How to Free Up Disk Space for Steam Games Without Losing Saves

Move installed games with Steam Storage or uninstall selectively—but check game-specific Cloud coverage and back up uncertain local saves first.

To free space without risking progress, move installed games to another Steam library with Settings > Storage, or uninstall only after checking that game’s save files. Steam Cloud is optional and game-specific; it does not guarantee that every save is protected. For any save whose cloud coverage or location is uncertain, make a separate copy before removing files.

Choose the space-saving action that fits your situation

Steam game installations and game saves are different things. Moving or uninstalling an installation affects the game files; a save may be synced through Steam Cloud or stored locally in a location chosen by the developer. Treat save protection as a separate check whenever you delete or manually move files. The safest choice depends on whether you have another drive with room, whether you still want the game installed, and whether you have verified where that title keeps progress.

Option What happens to installed game files When it helps Save-file precaution
Move a game to another Steam library Steam relocates the installation rather than uninstalling it. A suitable drive has available space. Moving the installation is not a substitute for checking Cloud coverage or backing up uncertain local saves.
Uninstall a selected game The installed game files are removed. You no longer need the game installed and want to reclaim its installation space. Check the game’s Cloud setting and save location first; copy local saves separately if needed.
Add an internal drive and library Creates another place for game installations; games can then be moved there. Existing drives do not have enough free capacity. Save handling remains game-specific, even when installations are on another drive.
Back up a game through Steam Creates a backup of eligible game files. You need a copy of supported installation files. Do not assume it includes saves, settings, or custom content; preserve saves separately.

If the game should remain ready to play and a different drive already has room, moving it is the option that both retains its installation and frees its space on the original drive. If you are finished with a game, uninstalling it can remove its installation, but you should first establish what will happen to its saves. If no drive has room, moving alone cannot create capacity; you will need to uninstall something, make room elsewhere, or consider another drive.

Move installed games with Steam Storage

If another drive already has room, moving a game is usually the most direct way to reclaim space on the crowded drive while keeping the game installed. Steam’s default Windows installation location is C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon, but users can create a library location on another drive. The destination library must exist before you move games into it.

  1. Open Steam’s storage controls. In the Steam client, go to Settings > Storage. Review the drives and library folders shown. The layout may vary with the client version.
  2. Add a library on the destination drive if necessary. Use the add-location control in Storage to create a Steam library on a suitable drive. Choose a drive with enough available room for the game you plan to move.
  3. Select the source drive. In Storage, choose the drive that currently contains the game installations you want to relocate.
  4. Select games and move them. Select the game installations, then choose Move and the destination library. Steam describes this as moving the installation folder without uninstalling the game.
  5. Confirm the game is available from its new library. Check the game in your Library after Steam completes the move. Keep the original files alone during the move rather than trying to drag folders manually.

A move only frees space on the source drive if the game was installed there and the destination is a different drive with enough capacity. It changes where the installation resides; it does not create extra space across drives or reduce the game’s total installed size.

Check the source and destination before starting

Storage shows the libraries and drives Steam knows about. Confirm that the selected source is the crowded drive and that the destination is the other library you intended to use. A library path must be created before it can serve as the destination. If the destination does not appear, return to the add-location control and create the library first rather than trying to move files into an arbitrary folder yourself.

Steam’s instructions use the Storage tab and its add-library and Move workflow, but the exact labels or layout can change between client versions. Use the current view to verify both locations before confirming. Avoid manually dragging an installed game’s folders between drives: Steam’s built-in move action is intended to relocate the installation while keeping it installed, while a manual move can leave uncertainty about which files Steam recognizes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moving is useful when you want to keep a large game installed but your primary drive is full. It is not a save migration plan: a local save may be stored outside the installation folder, and Cloud coverage varies by game. You generally do not need to move a save simply because you move the installation, but you should still verify save protection before any separate deletion or folder cleanup.

Check Steam Cloud before deleting or changing files

Steam Cloud coverage is determined title by title. Developers choose which user files are synchronized, so the presence of Cloud support does not establish that every save, profile, configuration file, or piece of custom content is included.

  • Check the game’s Steam store page for an indication that Steam Cloud is supported.
  • In your Library, open that game’s Properties and check its Cloud Synchronization option.
  • Check the global Cloud setting in Steam client Settings as well. A game’s support and the client’s overall setting are separate considerations.
  • If Cloud is disabled for a game, progress that would otherwise be synced through Cloud remains local to that machine.

For a synchronization conflict, do not choose a version automatically. Compare the file dates Steam displays and consider which copy reflects your most recent progress before selecting one. Steam says it has limited ability to recover lost Cloud data, so Cloud should not be treated as a guaranteed recovery service.

Why a Cloud badge is not a complete backup plan

Cloud support tells you that a game can synchronize files selected by its developer; it does not tell you that every file related to your play is included. A game might use Cloud for some user files while keeping other data locally. The relevant question is not only “Does this game support Steam Cloud?” but also “Is the save I need among the files this game synchronizes, and is synchronization enabled here?” Steam’s store-page indicator and the per-game Cloud option are useful checks, but they do not remove the need to save a separate copy when coverage is unclear.

