What Schofield says happened to the release schedule
The Callisto Protocol is a third-person survival-horror game set in a prison on Jupiter’s moon Callisto, where inmate Jacob Lee is caught in an outbreak, according to KRAFTON’s game description. It launched on December 2, 2022, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, per GameSpot.

In an interview account published by PCGamesN on August 7, 2024, Schofield said he had expected to have “about three and a half more months” and that Krafton’s team told him the game had to ship in December 2022. The account presents his view of the schedule dispute; the reviewed coverage does not provide an independently documented internal decision record showing how the date was set.

Why he says December mattered
In a later interview reported by GameSpot on August 21, 2025, Schofield gave the rationale he says he was told: “They told me that the game has to ship in December because of the Korean stock market.” This describes his recollection of management’s reasoning, not a verified statement from Krafton or proof of the company’s decision process.

The distinction matters: the game did release in December, but the available reporting does not establish that an outside party formally forced the date, or independently confirm that stock-market timing was the reason. No Krafton response to this specific allegation appears in the sources reviewed.
What Schofield says the schedule affected
PCGamesN’s 2024 account says Schofield linked the accelerated schedule to production strain and cuts. He said four bosses and two enemy types were removed. These are figures from his account, not counts corroborated by released production records. The same coverage reported his account that “49 people quit” in 2021; it does not establish that those departures were caused by the release date.

Schofield’s later comments are not the only public account of development. In a November 11, 2022 interview published by KRAFTON, shortly before launch, he described the project as “an all new IP with an all new team, on a new engine, on all new consoles” made during the pandemic. That earlier, positive description is useful context about the production conditions he publicly discussed at the time, but it neither confirms nor disproves his later account of the scheduling dispute.

Schofield also discussed the game’s sound work in an August 23, 2022 PlayStation Blog interview, saying it contained “more than 200,000 individual sounds” and that Jacob’s spacesuit had “more than 60 unique sounds.” Those are his production figures, not independently audited measurements; they illustrate the scope of work he described, rather than proving why content was cut.

What he says he would do differently
Asked what he would change, Schofield told PCGamesN in 2024: “I would have put my foot down.” He described the response he wished he had made as: “If you want the game to ship, you come and take over the studio.” His regret is about not resisting the schedule decision more forcefully; it should not be mistaken for independent confirmation of who had authority or what alternatives management considered.
