Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchExact error: “The program can’t start because dlaa1res.dll is missing from your computer.”
A dlaa1res.dll error usually points to an older Lexmark printer or scanner component, not a missing Windows system file. The safest repair is to identify the Lexmark device and reinstall its matching printer/scanner package instead of downloading the DLL separately.

Which fix applies to you
Use this checklist before changing anything:
- The error appears when opening Lexmark scanning software: repair or reinstall the Lexmark package for the connected printer or multifunction device.
- The error started after removing, updating, or replacing a printer: install the correct driver package again and remove stale software only after identifying the active device.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history, but reinstall from Lexmark rather than restoring an unverified DLL.
- The error began after a Windows update or failed installation: install pending updates, restart, then repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- The message appears in a non-Lexmark program: identify the exact executable first. An old startup entry, backup remnant, or unwanted software may be calling a leftover Lexmark component.
- No Lexmark printer or scanner has ever been installed: do not install
dlaa1res.dll. Check startup entries, scheduled tasks, installed applications, and Windows Security instead.
What is dlaa1res.dll
Public file metadata describes dlaa1res.dll as Local Scan Resource and associates it with Lexmark International, Inc. The available evidence points to an older Lexmark local-scan component used by printer or multifunction-device software.
That does not prove a particular Lexmark model contains the file. The exact product association, release details, signing status, and complete dependency list are not established in current official documentation.

dlaa1res.dll is not established as:
- An inbox Windows system DLL
- A Microsoft-authored component
- A Visual C++ runtime file
- A DirectX file
- A .NET component
Some error pages may show generic messages such as “module not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “the procedure entry point could not be located.” These messages can mean the named DLL is missing, damaged, incompatible, blocked, or unable to load one of its dependencies.
Fix 1: Reinstall the matching Lexmark package
This is the most likely fix when the affected computer has a Lexmark printer, scanner, or multifunction device.
Identify the device and calling program
- Look at the printer or scanner label for its exact model name.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Note every Lexmark device listed.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Lexmark, Scan Center, printer software, or scan utilities.
- Try to reproduce the error and note which program displays it.
Do not choose a driver solely because its name resembles the printer model. Lexmark devices can have separate print, scan, network-scan, and common-utilities packages.

Download and install from Lexmark
- Open Lexmark’s official Drivers & downloads page.
- Search for the exact printer or multifunction-device model.
- Select your Windows version and system architecture when requested.
- Download the printer/scanner software package recommended for that model.
- Close Lexmark scanning and printing programs.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Choose Repair if the installer offers it. Otherwise choose the normal installation option.
- Connect the device only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open the Lexmark scanning application and test a scan.
The package must match the model and supported Windows version. A 32-bit legacy scan component may still be required by a 32-bit application, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
If the installer refuses to run, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the old Lexmark software, and choose Uninstall if available. Restart, then run the correct package again. Remove old printer packages only when you have confirmed they are not needed by another Lexmark device.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through driver versions and guessing which device package is stale; its free scan identifies driver issues, while repair or driver installation requires the full version. For this file, the exact Lexmark model package remains the definitive source.
How to tell it worked: the error no longer appears, the Lexmark application opens, and Windows can print or scan from the intended device.

Fix 2: Repair the installed Lexmark application
If the error occurs only when opening one Lexmark program, Windows may be able to repair that application without a full reinstall.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the Lexmark application named in the error or associated with the scanner.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair if the button is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same screen and choose Uninstall. Then install the current package for the exact Lexmark model from Lexmark’s official download page.
Do not repair a random application just because it appears near the error. Use the executable named in the message, Task Manager, or the Lexmark software list to establish which program is involved.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a driver resource after an update, cleanup operation, or reputation check.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events for a Lexmark file or the path associated with
dlaa1res.dll. - Expand the event and inspect the original location and detection details.
- If the file is clearly inside a legitimate Lexmark installation directory, verify the package by reinstalling it from Lexmark.
- Restore the file only when you have confirmed its path, publisher, and installation context.
Do not restore a file merely because its filename matches. A copied or counterfeit DLL can be malicious, unsigned, incompatible, or placed where another program can load it.
Windows Security’s Protection history does not retain events indefinitely. If the quarantine event is no longer available, reinstall the official Lexmark package rather than trying to recover the isolated file manually.

