Start with updates, requirements, and reversible settings changes. Dispatch crashes and stutters on Windows are most usefully diagnosed by updating the game and graphics driver, checking the published hardware baseline, disabling overlays, and temporarily turning off subtitle animation. Restore VSync if you see tearing or black frames. On Steam Deck, update SteamOS on the Stable channel and try Proton 9.0-4 or the latest compatibility tool bundled with Steam.

These steps come from AdHoc Studio’s official Dispatch FAQ and Steam’s current listing. They are troubleshooting tests, not guarantees: meeting the requirements does not rule out a game bug, and the October 22, 2026 patch (version 1.0.19512) adds Deluxe Edition Commentary and Storyboard modes without claiming to be a universal crash fix.

What should I do first when Dispatch crashes or stutters?

Update everything before changing advanced settings. This creates a known starting point and follows the developer’s first recommendation for PC crashes. It also prevents you from testing an older game build against an older driver and then drawing the wrong conclusion.

  1. Update Dispatch in Steam. Open your Library, right-click Dispatch, choose Properties, open Updates, and allow any pending download to finish. Wait for the download and any disk installation to complete before pressing Play.
  2. Install current Windows updates. Restart Windows after an update if it requests one. A restart also closes a driver or game process that may still be held in memory.
  3. Update the graphics driver. Use the current driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer, then reboot. AdHoc Studio’s FAQ says: “If you are experiencing PC crashes, check the minimum specs and ensure all graphics drivers are up to date.”
  4. Confirm free storage. Steam lists 15 GB of available storage. Leave enough free space for the game update to download and install rather than testing with a nearly full drive.
  5. Reproduce the same symptom. Use the same save, scene, or launch path after each change. Changing one setting at a time makes it clear which test altered the behavior.

Write down the starting symptom before making changes: a crash before the menu, a crash in a particular scene, a freeze with audio still playing, stutter that worsens over time, black frames, or tearing. The symptom determines which test is most informative. If the game still fails, continue with the platform-specific checks below rather than repeatedly launching with several unknown variables changed.

What PC hardware and software does Dispatch require?

Steam’s Dispatch listing specifies the following Windows baseline. The minimum row is a compatibility threshold, not a promise of stable performance; the recommended row is a stronger target for heavier scenes.

Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit or later Windows 10 64-bit or later
Processor Intel Core i5-6402P or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or higher Intel Core i5-7400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or higher
Memory 2 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or AMD Radeon RX 560 NVIDIA GTX 1050 or AMD Radeon RX 580
Graphics API DirectX 11 DirectX 11
Storage 15 GB available 15 GB available

Valve’s current store listing was accessed October 29, 2026. It specifically lists 2 GB RAM minimum, 16 GB recommended, DirectX 11, and 15 GB of available storage. Check the actual model in Windows System Information or your GPU control panel rather than relying on a brand family name. “Higher” in the listing does not mean that every newer part behaves identically, but it gives support a useful baseline.

If your system is below a listed requirement, correct that limitation before treating overlays or visual settings as the primary cause. If it meets the requirement, bugs, drivers, overlays, memory behavior, or a particular scene can still be responsible. Requirements also do not establish a fixed frame rate, a guaranteed absence of stutter, or compatibility with every driver release.

Should I buy new hardware to stop a crash?

Not as a first response. The published requirements are the only hardware baseline in the Steam listing, and no GPU, CPU, RAM kit, SSD, controller, headset, or other accessory is identified as a universal Dispatch fix. If the PC is below the minimum, an upgrade may be necessary to meet the baseline; if it already meets it, complete the software checks and document the failure before spending money.

A larger drive can help only when the 15 GB installation requirement cannot be met. More memory or a newer graphics card may change performance on a system below the recommended row, but neither is a guaranteed cure for a game bug, an overlay conflict, a subtitle-animation memory leak, or a Steam Deck compatibility issue. Keep the original configuration available when testing so you can describe what changed.

How do I disable Steam, Discord, or NVIDIA overlays?

