Sony Halts PlayStation 2 Production After a 13-Year Run

Sony’s PS2 production halt was reported in late 2012, but the 13-year lifecycle framing is rounded: Sony’s official record dates the Japanese launch to March 4, 2000, and does not give one final production date for every market.

Sony’s PlayStation 2 production halt was reported at the end of 2012, more than 12 years after the console’s Japanese launch. The “13 years” framing is a rounded description of the PS2’s long life: Sony’s official record dates its Japanese debut to March 4, 2000, but the sources available do not establish one final production date for every market.

When did the PlayStation 2 launch and when did production end?

Sony’s 2000 annual report says the PlayStation 2 went on sale in Japan on March 4, 2000. The report described North American and European launches as planned for October 2000; those were plans stated at the time, not confirmation here of each region’s eventual retail launch date.

On December 31, 2012, ExtremeTech published James Plafke’s headline, “13 years after the PlayStation 2 changed the industry, Sony finally halts production.” Contemporary coverage reported a production halt, including a Digital Trends retrospective published January 7, 2013. Sony’s cited official records do not specify the precise final manufacturing date across all regions. So the headline’s 13 years is a rounded lifecycle description—not a verified interval from a single worldwide launch to a single worldwide shutdown.

Why could the PS2 remain in production so long?

It combined a new console with access to an existing game library

The PS2 played PlayStation titles as well as games made for the new system. That backward compatibility gave owners a way to carry forward part of an existing library while moving to newer hardware.

#1 Best Overall
Sony PlayStation 2 Console - Black (Renewed)
  • The Playstation 2 system lets you play original PS1 games as well as the huge selection of PS2 games
  • Includes: Playstation 2 System, 1 Dual Shock 2 Controller, AC Cable, AV Cable
  • Color: Black
  • PlayStation2 is equipped with a 128-bit Emotion Engine processor that enables lightning-fast gameplay and impressive graphics power

It also played DVD-Video

The console brought DVD movie playback and video games together in one device. In Sony’s 2000 annual report, Ken Kutaragi, then president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., described the system as pairing image-rendering capabilities with PlayStation compatibility and DVD-Video playback. That was Sony’s promotional assessment, but the combination itself helps explain the console’s broad home-entertainment pitch.

Demand arrived quickly

Sony reported that shipments exceeded two million units in less than three months after launch. That early milestone shows the scale of initial demand, although it does not by itself explain how long production continued.

What did Sony say the PlayStation platform had achieved?

In an April 26, 2007 management announcement, Sony said the PlayStation platforms had opened a vast computer-entertainment market. It also reported more than two billion software titles shipped for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 combined. That is a combined figure for software shipments across both platforms—not a PS2-only total, and not a count of consoles sold.

What the production-halt report does—and does not—establish

  • Established: Sony’s annual report dates the Japanese launch to March 4, 2000, and contemporary press coverage reported that production was halted.
  • Not established by the cited official records: a precise final manufacturing date for every market, or a single date on which production ended worldwide.
  • Not established here: a final PS2-only lifetime console-sales total. Sony’s reported two-billion-plus software figure covers PlayStation and PS2 titles together and should not be treated as console sales.

The most accurate summary is therefore that Sony’s production halt was reported in late 2012, after a remarkably long console lifecycle, while the exact end date by region remains unspecified in the cited official material.
