DiskCryptor is an open-source Windows utility that encrypts entire system partitions, data partitions, and external USB storage. It supports AES, Twofish, and Serpent (including combinations), pre-boot authentication, key files, UEFI/GPT and MBR boot modes, and optional command-line control. That makes it useful for protecting a gaming PC, a secondary data drive, or a removable game library when you are prepared to manage boot recovery yourself.
The important qualification is maturity: DiskCryptor is actively maintained but intentionally labels its builds BETA, releases infrequently, and says there will be no “FINAL” release. The GitHub release page lists version 2.0.0 as a pre-release dated 4 July 2026. It introduces major boot and key-management changes, so treat it as a pre-release rather than an automatic production recommendation.

What is DiskCryptor, and what does it encrypt?
DiskCryptor is a GPLv3-licensed, open-source disk-encryption program for Windows. Its basic unit is a volume or partition, not an individual file or folder. You can encrypt a Windows system partition, a separate internal data partition, or supported external media such as a USB drive. Encryption is transparent after authentication: Windows and applications see the mounted volume normally, while data stored on the device remains encrypted when the volume is locked.
This partition-level model suits people who want to protect an entire game drive, recordings drive, backup disk, or laptop rather than select a few documents. It also means you must plan around the whole volume. A single game folder cannot be isolated with DiskCryptor’s documented partition encryption; put that folder on a dedicated partition or use a different tool designed for file or container encryption.

Which encryption algorithms and hardware features does DiskCryptor support?
DiskCryptor documents three block ciphers and allows them to be used individually or in combinations. Hardware acceleration is available when the processor exposes the relevant instruction set.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Capability | What DiskCryptor documents |
|---|---|
| Algorithms | AES, Twofish, and Serpent |
| Algorithm combinations | Supported combinations of the documented ciphers |
| CPU acceleration | Intel or AMD AES-NI, and VIA PadLock where supported |
| SSD behavior | TRIM support |
| Disk layouts | Dynamic disks and large-sector devices |
Choosing a cipher combination is a risk-and-maintenance decision, not a simple “more is always better” setting. AES-NI can reduce the cost of AES operations on compatible Intel and AMD systems, but the reviewed official sources do not publish comparable throughput numbers for different algorithms or combinations. Select a configuration you can document and recover, and test the complete boot-and-unlock process before committing valuable data.
Does DiskCryptor work with Windows 11 and UEFI/GPT?
DiskCryptor’s documentation covers UEFI/GPT and MBR boot loaders, so its architecture is not limited to legacy BIOS machines. A Windows 11 computer normally uses UEFI and GPT, but that fact alone is not a compatibility guarantee for every motherboard, firmware update, or DiskCryptor build. Verify the release notes for your exact version and hardware, and keep a recovery path before encrypting the system volume.
How the system-volume boot chain works
When the Windows system partition is encrypted, the machine must authenticate before Windows can read the volume. DiskCryptor places a loader in the boot path, presents pre-boot authentication, and then hands control to Windows. UEFI/GPT and MBR use different boot structures; multi-boot and third-party loaders add another dependency. An external boot medium can also be part of the design, particularly when you use a key file or keep boot components off the internal disk.

What to verify on a gaming PC
- Confirm whether firmware is set to UEFI or legacy/CSM and whether the disk uses GPT or MBR.
- Record your current boot order and any other operating systems or boot managers.
- Check motherboard-specific issues in the release notes. The 2.0.0 notes, dated 5 July 2026, report boot or driver failures on some ASUS laptops with Qualcomm CPUs.
- Do not assume a future Windows update will preserve a third-party EFI loader.
What should you back up before encrypting a system drive?
Make recovery preparation a prerequisite, not an optional extra. Low-level encryption can make data loss irreversible if the process is interrupted or a key is mishandled. You need an offline copy of important files, Windows recovery media, and a written copy of the recovery procedure and settings.
- Make and test an offline backup. Copy game saves, documents, configuration files, and any irreplaceable media to a separate device. Open several files from that backup on another machine or after safely disconnecting the original.
- Create Windows recovery media. Ensure you can reach Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) without relying on the encrypted installation.
- Record the disk layout. Note the EFI System Partition, Windows partition, recovery partitions, drive letters, and whether the disk is GPT or MBR.
- Protect key files. Store each key file on more than one offline medium, keep one copy separate from the computer, and label which volume it unlocks. A key file is not a replacement for a backup.
- Capture the boot configuration. Write down firmware boot-order settings and keep a USB boot medium available if your plan uses external boot files.
- Pause risky maintenance. Avoid starting encryption immediately before a firmware flash, major Windows upgrade, or planned hardware change.
Do not begin until you can restore the machine or recover the files without the encrypted Windows installation. There is no documented guarantee that a damaged boot chain or interrupted volume operation can be repaired without such preparation.
How do you encrypt a system, data, or USB partition?
The exact labels can change between DiskCryptor builds, but the workflow follows the volume-processing model documented by the project. Start with a noncritical test volume so you learn how authentication, mounting, and recovery behave on your hardware.
- Install the chosen build and read its release notes. Treat a pre-release build differently from a mature production tool; note known issues that affect your hardware.
- Identify the target volume. Select the intended system partition, internal data partition, or USB device and double-check its size and contents. A wrong selection can destroy the wrong disk.
- Choose the cipher and authentication method. Select AES, Twofish, Serpent, or a documented combination, then configure a password and, where appropriate, a key file or independent key slot.
- Set boot behavior for system volumes. Configure the pre-boot loader and authentication mode appropriate to UEFI/GPT or MBR. For a data or USB volume, configure how and when it will mount instead.
- Start processing with stable power. Keep a desktop connected to mains power and do not disconnect a USB drive during encryption. Do not force a reboot because the interface appears busy.
- Reboot and test authentication. For a system volume, confirm that the pre-boot prompt appears and Windows starts. For removable media, safely eject, reconnect, unlock, and verify that expected files open.
- Test the recovery plan. Before storing the only copy of a game library or save archive on the encrypted volume, confirm that your backup and WinRE media are usable.
DiskCryptor also documents automatic mounting, hotkeys, external boot media, and an optional CLI. Use those conveniences only after the basic password-and-recovery path works; automation should not hide which volumes are being unlocked.
What happens if a Windows update breaks the DiskCryptor bootloader?
A Windows update can restore \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi as the active path instead of the DiskCryptor loader. The documented symptom is a machine that enters Windows recovery rather than showing the DiskCryptor pre-boot authentication screen.

