and gear. That announcement establishes historical merchandise context only; it does not establish current stock, Amazon listings, or a present-day way to cheer for a team. Blizzard also ran a Bits-based team-cheering promotion for the Hearthstone Global Games. Its statement that each Bit was split equally between the team and Blizzard applied to that Hearthstone event and must not be treated as an Overwatch League revenue arrangement.