There are two settings to check because global client settings and an individual game’s configuration are distinct. Do not infer the state of one from the other. If Cloud is unavailable or turned off, do not assume that progress has been uploaded elsewhere; Steam says progress that would otherwise be saved through Cloud remains on that machine. Likewise, if Steam presents a conflict, selecting the wrong copy can replace the progress you meant to keep. Read the displayed dates and choose the version that matches your most recent play before proceeding.

Find and copy local saves when Cloud coverage is uncertain

When a game has no Cloud support, Cloud is disabled, or you cannot establish which files are included, locate the save files and copy them to a safe, separate location before uninstalling or manually changing folders. A second location on the same drive is not a dependable backup if that drive is later erased or fails.

Use the Windows path only as a starting point

Steam says many third-party game saves that are not stored through Steam Cloud may be in C:Users[username]DocumentsMy Games on Windows. This is not a universal save directory. Developers choose where their games write saves, and different games may use different folders.

If the save is not there, consult the game’s official support information or publisher for that title’s save location. Before deleting anything, identify which files belong to the game and copy them to a separate folder or another storage device. Preserve the folder structure and filenames; after reinstalling, a local save may need to be restored to the game’s expected location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the copy before the destructive step

Use this order when you are unsure: identify the game’s save location, copy the files you want to preserve, and only then uninstall the game or change folders. If you uninstall first and discover that the save was local, you may already have removed files you wanted to keep. A copy is particularly important when the title lacks Cloud support, its Cloud setting is off, or you cannot confirm that the relevant save is part of its Cloud synchronization.

Keep the copy somewhere separate from the game installation you plan to remove. For example, copying files into a folder that will be deleted along with the game does not protect them from that deletion. If you are not certain which folder contains the save, do not delete likely candidates to see what happens; check the game’s official support information or ask its publisher for the location. When restoring, a save may need to go back into the corresponding folder the game expects, so retain its existing folder structure and filenames rather than renaming files without guidance.

Do not mistake Steam’s Cloud cache for every save file

Steam says Cloud data is stored locally under userdata by default, with different paths on Windows, macOS, and Linux. That folder is not a universal location for all game saves: it relates to Steam Cloud data, while game files outside Cloud may be stored wherever the developer chose. Avoid deleting Cloud-related folders as a cleanup shortcut.

In particular, finding a game-related item under Steam’s Cloud data does not prove that all of its save-related files are there. Nor does not finding a save in the default Cloud location prove that the game has no local saves. The developer’s chosen save location and the title’s Cloud configuration matter. Treat userdata as Steam Cloud-related data, not a general-purpose target for freeing disk space.

Understand what Steam Backup does—and does not—protect

Steam’s Backup feature is for eligible game files. It works only for games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. It should not be treated as a guaranteed backup of progress.

Steam explicitly warns that backups of Valve-created games do not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps, or configuration files. For third-party games, save locations vary; the support guidance says those files may need to be copied back to their corresponding folders after a restore. If keeping progress matters, verify and copy the save files separately rather than relying on a game backup alone.

Think of the two copies as serving different purposes. A Steam game backup can preserve eligible installation files so they can be restored, while a separate save copy protects the progress files you have identified. One does not automatically replace the other. Before relying on a Steam Backup, confirm that the game qualifies—its download, installation, and patching must be handled completely through Steam—and separately check whether custom content, settings, or saves need their own copies. For Valve-created games, Steam expressly excludes saved games, custom multiplayer maps, and configuration files from these backups.

For a third-party title, do not assume the backup has captured save files just because the game itself is in the backup. The save path can vary by developer, and Steam’s support guidance notes that those files may need to be copied back to their corresponding folders after restoration. If the purpose of backing up is to avoid losing progress, identify and copy the save independently before you remove or replace the installation.

Uninstall selectively, not Steam itself

If you decide a game can be removed, check its Cloud status and identify its save location before uninstalling. Copy local saves separately when Cloud coverage is absent or unclear. Then uninstall that individual game through Steam rather than deleting folders at random; manually removing files can make it harder to tell what is an installation file and what is a save.

Uninstalling Steam itself is not a routine way to clear game space. Steam warns that its uninstall process removes installed game content. If you are reinstalling Steam and want to retain game installations, Steam instructs users to move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory before uninstalling. That protects the installation files from the uninstall process; it does not replace a separate save backup.

Use a short pre-uninstall checklist

  • Confirm the title. Make sure you are removing the game you no longer need, not the Steam client or a library location containing other installations.
  • Check Cloud for that game. Look at the store-page Cloud indicator, the game’s Properties, and the client’s global Cloud setting. Treat uncertain coverage as a reason to make a separate save copy.
  • Find local saves. DocumentsMy Games is one possible Windows location for third-party non-Cloud saves, not a guaranteed path. Check official game support if needed.
  • Copy what matters. Put the save copy in a location that will not be removed with the game. Keep the files and folder structure intact.
  • Uninstall the game, not Steam. Use Steam’s game management rather than manually deleting folders or uninstalling the client as a space-clearing shortcut.

