The route centers on finding the N-Ray Scanner, using it to reveal hazards and invisible cultists, and deciding how to handle Victor at the end.
How to start Discrete Mathematics
During On the Trail of the Traitor, travel to the N-Ray Range in Golden Ridge and speak with Exemplar Foxworth. Game8 and NightlyGamingBinge identify this as the quest’s start and classify it as a main quest; no official source confirming that classification was available. (Game8; NightlyGamingBinge)
Find the N-Ray Scanner
- Use the vent behind Foxworth to enter the facility.
- Time your movement through the electrical hazard, then drop into the adjoining room.
- Crouch beneath the shelf and follow the hall to the room with the N-Ray Scanner on a desk.
- Pick up and use the scanner. It reveals invisible enemies, wiring through walls, and traps that are otherwise difficult to see.
This route and scanner guidance are reported by NightlyGamingBinge.
Open the range and contact Victor
Use the scanner to trace the wiring to the door circuit. NightlyGamingBinge reports the switch sequence as 8, 2, 5; treat this as that guide’s sequence and check the circuit in your game rather than assuming it applies unchanged. Continue through the range, deal with the invisible cultists, and use the intercom to speak with Victor. (NightlyGamingBinge; Game8)

Inspect Victor’s terminal and search the facility
Take the vent route into Victor’s office and read the terminal messages. NightlyGamingBinge says they contribute to an objective in the surrounding main quest and can provide information for the confrontation. The guide also reports a Tossball Card: Marco Miranda in the vent area.
Proceed through the facility, defeat enemies, and speak with Novice Archivist Trammell when he emerges. Use the scanner to follow the visible-in-scanner traps and wiring. The route described by NightlyGamingBinge uses a lever and vents to power doors and disable a laser barrier; it also reports a Pitchball Card: Sound Martilik before a walkway gap. Choose whether to kill or spare Victor
The guides describe two possible outcomes, but they do not give identical accounts of the conditions for a peaceful resolution. Game8 says saving Foxworth supports sparing Victor; NightlyGamingBinge recommends bringing Marisol and says Victor’s terminal messages can be used against him. Treat these as guide-reported factors, not a guaranteed dialogue recipe. If you want to compare outcomes, make a save before the confrontation and check the dialogue options available in your playthrough. (Game8; NightlyGamingBinge)
| Choice | Reported result | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Spare Victor | Game8 reports that Victor reveals de Vries’ plans, awards the Maintenance Hatch Key, and leads to a later janitor appearance. | Saving Foxworth is cited by Game8 as supporting this outcome. NightlyGamingBinge also points to Marisol and Victor’s terminal messages; the exact requirements are not consistently established. |
| Kill Victor | Game8 reports that you can take the Maintenance Hatch Key from his body, but do not learn the plans from him. | This sacrifices the reported information gained by sparing him. |
These outcomes and the quest’s reported 4,860 XP reward come from Game8’s 2025 walkthrough, not an official reward listing. (Game8)

Do the related side quest before advancing
Game8 warns that completing both Discrete Mathematics and Beginning at the Endpoint can trigger a later rockslide that may cause the separate Present and Future Company Excluded side quest to be missed or fail if it remains unfinished. If that side quest matters to you, complete it before advancing past the point described in Game8’s walkthrough. This warning is a secondary-guide report. (Game8)