Overlays inject an additional layer into the game’s rendering or input path. AdHoc Studio recommends disabling them as a reversible diagnostic test for visual performance problems. Disable them before changing several graphics options; otherwise you will not know whether the overlay or another setting made the difference.

  1. Disable Steam Overlay. In Steam Library, right-click Dispatch, select Properties, choose General, and turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
  2. Disable Discord’s game overlay. In Discord, open User Settings, select Game Overlay, and turn off the in-game overlay, or disable it for Dispatch if Discord offers a per-game switch.
  3. Disable NVIDIA GeForce overlay features. Open the NVIDIA app or GeForce Experience settings and turn off the in-game overlay.
  4. Restart Dispatch and repeat the same scene. Compare the result with the overlay state you used previously. If the symptom disappears, re-enable one overlay at a time to identify which change matters.

You can disable all three for a clean comparison, or change them individually to identify a conflict. The official wording is: “Disabling game overlays like Steam, Discord, or NVIDIA GeForce can also help.” That identifies a useful test, not a confirmed cause for every crash or stutter. A successful overlay test does not mean you must permanently give up an overlay; it shows which configuration to report and which feature to leave off while waiting for support.

Can subtitle animation cause a crash or memory problem?

It can be a developer-identified source of memory leaks, so turn it off temporarily when crashes or escalating stutter occur during dialogue-heavy scenes. AdHoc Studio states: “You can also try disabling subtitle animation as this can cause memory leaks.” The statement describes a possible source, not a diagnosis of every crash.

  1. Open Dispatch’s in-game Settings menu.
  2. Find the subtitle or accessibility section and turn Subtitle Animation off.
  3. Apply the change, fully exit the game, and launch it again. A complete restart makes the comparison clearer than leaving a long-running session open.
  4. Replay the scene or use the same sequence that previously failed. Note whether the failure occurs immediately, later in the session, or not at all.

This test is especially informative when performance worsens over a longer session or when a repeatable dialogue scene triggers the failure. If the game becomes stable, report that exact before-and-after behavior; do not describe it as proof that the memory leak is the only fault. If nothing changes, restore the setting if you prefer it and continue to the other official checks.

How do I fix screen tearing or black frames?

Restore VSync if it was disabled. The developer FAQ says VSync is enabled automatically, but a player can turn it off; the FAQ also recommends restoring it when tearing or black frames appear. Check this setting when the game is running but the image is split, intermittently black, or fails to redraw after a transition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Dispatch’s Settings and then Graphics or Display.
  2. Set VSync to On.
  3. Apply the setting and restart the game if the display does not redraw correctly.
  4. Check the same display mode and scene again. Record whether the issue occurs only after changing resolution, window mode, or monitor.

VSync addresses synchronization symptoms. It is not a replacement for a current driver or sufficient hardware, and it should not be presented as a universal fix for crashes. If VSync was already on, leave it unchanged and move to the overlay or driver tests instead of toggling it repeatedly.

What should I do when Dispatch will not launch on Steam Deck?

Use the official Steam Deck path: update the device on the Stable channel, then force Proton 9.0-4 or the latest compatibility tool bundled with Steam. The exact setting is reversible, and the FAQ does not establish that Proton 9.0-4 is permanently the best choice.

  1. Open Steam on the Deck and go to Settings > System.
  2. Install the available system update and select the Stable system update channel. Restart the Deck if Steam requests it.
  3. Open your Library, highlight Dispatch, press the menu button, and choose Properties.
  4. Select Compatibility.
  5. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  6. Choose Proton 9.0-4, or choose the latest compatibility tool bundled with Steam when that is the available official option.
  7. Close Properties and launch Dispatch again. If the symptom changes, record which tool was selected and whether the game reached the menu.

These instructions are for launch failures on Steam Deck. They do not prove that every Deck crash is caused by Proton, and they should not be generalized to Windows installations. If a newer bundled tool is offered, test it as the FAQ allows instead of assuming the older version must remain selected forever. If the game starts but later freezes, document the scene and whether audio or controls continue; a launch fix and a runtime fix are not necessarily the same.

