dmrc.dll Missing: Diagnose and Repair the Windows Component

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

dmrc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, and dmrc.dll errors usually point to damaged system files, quarantine, servicing problems, or an outdated program. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL from a random website.

What dmrc.dll does

DMRC means Device Metadata Retrieval Client. Windows uses this component to match hardware with device-metadata packages, especially for Devices and Printers. It checks local metadata and may contact Microsoft’s metadata service when a device is installed or updated. Microsoft documents the component in its Device Metadata Retrieval Client documentation.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The device-metadata system is deprecated and is being replaced by Driver Package Container Metadata. Therefore, a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation may not use dmrc.dll in exactly the same way as a Windows 7-era installation.

Version identification

Item What is known
File dmrc.dll
Component Windows Device Metadata Retrieval Client
Common description Windows MRC
Reported version 6.1.7600.16385
Version context Associated with Windows 7-era builds, not a universal current version
Architecture Public records mention both 32-bit and 64-bit variants, but they are not an authoritative Microsoft package manifest
Normal role Protected Windows component, not Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game runtime

The reported 6.1.7600.16385 version should be treated as Windows 7-era reference information. Do not assume that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer should contain that exact version.

What the error message means

You may see wording such as:

  • “The program can’t start because dmrc.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “dmrc.dll was not found.”
  • “dmrc.dll could not be located.”
  • “dmrc.dll could not be loaded.”
  • “dmrc.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “Cannot register dmrc.dll.”

These are loader messages, not diagnoses. The same wording can result from a missing file, corruption, a wrong architecture, a damaged Windows component store, quarantine, or an application that is making an obsolete request.

Note when the error appears:

  • At Windows startup: suspect system damage, a startup entry, or security software activity.
  • While opening Devices and Printers: suspect Windows servicing or device-metadata problems.
  • Only when opening one older program: investigate that program, its architecture, and its installer.
  • Immediately after Windows Update, cleanup, malware removal, or manual deletion: focus on the recent change first.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest first repair because dmrc.dll is a Windows component. DISM repairs the Windows image, while System File Checker replaces damaged protected files. Microsoft explains this process in its guide to using SFC to repair missing or corrupted system files.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter and wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Read the final result.

A successful result normally says that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it could not find source files, install pending Windows updates and restart. You can also use a matching Windows installation source with the /Source and /LimitAccess options described in Microsoft’s Windows image repair documentation. Do not guess at a source path from a different Windows build.

Run SFC

After DISM completes, enter:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows files appear intact. Continue with the quarantine, update, and application checks below.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and test the operation that produced the error.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Restart, run DISM again, run SFC again, and inspect the detailed log.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: Restart and retry from an elevated Command Prompt.

To extract the relevant SFC entries to a desktop file, run:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"

Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop. If DISM and SFC still cannot repair the component, continue to the recovery options later in this guide.

If repeatedly hunting through CBS logs and rerunning DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the specific problems; its free scan shows what is wrong, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate repair path for dmrc.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine a Windows file, and malware remediation may remove or alter system components. A missing file is not automatically malware, and a quarantine entry is not automatically safe to restore.

Check Windows Security

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Choose Privacy & security.
  3. Select Windows Security.
  4. Open Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an entry involving dmrc.dll, Windows system files, or a recent malware-removal action.
  7. Expand the entry and review its path and detection details.

Only restore or allow the file when you have established that the item is genuine. Microsoft describes these actions in its Protection History guidance.

If you restore a file:

  1. Run a full scan in Windows Security.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Run DISM and SFC again.
  4. Test the affected operation.

If the file was removed during malware cleanup, do not copy a replacement from another computer. Let Windows servicing restore the protected component.

Fix 3: Install pending Windows updates

An incomplete update can leave the component store inconsistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install every applicable update.
  5. Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.
  7. Run DISM followed by SFC once more.

Microsoft also recommends DISM and SFC when repairing Windows Update corruption.

If the problem began immediately after an update and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore may be appropriate. Open Start, type recovery, select Recovery, choose Open System Restore, select a restore point from before the failure, and follow the wizard. System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs while leaving personal files intact. Microsoft explains this in its System Restore documentation.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

On 64-bit Windows, C:WindowsSystem32 normally contains native 64-bit system files, while C:WindowsSysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files through WOW64 redirection. The names are confusing, so do not use the folder name alone to decide which copy is correct. Microsoft documents this behavior in its File System Redirector reference.

