The report says he had just fought two human players when a high-tier AI opponent attacked him while he was looting. It attributes his reaction to the bot death: “AI is harder than real players. I can’t stand this game.” That account describes one streamer’s session, not proof that Marathon is generally harder than other shooters.
What happened when Ninja played Marathon?
According to Dexerto’s March 6, 2026 report, Ninja switched to Marathon after playing ARC Raiders on launch day. The outlet says he fought two human players, started looting, and was then attacked by a high-tier bot. After dying, he complained that the AI was harder than real players, closed the game, and ended the stream.
Dexerto attributed the line “AI is harder than real players. I can’t stand this game” to Ninja. The original stream transcript or VOD was not independently available for confirmation here, so the quote and sequence should be understood as the outlet’s reporting. Read Dexerto’s account.
The “little over an hour” description refers to this one reported stream session. It is not a measurement of how long players generally last, and the report does not establish that Ninja quit because the game’s AI was objectively more difficult than its human opponents.

What kind of game is Marathon?
Marathon is Bungie’s science-fiction PvP extraction shooter, set on Tau Ceti IV. Players take the role of cybernetic mercenaries called Runners. Its encounters include both other players and AI combatants, so a bot fight is part of a broader extraction-shooter experience rather than the game’s only mode of opposition. Bungie lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as platforms, and announced that the game went live on March 5, 2026.
Did Bungie intend for the AI to be challenging?
Yes, challenging AI was part of Bungie’s stated development goals. In a June 17, 2025 update about delaying the previously announced September 23 release, Bungie listed “More challenging and engaging AI encounters” among the areas it wanted to improve. That statement establishes a development focus; it does not show that Bungie intended bots to be harder than human players in every encounter, or that the design goal caused Ninja’s reaction months later.

Bungie’s April 18, 2025 closed-alpha update also identified PvE encounters against AI combatants as an area where the team wanted feedback. The studio described that alpha as an incomplete technical test aimed in part at testing technical capabilities and the moment-to-moment gameplay loop. Alpha conditions do not establish how launch-day encounters were balanced.

It shows that, in the session Dexerto described, a high-tier bot killed a well-known streamer after he had engaged human opponents, and he reacted negatively enough to stop playing on stream. It does not show how frequently that happens, whether the bot was unusually strong, or whether most players would find the same encounter too difficult. Ninja’s reported comparison with ARC Raiders is a personal reaction, not a controlled comparison of the two games.