How can I tell a launch error from a runtime freeze?

A launch error occurs before the title screen or before the game creates a usable window. A runtime crash closes the game after it has started, often at a repeatable scene or loading transition. A freeze may leave the window visible while input stops responding; if audio continues, the process may not have closed completely. These descriptions help support distinguish symptoms, but they do not identify the underlying fault by themselves.

  • Before the menu: prioritize updates, requirements, graphics drivers, and the Steam Deck compatibility procedure where applicable.
  • During a dialogue scene: test subtitle animation, then replay the same scene.
  • After a long session: note whether stutter increases over time and test subtitle animation without changing several other variables.
  • Image frozen with audio: record how long audio continues, whether keyboard or Deck controls respond, and whether the game eventually closes.
  • Black frames or tearing: restore VSync and repeat the same display-mode test.

Which test matches my Dispatch symptom?

Use the symptom as a routing tool, then apply the least disruptive test first. Official recommendations carry more weight than anecdotal reports, so community descriptions should help you describe a failure rather than establish its cause.

Symptom Platform First reversible test Evidence and next step
Crash before the menu Windows PC Update Dispatch, Windows, and the graphics driver; check minimum specs Official developer guidance. If it persists, disable overlays and report the exact launch point.
Crash during a dialogue scene Windows PC Disable subtitle animation and replay the scene Official FAQ identifies subtitle animation as a possible memory-leak source.
Gradually worsening stutter Windows PC Disable subtitle animation, then overlays, changing one variable at a time Both are official diagnostic suggestions; neither proves the cause without reproduction.
Freeze while audio continues Windows PC or Steam Deck Note whether the process remains responsive, then apply the platform’s update and compatibility steps Audio continuing is useful evidence for support, not confirmation of a specific fault.
Black frames or tearing Windows PC Restore VSync and retest the same display mode Official FAQ links VSync to these display symptoms.
Nothing happens after pressing Play Steam Deck Update on Stable, then force Proton 9.0-4 or the latest bundled tool Official Steam Deck procedure. Escalate if the launch failure remains.

Keep the table’s platform distinction in mind. A Windows driver update is not a substitute for updating SteamOS on a Deck, and a Proton change is not a Windows launch setting. Likewise, VSync and overlays are reversible display tests, while hardware requirements are a baseline check rather than a setting to toggle.

What mistakes make troubleshooting harder?

  • Changing everything at once. A driver update, overlay change, VSync change, and subtitle toggle made together cannot reveal which variable mattered.
  • Repeating a different scene each time. Use the same save and sequence when possible so the comparison is meaningful.
  • Treating minimum specs as a performance guarantee. The minimum row only says that the machine meets the listed baseline; it does not promise a fixed frame rate or immunity from bugs.
  • Assuming a community workaround is confirmed. Reader reports can describe useful symptoms, but the official FAQ is the basis for the driver, overlay, subtitle-animation, VSync, and Steam Deck recommendations.
  • Leaving a new compatibility tool undocumented. On Deck, write down whether Proton 9.0-4 or the latest bundled tool was selected.
  • Reinstalling the operating system prematurely. A full Windows reinstall is not part of the official sequence and can erase useful information before you report the issue.

How should I document a failure before contacting support?

Send persistent problems through AdHoc Studio’s official Dispatch bug-report route or the support email shown in its developer FAQ. A concise, reproducible report is more useful than a list of speculative fixes. The FAQ confirms the reporting route; the following details make the report easier to investigate.

Include these details where applicable:

  • Platform: Windows PC or Steam Deck.
  • Operating system or SteamOS channel.
  • CPU, GPU, and installed RAM for a PC.
  • Dispatch version, including whether Steam downloaded an update immediately before the problem.
  • The exact point of failure: launch, menu, named scene, loading transition, or exit.
  • Whether the image freezes while audio continues, whether the game closes, and whether a restart changes the symptom.
  • Whether overlays were enabled, subtitle animation was enabled, and the VSync state.
  • On Steam Deck, the selected compatibility tool.
  • The steps already attempted and what changed after each one.

