The best-documented match is the Global Alliance for the Future of Food’s 2021 compendium, The Future of Food: Seeds of Resilience: A Compendium of Perspectives on Agricultural Biodiversity from Around the World. It examines how farmer-managed seed systems and agricultural biodiversity relate to resilient, equitable food systems. The same phrase is also used for a separate women-led seed project in Karnataka, India, and metaphorically by the Global Resilience Partnership; those are distinct initiatives.
What is the Seeds of Resilience compendium?
Published by the Global Alliance for the Future of Food on 25 February 2021, The Future of Food: Seeds of Resilience is a collection of perspectives on agricultural biodiversity from around the world. Its focus is how seeds are grown, selected, saved, exchanged, and improved—and how those practices connect to food production, culture, health, local economies, and resilience. The Alliance’s resource page says small-scale farmers feed 70 per cent of the world’s population; that figure is attributed here to the Alliance, which does not identify the original study or its year on the page.
Why do farmer-managed seed systems matter?
The compendium presents agricultural biodiversity and farmer-managed seed systems as foundations for diverse and sustainable food systems. Farmers are not merely recipients of seed technology: they select and improve varieties and conserve knowledge about crops and growing conditions. It particularly emphasizes the knowledge and contributions of Indigenous and women farmers, alongside the cultural and economic roles of locally grounded seed practices.
The argument is not a quantified estimate that a specific seed system will produce a particular yield or climate outcome. Instead, the resource makes a case for supporting the people and practices that sustain seed diversity, and for ensuring farmers can save, exchange, and improve seeds and have a stronger voice in seed governance.

Just add seed starting mix, seeds, water and light to get growing! Rows are labeled alphanumerically for seedling identification with included Plant-o-Gram diagram. Tray dimensions: 11.5" x 10-3/8" x 2-1/4"
- SMARTER WATERING SYSTEM: Molded corner slots in each cell improve drainage and soil aeration to set your seeds up for germination success. Deep channels in the watering tray draw excess away from the cells, while the raised perimeter edge keeps water contained in the tray - no spills! Seed tray side handles make it easy to lift and pour off excess water or check seedlings daily.
- SIMPLER TRANSPLANTING: Soft food-grade silicone cells cradle seedlings and gently flex to pop out when it’s time to transplant into your outdoor garden! This system is specially designed to reduce stress on your seedlings, so you don't damage their roots. After transplanting, trays are easy to clean and reuse or simply store for next growing season. Top shelf dishwasher safe.
- SEED STARTER TIP: Many favorite vegetables, including peppers and tomatoes, must be started indoors before warmer weather arrives. Start pepper seeds 8-10 weeks before your area’s average last frost date, and tomato seeds 6-8 weeks before last frost. Check your Burpee seed packets for instructions on when and how to plant any of your herb, flower and vegetable seeds.
- 100% GUARANTEED: Burpee is committed to the success of all gardeners. We treat each order with care to ensure healthy seeds, plants, soil mixes and gardening supplies are packaged and sent in excellent condition. If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, we aim to make it right!
What is the 2019 Resilient Seed Systems Shared Action Framework?
The framework is a collaborative strategic guide developed by the Global Alliance for the Future of Food after its compendium and a strategic convening in Oaxaca, Mexico. Its stated purpose is to galvanize action to strengthen and protect agricultural biodiversity and promote resilient seed systems. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations lists the framework as a 2019 publication. Read the FAO framework entry.
What does research say about commons-based seed production?
A 2021 study by Lea Kliem and Stefanie Sievers-Glotzbach examined publications from breeding and seed-producing organizations in the German-speaking vegetable seed sector, comparing commons-oriented and conventional private-property approaches. The FAO-hosted summary associates commons-based structures with several capacities relevant to resilience:

- 【Value Package】The kit contain 4 pcs base trays, 4 pcs seed trays with 12 cells in each, 4 pcs humidity lids with dome, and 50 pcs peat pellets, not need soil to fill the cells, help you keep clean and tidy when planting, and creates a moist and warm environment needed for seed germination.
- 【High Quality Material】Seed start trays are made of thick plastic, sturdy and durable, holds up to multiple uses, easy to wash and dry, the seed starter pod soil is made of peat and degradable non-woven fabric, safe and eco-friendly, make plant quickly sprout and grow.
- 【Considerate Design】The transparent lid can help seeds absorb more sunlight to grow, dome works well to control humidity and air circulation for tray, the drain holes at the bottom help breathe and prevent the root oversaturating, peat pellet can well keep moist even if it is not watered for a few days.
- 【Easy to Use】You just put peat pellet in warm water to expand them, insert the seeds or cuttings, keep moist and warm and done. Then transplant them into your garden when they are grown, you can cut the netting off to prevent the roots stifled due to the plant grows too fast but the netting has not been biodegraded.
- 【Application】Starting seeds or cuttings, also can be used for plant cloning, propagating flowers, vegetables, herbs, succulents or as an ideal gift for planting enthusiast, gardener. It won't take up too much space, can put in windowsill, kitchen or outdoor.
- Greater genetic, crop-species, and landscape diversity.
- Redundant supply channels.
- Autonomy from external inputs and international markets.
- Self-organization and participatory breeding.
- Broader access rights to seeds.
These findings come from a sector-specific analysis of organizational publications, not a universal trial showing that every commons model outperforms every conventional system. The study is useful for identifying dimensions to consider—diversity, supply reliability, autonomy, participation, and access—but does not establish a single best model for all places or crops. See the FAO-hosted study summary.
What is the Karnataka project also called Seeds of Resilience?
Women’s Earth Alliance and Vanastree use the name for a separate initiative in the Malnad region of Karnataka, India. It supports rural women leaders and small-scale forest home gardeners through seed saving, training, seed access, women’s leadership, and the transfer of knowledge between generations. Women’s Earth Alliance reports that more than 4,000 women farmers have participated; the page does not date that headline figure, so it should be understood as the organization’s reported reach rather than an independently verified impact measure. Women’s Earth Alliance describes the project and its reported outcomes.

Manorama Joshi, whom the organization identifies as a Vanastree seed leader, describes the project’s inclusive vision this way: “Seeds have no caste, creed, religion or gender. They are universal.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What else uses the name?
The Global Resilience Partnership uses “seed” metaphorically for a local or regional initiative that is already being implemented but has not yet become mainstream. Its Seeds of Transformative Resilience program is separate from both the agricultural biodiversity compendium and the Karnataka project. The phrase alone therefore does not identify one organization or project.
