Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King is most worthwhile as an archival package for fans of the original games: it brings together multiple versions, historical material and modern assists such as rewind and saves. The platformers themselves can feel dated, difficult and brief, so newcomers looking primarily for contemporary level design may be less taken with them. Before buying, check whether the edition on your platform is the original 2019 two-game release or the later expanded collection.
What’s included in the 2019 collection?
The 2019 release is a collection of Aladdin and The Lion King, not the later package that adds The Jungle Book and another version of Aladdin. Digital Eclipse Senior Producer Stephen Frost’s feature article describes the games and restoration work.
It includes versions from Genesis and Japanese Mega Drive, Game Boy adaptations, and a colorized Game Boy version. The Lion King also has its SNES version. The collection adds an Aladdin “Final Cut,” a short trade-show demo, museum material, developer interviews, concept art and other production history.
Modern options include rewind, save states, display and aspect-ratio choices, CRT-style filters, level skips and invulnerability. An interactive game viewer lets players watch a playthrough and jump in. The Steam listing also describes the Final Cut as having difficulty adjustments, camera refinements and bug fixes.

How do the games hold up?
The reviewers’ shared strength is preservation: the collection makes multiple versions accessible and surrounds them with useful historical extras. Push Square’s PS4 review scored it 7/10, praising the museum content, ports and accessibility features.
The games themselves are a less certain draw. Nintendo Life’s Switch review scored the collection 6/10, citing dated level design, difficult sections and short length, while also recognizing the extras and emulation. Push Square likewise notes that the games show their age and that some menus can be confusing.

The collection’s assists help address the difficulty barrier, but they do not turn the original games into modern platformers. Their appeal is strongest when playing the historical versions is part of the point, rather than an obstacle to getting through a new adventure.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Fans returning to the games: Multiple versions and rewind or save options make it easier to revisit familiar stages without having to accept every old-school frustration.
- Players interested in game history: The museum material, interviews, concept art and unusual demo offer context beyond simply replaying the two main games.
- Players seeking a modern platformer: The reviews’ concerns about dated design, difficulty and short length are reasons to temper expectations. The archival extras may not be enough if those are not part of the appeal.
The Game Boy adaptations may be valuable for historical completeness, but Push Square says they look crude on a modern TV. They are better approached as artifacts of the collection than as the strongest way to experience the games.

Which version should you buy?
First confirm the exact package. Nintendo Life’s 2019 review initially noted that Capcom’s SNES Aladdin was missing, then updated its coverage to report a DLC pack launched in November 2021 with that game and three versions of The Jungle Book. The later Xbox collection listing describes the expanded package. Availability and packaging can vary by platform, so check the store page for the specific release and add-ons before purchase.
If you want the original two-game set, choose the 2019 release. If you want the broader archive, look for the expanded collection or confirm that the relevant DLC is included or available for your platform. Then weigh the museum material and version selection against how much retro difficulty you are willing to tolerate. Saves, rewind, skips and invulnerability provide ways to reduce friction; use them according to the experience you want.

Is it suitable for children?
Common Sense Media recommends the game for ages 8 and up and describes cartoon violence without blood or gore. It also notes reconfigurable controls and multiple difficulty options. Verdict
Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King is a stronger preservation package than it is a showcase of timeless platform design. It is a worthwhile pick for nostalgia and game-history fans who value the versions, extras and assists. For everyone else, the dated design and retro challenge make the collection a more conditional recommendation. Verify whether you are buying the 2019 release or the later expanded package before choosing.