A useful report can follow this order: “Platform and specifications; game version; exact reproduction steps; expected result; observed result; audio and input behavior; settings changed; and whether the issue remains after restarting.” Include the same scene or save name when one is involved. Do not claim that a community workaround is an established cause. State what happened, what hardware or platform was involved, and whether the same sequence reproduces the issue.

Does the October 2026 Dispatch patch change this troubleshooting advice?

AdHoc Studio’s October 22, 2026 patch lists version 1.0.19512 and adds Deluxe Edition Commentary and Storyboard modes. The published notes do not describe that update as a universal crash, launch, or stutter fix.

Install the current Steam build before diagnosing, but keep a symptom-specific report if the problem remains after updating. A new version can change behavior without identifying the underlying cause of a particular machine’s failure. If the update itself appears to precede the issue, include that timing in the report rather than assuming the patch caused it.

When should I stop changing settings?

Stop after the update, requirements, overlay, subtitle-animation, VSync, and applicable Steam Deck checks have been tried and documented. Repeatedly changing several settings at once makes the result harder to interpret and can hide the original configuration.

At that point, use the official bug-report form or support email. The escalation is appropriate even when the game launches intermittently, because the exact reproduction conditions and version information can help the developer investigate a fault that a local toggle cannot resolve. Preserve your notes, including which tests had no effect; negative results are useful and prevent support from sending you through the same steps again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dispatch officially verified for Steam Deck?

The available developer guidance provides a SteamOS update and Proton procedure, but it does not establish a blanket Verified or Playable status for every Steam Deck model and SteamOS build. Treat the compatibility steps as troubleshooting instructions rather than a certification claim.

Should I keep Proton 9.0-4 selected forever?

No. Proton 9.0-4 is one option named by the FAQ, while the same guidance allows the latest compatibility tool bundled with Steam. If a newer bundled tool changes the result, record that version in any support report.

Why can I still hear audio when the picture freezes?

Continuing audio suggests the game process may not have closed completely, but it does not identify whether the problem is rendering, memory, a driver, or compatibility. Tell support exactly how long audio continued and whether keyboard or Deck controls still responded.

Should I reinstall Windows before reporting a Dispatch crash?

A full operating-system reinstall is not part of the official Dispatch troubleshooting sequence. Complete the documented updates and reversible settings checks first, then report the failure with your hardware, version, symptom, and attempted steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do the minimum requirements guarantee smooth performance?

No. The minimum listing identifies a baseline for Windows 10 64-bit or later, the listed processor and graphics hardware, 2 GB of RAM, DirectX 11, and 15 GB of storage. Meeting it does not guarantee a fixed frame rate or eliminate bugs, drivers, overlays, or scene-specific problems.

Should I disable every overlay permanently?

Not necessarily. Disable Steam, Discord, and NVIDIA GeForce overlays as a reversible comparison, then repeat the same scene. If one change matters, you can leave that overlay off while testing or re-enable features one at a time and report the result.

What if subtitle animation does not change anything?

Restore the setting if you prefer it and continue with the driver, overlay, VSync, requirements, and platform-specific checks. The FAQ identifies subtitle animation as a possible memory-leak source, not as the explanation for every crash or stutter.

Is Proton 9.0-4 a Windows fix?

No. Proton is part of the Steam Deck compatibility procedure. Windows players should follow the Windows update, requirements, graphics-driver, overlay, subtitle-animation, and VSync checks instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a new GPU or SSD required?

Only consider hardware changes when the PC is below the published baseline or cannot provide the required 15 GB of available storage. The official guidance does not identify a particular product as a universal fix for Dispatch crashes, launch errors, or stuttering.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Update Dispatch, Windows or SteamOS, and the graphics driver first; compare your PC with the published requirements; disable overlays and subtitle animation as reversible tests; restore VSync for tearing or black frames; and use Stable SteamOS plus Proton 9.0-4 or the latest bundled tool for Steam Deck launch failures. If the same symptom remains, send AdHoc Studio a detailed report instead of guessing at a permanent fix.
