Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar is a single-player action RPG with roguelike runs, a two-weapon combat system, and exploration inspired by the Classic of Mountains and Seas. You play the Abyssal Dragon inhabiting Yi’s body, choose two weapon types, swap between them during a run, and combine their abilities with Adornments and Vessels. The Windows demo is available now, while Steam still lists the full game as “Coming soon.”
This guide explains the systems a new player can use immediately, how to plan a first run, how the Waystone compass works, and what the October 16, 2026 demo update added to the Heyang region. It does not treat any weapon as objectively best: the available official material provides no tier list or complete numerical balance data.

What is Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar?
Dinghai: The Ocean Pillar is a single-player action RPG built around repeatable roguelike runs. Its setting draws from the Classic of Mountains and Seas, combining storm-lashed mountains, celestial islands, and increasingly dangerous supernatural areas. The player takes the role of the Abyssal Dragon, who uses Yi’s body while travelling through this mythic world.
A run is designed as a learning cycle rather than a simple win-or-lose attempt. Each attempt presents new choices, and dying advances your understanding and strength instead of ending all progression. The official description frames the structure this way: “Every run is a fresh trial. Unlock new abilities, discover powerful combinations, and push deeper into a world that grows stranger and more dangerous the further you go.”

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
The main decisions are made in three connected layers:
- Weapon pair: choose two weapon types and switch between them as the situation changes.
- Abilities: select upgrades that change what each weapon can do during the current run.
- Adornments and Vessels: build-enhancing choices that can reinforce a weapon pair or compensate for its weaknesses.
The free Windows demo released on August 24, 2026. At the indexed 2026 Steam snapshot, the demo had 135 user reviews, with 80% marked positive. Those figures describe the demo listing at that point, not a final-release review score, and both the review count and sentiment can change.
How the two-weapon combat system works
Choose a pair before chasing a build
Named weapon types in the Steam description include swords, dual blades, and bows. You select two types for a run, then switch between them instead of carrying a large inventory of unrelated weapons. This makes the opening choice important: your pair determines which ranges, tempos, and ability combinations are worth prioritising.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a first attempt, use one pair for the entire run. Changing your plan every time a new choice appears makes it difficult to tell whether a problem came from positioning, timing, or an incoherent build. Once you understand how your chosen weapons behave, try a different pair and compare the experience directly.
How do I switch weapons?
Equip two weapon types, then use the weapon-switch command during combat to move between them. The available official description confirms the dual-weapon and switching system but does not publish a universal default keyboard key for it. Check the game’s current control bindings on your installation rather than relying on a key shown in an older guide or video.
Think of switching as a tactical decision, not a cosmetic animation. A practical sequence is to use the weapon that matches the enemy’s current distance, switch when the encounter’s spacing changes, and return to the first weapon when its useful ability or attack pattern is available again. Because the demo’s public material does not provide frame data or switching-speed values, learn the timing by performing deliberate swaps in a low-risk encounter before attempting a difficult boss.
Build around range and tempo
Range and tempo are the most useful beginner concepts. A close-range weapon can keep pressure on an enemy but may require you to remain in danger. A ranged option can create space, but it may be less comfortable when opponents reach you. A fast weapon can help you react to openings, while a slower pattern may reward waiting for a clear attack window. These are decision lenses, not published rankings.

When an ability choice appears, ask three questions:
- Does it improve the weapon you are using most often?
- Does it give the second weapon a reason to exist, such as a different range or tempo?
- Can an Adornment or Vessel later reinforce the same behaviour?
If an upgrade is powerful in isolation but pulls your two weapons in opposite directions, it may produce a less reliable run than a smaller upgrade that supports both.
Weapon-pair planning without a tier list
No official tier list, damage chart, or complete weapon-stat table has been published in the material available for the demo. Use the table below as a testing framework. It tells you what to observe rather than claiming that one pair is stronger than another.
| Pair to test | Switching speed | Range | Crowd control | Survivability | Adornment/Vessel questions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sword + dual blades | Observe whether the swap lets you change from a measured attack pattern to a faster one before an enemy closes. | Both are primarily close-range choices; check how comfortably you can approach groups. | Test whether the two attack patterns handle one target and several targets differently. | Look for choices that help you disengage or recover after committing to close range. | Prioritise effects that support sustained close-range pressure without making both weapons identical. |
| Sword + bow | Check how naturally you can leave close range and resume pressure from distance. | This pair gives you a clear melee-versus-ranged contrast to practise. | See which weapon handles a group while the other deals with a priority target. | Use the ranged option to create breathing room, then return to the sword when an opening is safe. | Look for effects that let abilities or Vessels bridge the gap between melee and ranged play. |
| Dual blades + bow | Test whether a fast close-range pattern can cover the time needed to reposition for ranged attacks. | Compare the pair’s ability to answer enemies at different distances. | Check which weapon is more dependable when several threats attack at once. | Watch for whether speed helps you escape danger or tempts you into overcommitting. | Choose effects that reinforce mobility, clear separation, or a deliberate alternation between weapons. |
Record what actually happens in your own runs: how often you can switch safely, which weapon solves a crowded encounter, and which choices leave you exposed. This simple log is more reliable than importing a ranking from a different demo build or update.