Recovery sequence
- Boot into Windows Recovery Environment using the recovery media or the machine’s recovery options.
- Open the command environment and identify the EFI System Partition and the Windows partition. Drive letters in WinRE may differ from those used in normal Windows.
- Mount the EFI System Partition with a temporary drive letter.
- Restore the DiskCryptor EFI loader files to the EFI partition using the copies supplied by your DiskCryptor installation or recovery media.
- Correct the firmware boot path so the DiskCryptor loader is selected instead of the restored Microsoft path.
- Restart, authenticate at the DiskCryptor prompt, and confirm Windows starts before removing the recovery media.
The project README supplies the relevant WinRE commands; keep a printed or offline copy because you may not have access to the encrypted system when the failure occurs. Do not guess at partition letters or overwrite EFI files on an unrelated disk. If the machine uses a custom multi-boot arrangement, restore that arrangement only after the DiskCryptor path works.
Is DiskCryptor still maintained, and what does the BETA label mean?
The official FAQ describes DiskCryptor as actively maintained but says releases are infrequent because the software is mature. It also states plainly that there will not be a final release. In this project, BETA is an intentional warning and a legal and practical boundary, not a promise that a conventional 1.0-style release is coming.
That posture can be reasonable for an experienced administrator who values an open-source Windows tool and can manage recovery. It is a poor fit for anyone who needs a vendor-style support contract, predictable release cadence, or a simple “install and forget” experience. Keep version records, test updates on a spare volume, and avoid assuming that an old procedure remains correct after a boot architecture change.
What changed in DiskCryptor 2.0.0?
The GitHub releases page lists DiskCryptor 2.0.0 as a pre-release dated 4 July 2026. The maintainer describes it as the largest update in many years. Its changes affect both security configuration and boot operations:
The Tool Desk

Does DiskCryptor support Secure Boot and TPM?
In the 2.0.0 pre-release, optional TPM integration and Secure Boot support are tied to a DiskCryptor Pro Supporter Certificate. This is a specific requirement for those optional functions, not a claim that every DiskCryptor installation has them. If you do not have the required certificate, plan around the documented non-TPM and non-Secure-Boot workflow and confirm the exact build’s behavior.
Secure Boot also changes the trust relationship between firmware and the boot loader. Test the complete sequence—firmware validation, DiskCryptor authentication, and Windows startup—on the target motherboard before encrypting irreplaceable data. A firmware reset or key-policy change can require recovery even when the encrypted volume itself is healthy.

Both projects provide open-source disk encryption, but their documented scope and operating-system coverage differ. VeraCrypt’s SourceForge listing describes support for Windows, Linux, and macOS, with UEFI and MBR system encryption. DiskCryptor is Windows-focused and emphasizes partition encryption integrated into the Windows boot path.

How should gamers use encrypted external drives safely?
An encrypted USB SSD or hard drive can protect a portable game library, captures, mods, and backups when the device is unplugged. Treat the drive as a security component, not merely extra storage.

- Use a dedicated volume when the entire device does not need encryption.
- Keep the unlock password and key file under separate control; do not leave both beside the drive.
- Wait for the volume to finish mounting before launching a game, and safely eject it before unplugging.
- Keep a second, offline backup of saves and configuration files. Encryption protects confidentiality; it does not protect against disk failure, accidental deletion, or ransomware.
- Test the drive on the Windows computers where you expect to use it, especially if they have different USB controllers or firmware policies.
A small USB flash drive can serve as key-file storage or boot media, but it should not be the only copy of either. Label removable media without revealing the password, and store recovery instructions where you can access them if the primary PC will not boot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can DiskCryptor encrypt only one game or folder?
No. Its documented encryption target is a complete partition or volume. Put the game on a dedicated partition if you need separation, or use file- or container-encryption software for folder-level protection.

The official material documents AES-NI and other hardware acceleration but publishes no independent, comparable gaming benchmark. Performance depends on the cipher, processor, storage device, and workload, so test a noncritical volume on your own system rather than relying on a universal percentage.
What if I lose a DiskCryptor key file?
A key file is an authentication factor, not a recovery backup. Keep multiple offline copies in separate locations and document which volume each copy belongs to; losing every usable copy can leave the encrypted data inaccessible.
Can a firmware reset force me into recovery even when the disk is intact?
Yes. Firmware boot-order changes, Secure Boot policy changes, or a Windows update replacing the EFI path can prevent the DiskCryptor loader from starting. Keep WinRE media and your EFI recovery procedure available so you can restore the boot path without formatting the encrypted volume.
