Bungie’s free Marathon Server Slam ran February 26–March 2, 2026, and is no longer playable. It was an open preview and server stress test—not the full game. Here’s what the event offered, how its rewards worked, and what Bungie said about Marathon’s later plans as of September 24, 2026.
When did the Marathon Server Slam run, and is it still available?
The Server Slam ran worldwide from February 26, 2026, at 10 a.m. PT until March 2 at 10 a.m. PT. Bungie presented it as a free open preview where players could try Marathon and help stress-test its servers. The event has ended, so it cannot be joined now. Bungie’s event announcement has the original schedule.
At the time, Bungie listed Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play and cross-save enabled. Full launch gameplay required an internet connection; console players also needed a separately sold online multiplayer subscription.
What could players do in the preview?
The Server Slam offered a limited selection of Marathon’s content and progression. Players could:
#1 Best Overall
- CLASSIC GRAPHICS AND SOUNDS: Immerse yourself in nostalgia with classic graphics, music, and sounds that look just like the original Tetris arcade game!
- AUTHENTIC GAMEPLAY: Use the joystick and buttons to move and rotate the Tetriminos as they fall to complete lines and score points!
- FULL COLOR SCREEN: With a brighter, full color screen that makes it easy to see the blocks, you’ll be racking up points like a pro as you stack your Tetriminos!
- MARATHON MODE: Race to line up your Tetriminos in rows before they stack too high. Complete 10 lines to move to the next level. But watch out - the Tetriminos drop faster the longer you play!
- SHARE AND COLLECT: Arcade Classics are a must-have retro toy for collectors or for anyone looking to share this classic toy with the next generation!
- Explore two zones: Perimeter and Dire Marsh.
- Take early contracts for five factions: CyberAcme, NuCaloric, Traxus, MIDA, and Arachne.
- Try five of the six Runner shells listed for launch.
- Use Rook’s scavenger experience.
The March 2 recap put the scope plainly: “The Server Slam was only a slice of Marathon’s gameplay and progression,” the Marathon Dev Team wrote in its wrap-up.
How did the Server Slam compare with the launch scope?
Bungie said additional zones, faction progression, the sixth Runner shell, Thief, and Ranked would come with launch and Season 1 content. The preview’s limited selection was therefore not a complete representation of the game’s launch scope.

| Area | Server Slam | Launch and Season 1 scope described by Bungie |
|---|---|---|
| Zones | Perimeter and Dire Marsh | Additional zones were to be added |
| Runner shells | Five of six launch shells | The sixth shell, Thief, was to be added |
| Factions | Early contracts for five factions | Faction progression was to be added |
| Ranked | Not included in the preview | Ranked was to be added |
Bungie’s announcement described the planned additions; the table does not imply that each feature arrived on a particular date. See the event briefing for its preview-versus-launch framing.
What rewards were tied to participation?
Arrival Cache tiers depended on mission completion and Runner Level milestones. Completing the first mission unlocked the Standard cache; reaching Runner Level 10 unlocked the Enhanced cache; and reaching Level 30 unlocked the Deluxe cache. Completing the introductory mission also unlocked the Complex Study emblem and Beta.exe player background. Bungie said these rewards would be delivered after launch.
In its March 2 recap, Bungie said rewards would arrive in the in-game mailbox and warned that players had to log into Marathon before the end of Season 1 to receive them. That deadline has passed. The announcement does not establish that these rewards can still be claimed; players with a missing-reward issue should check current Bungie account support rather than assume the old event claim window remains open.
What does “off to an incredible start” mean?
It is a qualitative description, not a verified player-count claim. Bungie’s wrap-up included community-stat graphics, but the figures are not available as readable text in the cited recap. No player count or concurrent-user peak is stated here.

What did Bungie say about Marathon after launch?
In a September 24, 2026 roadmap update, Bungie described Marathon as having launched as a “cutthroat, winner-takes-all PvEvP experience.” The update outlined plans to broaden how players could enter and experience the game. Bungie’s roadmap described a Nightfall Refresh for October, a December Symbiosis update planned to introduce the game’s first permanent PvE mode and other additions, and a larger evolution planned for March.
Those were plans announced on September 24, not confirmation that the updates had shipped. The Server Slam remains best understood as a short, limited preview before launch; the roadmap reflects Bungie’s later intentions for the live game.