A 32-bit legacy application may be requesting a 32-bit component, while a 64-bit process may be requesting the native version. To investigate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the program named in the error.
  2. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  3. Select Details.
  4. Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
  5. Add Platform if your Windows version provides it.
  6. Note whether the failing executable is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  7. Do not copy files between System32 and SysWOW64.
  8. Repair Windows or reinstall the affected application using an installer that matches the system and application architecture.

If a program fails only on one computer, compare its installed version and architecture with a supported installer from the program’s original vendor. The error does not prove that dmrc.dll belongs in that program’s folder.

Fix 5: Repair the affected application

If the error appears only when launching one old application, the application may be using an obsolete Windows interface or have an incomplete installation.

First try Windows’ repair option:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart the program and test it.

If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its original official installer. Back up application data first. For games, use the launcher’s Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or equivalent command before reinstalling.

Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will fix dmrc.dll. Microsoft identifies DMRC as a Windows device-metadata component, not one of those runtimes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Update device drivers when the failure involves hardware

If the error appears while installing a device or opening Devices and Printers, install drivers from the computer, device, or motherboard manufacturer.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the affected device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. If Windows finds nothing, visit the device manufacturer’s official support page and install the driver for the exact model and Windows architecture.
  9. In Device Manager, select View and then Show hidden devices to check for stale entries.
  10. Do not delete an unfamiliar device unless you know which hardware it represents.

Driver hunting can involve comparing hardware models and versions across many manufacturer pages. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are outdated in its free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source.

Verify the file’s location and signature

A file in C:WindowsSystem32 is not automatically trustworthy, and an unexpected copy in an application directory deserves investigation.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the location reported by the error or application.
  3. Right-click dmrc.dll.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. On the General tab, check the full location.
  6. Open the Details tab and review the description, company, and file version.
  7. Open Digital Signatures.
  8. Select the signature and choose Details.
  9. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Microsoft Corporation.

If the file has no valid Microsoft signature, appears in a temporary or download folder, or has an unexpected name, do not register or replace it manually. Run a malware scan and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.

What not to do

Do not download dmrc.dll from a DLL archive

Random DLL downloads can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the component store. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can create a second problem without repairing the original cause.

There is no verified official standalone Microsoft dmrc.dll download package. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or a Microsoft repair installation instead.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing file or repair an ordinary Windows system library. Microsoft documents its purpose in the regsvr32 command reference.

Do not run:

regsvr32 dmrc.dll

unless diagnostic evidence shows that a specific application requires COM registration and the file explicitly provides the required registration function. Nothing established about dmrc.dll makes that a normal repair step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not toggle Windows Features randomly

Opening Turn Windows features on or off and enabling unrelated components does not restore DMRC. Use Windows Features only when a particular application’s documentation identifies a required feature, and enable the exact feature named there.

When to use a repair installation or clean installation

Escalate when all of these are true:

  • DISM cannot repair the image.
  • SFC continues to report unrepaired files.
  • Windows Update repair does not resolve the issue.
  • The file has a valid expected location and signature, or Windows cannot restore it.
  • The problem affects more than one application or Windows function.

Back up personal files first. An in-place Windows repair can preserve personal files and applications when supported by the installation media. A clean installation is more disruptive and should be reserved for unrecoverable system damage or a confirmed malware compromise.

If the computer still runs Windows 7, remember that it is unsupported and carries migration risk. Moving to a supported Windows installation is safer than trying to preserve a Windows 7-era component indefinitely.

FAQ

Is dmrc.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. DMRC is Microsoft’s Device Metadata Retrieval Client, a Windows component associated particularly with device metadata and Devices and Printers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer contain dmrc.dll?

Do not assume so. The component is deprecated, and the reported 6.1.7600.16385 version is associated with Windows 7-era records rather than being a universal current version.

Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not as the first response. dmrc.dll is documented as a Windows component, not one of those runtimes.

Is a missing dmrc.dll proof of malware?

No. Damage, quarantine, failed servicing, manual deletion, and outdated software can all produce the error. Verify the file’s location and signature, scan the system, and use Windows repair tools.

What if the error appears only in one legacy program?

Repair or reinstall that program from its original official source after completing the Windows checks. A program-specific failure does not prove that the DLL should be copied into the program folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if DISM and SFC cannot fix it?

Install pending updates, inspect the SFC log, check disk and malware conditions, try System Restore, and consider an in-place repair installation. Back up data before major recovery work.
