If the colored capacity bar under a drive has disappeared in This PC, treat it first as a File Explorer display problem—not proof that the disk is failing. Open File Explorer, select This PC, choose View, and switch to a tile-oriented layout such as Tiles. If the bar still does not return, restart Windows and install pending updates. Then verify the drive independently at Settings > System > Storage > Disks & volumes. A drive that appears there with normal capacity and usage is usually healthy; only a genuinely low-free-space result calls for cleanup or additional storage.

What does the missing bar in This PC actually mean?

The bar is a visual capacity indicator that File Explorer can display beneath a drive tile. It summarizes used and available space; it is not a hardware diagnostic. Its disappearance alone does not establish that Windows lost files, that the drive is damaged, or that you need a new SSD.

File Explorer can show the same drives in several layouts, including icons, lists, details, and tiles. The capacity graphic is associated with a tile-oriented presentation, so changing the view can remove or restore it without changing a single file. This is why the least risky first action is a view change rather than deletion, formatting, registry editing, or hardware replacement.

The symptom can appear on Windows 11 or Windows 10 and may affect only one folder view or all drives in This PC. The wording can vary: “disk space bar missing,” “drive storage bar disappeared,” “no capacity bar under C:,” or “This PC not showing free space bar” all describe the same basic display issue.

How do I restore the capacity bar in File Explorer?

Switch This PC to a tile-oriented view, then allow File Explorer to redraw the drive tiles. The change is reversible and does not modify your data.

  1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar or Start menu.
  2. Select This PC in the navigation pane. The drives should appear under Devices and drives.
  3. Select View. In Windows 11, this is on the command bar; in Windows 10, it is on the ribbon.
  4. Choose Tiles, or another view that presents drives as tiles rather than a plain list or details table.
  5. Wait a few seconds for Explorer to refresh. Check whether each drive tile now shows its colored bar and free-space text.

Microsoft describes the View menu as the control for changing how items appear in File Explorer. A tile-oriented mode is the practical choice when you want the graphical capacity indicator. If you prefer Details view for file management, you can keep it; the missing bar is then a presentation choice rather than a storage fault.

What if the View menu does not show the same labels?

Windows 10 and Windows 11 use different command-bar designs, and feature updates can move the controls. Look for View, then inspect the layout choices for Tiles or another icon-based option. Do not confuse Details with a tile layout: Details is useful for columns such as size and date, but it normally does not present the large colored capacity graphic.

What should I do if Tiles does not bring the bar back?

Use the least disruptive refresh steps before investigating storage or changing system settings. A stale Explorer process, a pending Windows update, or a temporary shell glitch can leave the interface out of sync with the drive.

  1. Close extra File Explorer windows and reopen This PC.
  2. Restart the computer from Start > Power > Restart. A restart reloads the Windows shell and storage information without deleting personal files.
  3. After signing in, open Settings > Windows Update (or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on many Windows 10 builds) and select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates, restart when Windows requests it, and check This PC again.

These steps address an unreliable or stale File Explorer interface. They are different from freeing disk space: restarting and updating do not remove large games, recordings, or downloads.

How can I tell whether the drive itself is really low on space?

Check storage in Settings instead of relying on the bar. This gives you an independent reading of the disk and volume, so you can separate a cosmetic Explorer issue from a real capacity problem.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Storage.
  3. Open Disks & volumes. (On some Windows releases, you may need to select an advanced storage option before this page appears.)
  4. Locate the affected disk or volume and compare its listed capacity and current usage with what you expect from This PC.

Microsoft describes Disks & volumes as a place that lists connected disks and volumes and provides their type, capacity, and current usage. If the volume is present and the numbers are normal, the absent bar is cosmetic. You can continue using the drive and focus on restoring the Explorer view.

If the Settings page shows very little free space, the bar may have been warning you accurately before it disappeared. If the volume is missing entirely, capacity is dramatically different, or Windows reports an error, stop treating this as only a visual problem. Record what Settings reports and investigate the storage connection or disk condition separately rather than deleting files at random.

Which fix should I choose: restore the display or manage storage?

Your next step depends on evidence from Disks & volumes. The two paths have different goals and different risks.

Path Evidence Action File risk
Display restoration The drive appears in Storage settings and capacity is normal Change File Explorer to a tile-oriented view; restart Explorer or the device; install Windows updates None to low; no files need to be deleted
Storage management Storage settings show genuinely low free space Use Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, or Disk Cleanup after reviewing selections Potentially destructive; selected temporary files or Recycle Bin contents can be removed

Do not take the storage-management path merely because the graphic is absent. Conversely, do not keep changing views when Settings confirms that the volume is full; a display fix will not create usable space.

How do I free space safely when the drive is actually full?

Use Windows’ built-in storage tools and review what each tool proposes before confirming deletion. They are intended for real low-space conditions, not for repairing a missing visual indicator.

Storage Sense

Storage Sense can automatically remove selected temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. Open Settings > System > Storage, select Storage Sense, and review the available cleanup settings. Choose when automatic cleanup may run and which categories it may remove; do not enable a category whose contents you still need.