Adornments, Vessels, and Divine Skills
Adornments and Vessels
Adornments and Vessels are the main tools for turning a weapon pair into a coherent build. The public description confirms that both contribute to combinations, but it does not publish a complete catalogue of their effects. Read each choice in the context of your pair rather than selecting every item with the largest-looking individual benefit.
A useful priority order is:
- Cover a weakness: if both weapons struggle at a particular distance or against groups, favour a choice that gives you an answer.
- Reinforce your reliable action: if one attack pattern consistently creates safe openings, improve the part of the build you can execute.
- Support switching: select effects that give each weapon a distinct job instead of making the swap pointless.
- Keep the plan readable: a smaller number of compatible effects is easier to use than a collection of unrelated bonuses.
Divine Skills
The October 16, 2026 demo update added the Xiushe, Dijiang, and Zouwu Divine Skills. Their exact numerical effects and final-release balance are not specified in the available official material, so treat them as new options to test rather than guaranteed upgrades. When one appears, compare its behaviour with your pair’s range and tempo, then decide whether it improves a repeatable tactic or merely looks strong in a single situation.
What should I do in my first run?
Your first run should teach you the game’s rhythm, not prove that you can assemble a perfect build. Follow this sequence:

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
- Pick one weapon pair and commit to it. Use the first run to learn how the two weapons differ and when a swap is safe.
- Test both weapons early. Use a low-risk encounter to feel out their reach, attack tempo, and recovery before spending every upgrade on one side.
- Choose complementary abilities. Prefer upgrades that give the pair a clear close-range, ranged, single-target, or multi-target role.
- Read Adornments and Vessels as a package. Select effects that repair a weakness or strengthen a tactic you can perform consistently.
- Use the route as practice. Notice where the stage branches, where enemies force you to change distance, and where a Waystone appears.
- Switch deliberately. Do not swap after every attack. Change when the second weapon answers a specific threat or creates a safer opening.
- Accept death as information. Note the encounter, range, or decision that ended the run, then alter one part of the plan on your next attempt.
Do not judge a weapon pair from one unlucky run. Roguelike choices vary from attempt to attempt, and the game’s stated progression model treats failure as part of learning and strengthening.
How exploration and Waystones work
Use the compass when the route is unclear
The demo update added a compass that points Yi toward the Waystone. Press M on a keyboard, or press D-pad Down on a controller, to activate it. Yi flies toward the Waystone along a golden trail.
Use the compass after you have checked the immediate area and still cannot identify the intended route. Following the golden trail prevents a navigation mistake from consuming an entire run, while briefly exploring first helps you learn the stage instead of treating the compass as an automatic route planner.
Make Waystones part of your route memory
When you encounter a Waystone, note its position relative to the surrounding path. The update also added mid-stage saving, so a Waystone is now relevant both as a navigation destination and as a landmark in a longer attempt. The available material does not specify every save condition or whether all progress is retained in every situation; use the current in-game behaviour as the authority.
A practical exploration loop is:
- Check nearby branches before moving on.
- Remember the last Waystone you passed.
- Activate the compass if the next objective is not obvious.
- Follow the golden trail rather than wandering through previously cleared space.
- After reaching the Waystone, pause long enough to identify the next route and reassess your weapon roles.
What is new in Heyang?
The October 16, 2026 demo update added the Heyang stage, the Xingtian boss, the hidden Zouwu boss, Aquasunder Dual Blades, new Vessels, the Zouwu Spirit Beast, and the Xiushe, Dijiang, and Zouwu Divine Skills. It also introduced mid-stage saving and the compass described above.
Heyang stage
Heyang is a new demo area within the game’s mythic world. Approach it as an additional environment for learning route recognition and build adaptation. The sources do not establish Heyang’s final full-release reward balance, so do not assume that every reward, encounter, or layout in the demo will ship unchanged.
Xingtian and hidden Zouwu bosses
Xingtian is a named boss in the update. Zouwu is identified as a hidden boss, which means you should explore beyond the most direct route if you want to look for it. No reliable attack list, health value, or recommended weapon ranking is provided, so learn each fight by observing its tells and by keeping both weapons useful at different distances.

Steam tags the game as controller-supported and single-player. A controller is therefore an optional input choice, not a requirement. If you use one, remember that the compass command is D-pad Down; on keyboard it is M in the updated demo.
Before installing the demo
- Confirm that the computer runs Windows 11.
- Compare both your processor and graphics hardware with the published minimum, not just one of them.
- Check that 16 GB of RAM is available for the minimum configuration; 32 GB is the listed recommended amount.
- Use an SSD if possible, since the store listing recommends one.
- Decide whether keyboard controls or a controller will make weapon switching and compass use more comfortable.
Hardware below the minimum may still launch in some circumstances, but the published listing does not promise performance outside those specifications. The full release remains listed as coming soon, and no final release date is established.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Trying to master every weapon at once
Symptom: every run feels different, and you cannot tell which choice caused a failure.
Fix: keep the same two weapons for several attempts. Change one ability or one Vessel at a time so you can identify what improves the run.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring the second weapon
Symptom: one weapon does all the work while the other is only equipped on paper.

Choosing upgrades by appearance alone
Symptom: a run contains several impressive-sounding effects but no dependable tactic.

The demo is the appropriate place to learn the combat loop because it contains the documented weapon-switching, Adornment, Vessel, exploration, and roguelike systems, plus the Heyang update’s added content. It is also the only current form of the game identified in the available material: the full version is still marked “Coming soon,” with no confirmed release date.
Approach it as a playable introduction rather than a promise that every system, reward balance, or boss pattern is final. Start with one weapon pair, use the compass to keep exploration moving, and treat each failed run as information about positioning and build choices. That method matches the game’s stated design and gives you a useful foundation for later regions and updates.
