Reporting says police searched a reseller’s home and seized Nintendo development hardware and game cartridges after a lot linked to a Sega office clearance surfaced for sale. Later coverage described contractor communications that appeared to suggest a disposal error, but the precise instructions, ownership, and legal status remain unresolved in the available reporting.
What reportedly happened
In September 2025, Time Extension reported an account from a reseller who said he bought a lot of development consoles and game cartridges from a removals worker. According to the seller, the worker said the items came from Sega’s UK office clearance as the company relocated. The seller said he paid around £10,000; that is his approximate purchase-price claim, not an independently verified valuation.
The seller also said a private investigator approached him posing as a prospective buyer, and that City of London Police searched his home on 14 July 2025, arrested him, and seized development kits and cartridges. Time Extension reported that he was released under investigation and had not received further information about forfeiture at the time of its article. These details come from the seller’s account as reported by the publication; they are not findings by a court.
What hardware and games were reportedly involved?
The initial report listed Nintendo DSi, 2DS, 3DS, Wii, and Wii U development units. It also described cartridges said to contain prototypes or other unreleased material, including Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Sonic Generations, Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games, Phantasy Star 0, Alien Infestation, and Shinobi, as well as an unreleased DS version of Rhythm Thief & The Emperor’s Treasure.

This is a reported inventory, not a complete, independently verified manifest. Heise’s 2026 background account indicates that the platforms involved may have been broader than the initial list, but the reporting does not establish a definitive count of kits, prototypes, or affected games.
What later reporting added
In February and March 2026, coverage of a GamersNexus documentary added a second strand to the story. Kotaku summarized reported contractor communications sent to GamersNexus that appeared to indicate the disposal process had gone wrong. The communications reportedly suggested that a second contractor, ITR Secure, had been assigned sensitive hardware but did not handle it.

Time Extension’s March 2026 follow-up covered the documentary and the seller’s continuing public claims. Kotaku characterized the matter as corporate negligence; that is a journalistic characterization, not a judicial finding. The reported communications may support the possibility of a disposal failure, but do not by themselves establish exactly what Sega instructed contractors to do, who owned the items, or whether any party broke the law.
Were the kits thrown away by mistake?
That remains unclear in the reporting. Heise’s 2026 account says Sega, Nintendo, Waste to Wonder, and police did not comment, citing ongoing proceedings. It also notes that the exact disposal instructions and contractors’ authority are uncertain.

Development hardware can be covered by confidentiality, return, or destruction agreements, but those terms vary by contract. The available accounts do not establish that every kit belonged to its manufacturer, that the devices were definitely intended for destruction, or that disposal automatically transferred ownership to the reseller. Without the underlying contracts and instructions, it is not possible to settle those questions from the public reporting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the case matters beyond the seizure
The reported lot is significant to game preservation because prototype cartridges can preserve versions of games that were never commercially released or otherwise made available to researchers and players. At the same time, development kits and prototype media can contain confidential material and intellectual property. That makes questions about lawful custody and preservation more complicated than simply deciding whether hardware was discarded.