Storage Sense is useful when space pressure recurs because it can automate routine cleanup. It is not a replacement for reviewing large personal files, game installations, or projects that you may want to move rather than delete.

Cleanup recommendations

In Settings > System > Storage, open Cleanup recommendations when that option is available. Windows groups candidates such as temporary files and other removable content, then shows the potential space benefit. Expand the categories and inspect the selections before choosing Clean up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay attention to any category that could contain files you expect to keep. The safest cleanup is intentional: identify the category, verify that it is disposable, and only then confirm removal.

Disk Cleanup

Search Start for Disk Cleanup, select the affected drive, and let Windows calculate removable items. Review the checkboxes, then choose OK and confirm deletion. If Windows offers Clean up system files, selecting it can reveal additional system cleanup categories; read each description before proceeding.

Disk Cleanup is a space-management tool, not a repair for Explorer’s layout. If the drive has normal free space, running it simply to make the missing bar reappear is unnecessary.

Should I buy an SSD or plug in an external drive?

Additional storage is justified only when Settings confirms a capacity problem or when Windows needs more working space for a specific operation, such as an update. It is not a remedy for a missing bar when the existing volume reports normal capacity.

  • Consider external storage when you need temporary room for an update or a longer-term place for files that do not fit comfortably on the internal volume.
  • Consider replacing or expanding internal storage only after confirming sustained capacity pressure and ensuring that your backups and migration plan are in place.

Buying hardware before checking Disks & volumes can solve the wrong problem and add cost without restoring Explorer’s display.

Why can the bar disappear on only one drive?

Each drive tile is rendered from the volume information Explorer receives. A view change, a delayed refresh, or a difference in how a removable, network, or local volume is presented can make one tile look different from another. The visual symptom does not prove that the affected drive has a different physical fault.

Compare the affected volume with another drive in both This PC and Settings > System > Storage > Disks & volumes. If only the Explorer graphic differs while Settings shows the expected capacity and usage, keep troubleshooting the interface. If the underlying listing or capacity is also wrong, document that discrepancy before taking cleanup or hardware actions.

What should I avoid while troubleshooting?

  • Do not delete files just to make a bar appear. Confirm low free space first.
  • Do not format the drive. Formatting is unrelated to a missing capacity graphic and can destroy data.
  • Do not edit the registry as a first response. The supported, reversible checks are the File Explorer view, a restart, Windows Update, and Storage settings.
  • Do not assume a missing color means failure. Verify the volume and its numbers in Disks & volumes.
  • Do not ignore a real low-space warning. If Settings confirms that free space is scarce, use the cleanup tools and plan additional capacity before an update or installation fails.

When is the problem more than a cosmetic Explorer issue?

Escalate beyond view troubleshooting when the drive does not appear in Disks & volumes, its reported capacity is implausible, or Windows displays an error while accessing it. Those findings concern the volume, connection, or storage device rather than the color bar. Preserve important data first and use the exact error text when seeking device-specific support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A bar that remains missing while the drive opens normally, has the expected capacity, and passes ordinary file access checks is a presentation problem. It may remain absent in a non-tile layout even though the storage is fully usable.

Can I verify free space without the colored bar?

Yes. File Explorer can show drive information in other layouts, and Windows Settings provides a separate capacity and usage view. Use Settings > System > Storage > Disks & volumes when you need a definitive check rather than a visual cue.

This distinction matters on gaming PCs: a missing bar does not tell you whether a large game update will fit. Check the numeric free-space information before starting the update, then clean up or add capacity only if the numbers require it.

What is the complete safe sequence?

Follow these steps in order so that each action answers a different question and avoids unnecessary file changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open File Explorer and select This PC.
  2. Select View > Tiles, or another tile-oriented layout, and wait for the drive tiles to redraw.
  3. If the bar is still absent, restart Windows and check for updates under Settings > Windows Update.
  4. Open Settings > System > Storage > Disks & volumes and compare the affected volume’s capacity and current usage.
  5. If capacity is normal, stop deleting files and continue using the drive; the remaining issue is cosmetic.
  6. If free space is genuinely low, review Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, and Disk Cleanup, confirming every category before removal.
  7. Use external storage only for a confirmed space requirement, such as making room for a Windows update or moving files you want to keep.

This sequence starts with a reversible display change, verifies the underlying storage independently, and reserves potentially destructive actions for the case that the numbers prove they are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will changing the File Explorer view delete or move my files?

No. Switching between Tiles, Details, icons, and other layouts changes presentation only. Your files, drive letters, and folder contents remain unchanged.

Does a missing bar mean my Windows drive is failing?

Not by itself. Check whether the volume appears with plausible capacity and usage under Settings > System > Storage > Disks & volumes; a normal listing points to an Explorer display issue.

Why did the bar vanish after a Windows update?

An update can leave Explorer needing a refresh or can change the location of view controls. Restart Windows, select a tile-oriented layout, and check Windows Update again before attempting storage cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Storage Sense restore the missing capacity graphic?

Storage Sense frees space; it does not control File Explorer’s layout. Use it only when Storage settings confirms that the drive is actually low on free space.