If you are reinstalling Steam rather than removing one game, use the separate installation-retention precaution: move steamapps outside the Steam directory before uninstalling Steam. This is about retaining installed game content. It should not be mistaken for a save backup, since save files may be elsewhere and Cloud coverage is game-specific.

When to add another drive

You do not need to buy a drive to use Steam’s move workflow: any suitable drive with room can host another library. If all current drives are full, an additional internal SSD or other internal drive is one option for another library location. Steam allows an alternate library path on another drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam cautions against installing Steam to an external hard drive because of possible performance problems. External drives can also disconnect, which may cause recognition or performance issues. If an external-drive setup is not reliably recognized or performs poorly, Steam’s support guidance recommends an internal drive for the described problem.

Adding a drive is an optional capacity choice, not a prerequisite for moving a game. If an existing internal drive has enough room, create a library there and use the Storage move process. If every available drive is full, an additional internal drive can provide a destination for installations, but it does not change where a game stores its saves or make Cloud coverage more complete. Save checks remain necessary regardless of the number or type of libraries.

Be cautious about using an external hard drive as the answer to every storage problem. Steam warns that external-drive use can lead to performance problems, and a disconnected drive can cause recognition issues. If Steam does not consistently recognize an external drive or its performance is poor, its support guidance recommends an internal drive for that described problem. The practical choice is therefore between moving to existing suitable capacity, uninstalling a title you no longer need, or adding an internal drive when more capacity is genuinely required—not assuming that an external drive is always interchangeable with an internal library.

If free space keeps shrinking

Removing or moving a game may not explain every change in available space. Steam identifies automatic game patches, saved-game file creation, and custom-content downloads as possible reasons disk usage can increase after a game is run.

  • In Settings > Storage, review the drive and library entries to see which installations remain on the crowded drive.
  • Check whether a game has downloaded a patch or custom content since you last reviewed its size.
  • For a game that creates local saves, remember that save files can grow independently of the installed game files. Do not delete them merely to reclaim space unless you have confirmed they are backed up and no longer needed.
  • If an external drive disappears from Steam or behaves inconsistently, check its connection and availability before moving or deleting any game folders.

Steam’s Storage labels and layout can change between client versions, so use the current Storage view to verify the selected source and destination before starting a move.

Separate installation growth from save growth

A game can use more space after you play for different reasons. Steam identifies automatic patches and custom-content downloads as possible sources of increased disk use, while the game may also create saved-game files. These are not all the same kind of data. Moving the installation can relocate the game files, but it does not mean that every save or custom file has moved with them. If space changes again, review the Storage view and consider whether an installation, a patch, custom content, or local saves are involved before deleting anything.

Do not treat saves as disposable cleanup files just because they are smaller or are not listed as an installed game. They can represent progress independent of the installation, and Steam Cloud does not guarantee that every title or file is covered. If a save is what is taking up space, first verify that you no longer need it or make a separate copy. If the apparent increase follows a patch or custom-content download, verify the installed game and its location in Storage before assuming the save is the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will moving a Steam game to another library delete my saves?

Steam’s Storage move workflow relocates the game installation without uninstalling it. Saves are separate and may be stored locally or synchronized through a game-specific Steam Cloud setup. Moving an installation is not a save backup, so check the game’s Cloud settings and copy uncertain local saves before changing or deleting files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Steam Cloud automatically save every game’s progress?

No. Cloud support and the files synchronized are determined game by game, and developers choose which user files are uploaded. Check the game’s store page, its Library Properties Cloud Synchronization option, and Steam’s global Cloud setting. Make a separate copy when coverage is unclear.

Where are Steam game saves stored on Windows?

There is no universal save location. Steam says many third-party saves that are not stored through Steam Cloud may be under C:Users[username]DocumentsMy Games, but developers choose save locations. Consult the game’s official support information or publisher if you cannot find the files.

Does Steam Backup include saved games?

Do not rely on it as a save backup. Steam Backup covers eligible game files for games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. Steam says backups of Valve-created games exclude saved games, custom multiplayer maps, and configuration files; third-party save paths vary and may need to be restored separately.

Can I uninstall Steam to remove games but keep them installed?

Steam warns that uninstalling the client removes installed game content. If you are reinstalling Steam and want to retain game installations, Steam instructs you to move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory before uninstalling. Save files still need separate consideration because they may be stored elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I put a Steam library on an external drive?

Steam allows alternate library locations on another drive, but cautions against installing Steam to an external hard drive because of possible performance problems. External drives can also disconnect and cause recognition or performance issues. Steam’s support guidance recommends an internal drive if an external-drive setup causes the described problem.

Do I need to buy another drive to move Steam games?

No. Any suitable existing drive with enough room can host another Steam library. An additional internal drive is an optional way to add capacity when current drives are full; Steam’s move workflow itself does not require a purchase.

The Bottom Line

Use Settings > Storage to move a game to another existing library when you want to keep it installed, and uninstall individual games only after checking their saves. Steam Cloud is game-specific, Steam Backup is not a guaranteed save backup, and local save locations vary. When coverage or location is uncertain, copy the save files to a separate safe location before deleting or moving anything.