Fix 4: Install updates and repair Windows components
DISM and System File Checker are useful when Windows servicing or a driver installation has become damaged. They are not guaranteed to restore a third-party Lexmark DLL.
Install pending updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, including when no update asks for a restart.
- Test the Lexmark program again.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands finish.
- Test the affected Lexmark application.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or could not repair everything. A successful Windows repair does not prove that dlaa1res.dll was restored. If the error remains, return to the Lexmark package reinstall.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process less repetitive by showing what system problems its free scan detects; the repair itself requires the full version, and it should not replace reinstalling the Lexmark package that owns the missing component.
Fix 5: Check architecture and driver registration
A 32-bit program can require a 32-bit Lexmark DLL on 64-bit Windows. Do not assume that installing a 64-bit driver replaces every older 32-bit scan component.
Check the Windows architecture
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Look at System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check the Lexmark installer notes for the supported architecture.
- Install the package intended for the exact printer model and application.
A file located in System32 is not automatically a Windows component. Do not copy dlaa1res.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Windows uses different file-system redirection and DLL search rules, and an arbitrary copy can create loading or security problems.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Lexmark device or a warning icon.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Read the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab to review the provider and installed driver.
- Use Update Driver only with a package downloaded for the exact device, or reinstall through Lexmark’s installer.
Do not use regsvr32 dlaa1res.dll as a general repair. Microsoft’s regsvr32 tool is intended for self-registering OLE controls and ActiveX components. A normal scan-resource DLL may not export DllRegisterServer, so registration can produce another error without repairing the original problem.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after removing Lexmark software, installing a driver, or applying another major system change.

rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if offered.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the software and drivers that will change.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a correct Lexmark package permanently. After Windows returns, confirm that the printer and scanner work, then install the supported Lexmark software if necessary.

Do not download an isolated dlaa1res.dll file from a random DLL site. The file may contain malware, belong to a different Lexmark release, use the wrong architecture, lack a valid signature, or fail because a related dependency is also missing.
Do not:
- Copy the DLL into
System32orSysWOW64 - Replace a signed driver file with an unknown copy
- Run
regsvr32unless Lexmark’s installer specifically requires it - Install Visual C++ Redistributable just because this DLL is missing
- Delete every Lexmark driver package without checking connected devices
- Assume SFC will restore a third-party application file
Install Visual C++ Redistributable only when the actual error names a Visual C++ runtime DLL, such as a file beginning with MSVCP or VCRUNTIME. That is a different problem from dlaa1res.dll.

If the error still appears
Collect these details before repeating repairs:
- Exact Lexmark printer or multifunction-device model
- The full error text
- The program or executable displaying it
- Windows edition, version, and system type
- Whether the error appears at startup or only during scanning
- The full path of
dlaa1res.dll, if shown - Recent antivirus, Windows, driver, or cleanup events
- Any Event Viewer application error
Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows + X, selecting Event Viewer, and checking Windows Logs > Application for an entry at the time of the failure.
If no Lexmark hardware or software has ever been installed, investigate Task Manager > Startup apps, Task Scheduler, and installed applications. A leftover startup entry or unwanted program may be calling an obsolete component. Run a full Windows Security scan rather than adding the DLL manually.
FAQ
Is dlaa1res.dll a Windows file?
It is not established as an inbox Windows DLL. Public metadata associates it with an older Lexmark local-scan component.

Which Lexmark printer uses it?
No authoritative public record identifies one exact model. Search Lexmark’s official driver portal using the model printed on the device and install its matching package.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Not normally. There is no evidence that dlaa1res.dll is a Visual C++ runtime file. Install a runtime only when the error names an actual runtime DLL.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually no. A scan-resource DLL is not automatically a self-registering component. Reinstall the Lexmark software instead.
Can SFC restore the file?
SFC repairs protected Windows components. It may not restore a third-party Lexmark file. Reinstalling the correct Lexmark package is the direct repair.
Why does the message say “module could not be found” when the DLL exists?
The named file may be present while one of its dependencies is missing, blocked, corrupted, or incompatible. Check the package, architecture, antivirus history, and calling application rather than copying another DLL.
