msauddecmft.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Media Foundation component used by audio decoders, including AAC and Dolby decoders. If Windows says it is missing, cannot load it, or cannot find a required module, repair Windows media components rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The safest repair is to install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by System File Checker. Windows N editions may also need the official Media Feature Pack.

On a standard Windows installation, the normal location is:
C:WindowsSystem32MSAudDecMFT.dll
A media player, browser, game, video editor, remote-desktop session, or another program may report the error when it asks Windows Media Foundation to decode audio. That does not mean one particular application is always responsible.

What the error means
Reported messages can include:
- “The program can’t start because msauddecmft.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because msauddecmft.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting msauddecmft.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “msauddecmft.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are common reported variants, not guaranteed wording for every Windows version.
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of msauddecmft.dll is missing. The named DLL may exist while another required Windows component, media package, or application dependency does not.
Before repairing, check the basics
1. Check whether the file exists
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- Open the Windows drive, usually Local Disk (C:).
- Open
WindowsSystem32. - Search for
MSAudDecMFT.dll.
Do not copy the file into an application folder if it is missing. Its component-store ownership and dependencies must also be repaired.
2. Check your Windows edition
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look beside Windows specifications.
- Check the Edition entry.
If it contains N or KN, continue to the Media Feature Pack section below. Specially stripped-down, customized, and some IoT images can also omit media packages.
3. Check the signature and location
Right-click the file in System32, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. A normal system copy should have a valid Microsoft signature.
Treat these conditions as suspicious:
- The file is outside the Windows system directories.
- The signature is missing or invalid.
- The file has an unexpected publisher.
- Security software recently detected or quarantined it.
Do not replace a suspicious file with another download. Run a security scan and repair Windows from an official source.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and repair system files
This is the correct first repair when the component is missing, corrupted, or damaged by an incomplete update.
Install pending updates
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer if Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no important updates remain.
- Test the affected program.
If the error remains, run DISM and SFC.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component source that SFC uses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart and test. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, the problem may involve a missing dependency, Windows edition, application installation, or user profile.
If the manual DISM and SFC process leaves you repeatedly hunting through repair messages without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; its repair functions are handled by the full version, and it is optional rather than required.
Fix 2: Install Media Feature Pack on Windows N or KN
Windows N editions exclude some media functionality until the Media Feature Pack is installed.
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Select View features or Add an optional feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and choose Next.
- Select Install.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Run Windows Update again.
- Test the program that reported the error.
If the Media Feature Pack does not appear, confirm the edition and installed Windows build. The available package can depend on the exact Windows release. Microsoft also notes that some media functions may require Microsoft Store media extensions after the pack is installed.
If you use a customized Windows image or an IoT installation, media packages such as Microsoft Media Foundation may have been removed. Restore them through the image’s supported servicing process rather than copying a DLL manually.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may have quarantined or deleted a valid system file, although a suspicious file should not be restored merely because an application requests it.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection associated with
MSAudDecMFT.dll. - Check the file path, detection details, and signature before taking action.
Restore the file only when you have verified that it is the genuine Microsoft-signed copy and the detection is a false positive. Otherwise leave it quarantined, update Windows Security, and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
If malware may be involved, run a full scan before restoring anything.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit version of Windows can run both 64-bit system components and 32-bit applications through WOW64. The correct dependency set depends on the Windows component and the calling process, not simply on whether the computer has a 64-bit processor.
Do not download a 32-bit or 64-bit copy based on guesswork. Do not replace the Windows copy with a file taken from another computer.
A 32-bit application may use different loader paths and dependencies. If only one older program fails, repairing or reinstalling that program is more appropriate than changing files in System32.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the evidence points to audio hardware
Driver reinstallation is not the primary fix for MSAudDecMFT.dll. Consider it only when the error occurs with an audio-device problem, an OEM media stack, or a recent device change.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo check the audio driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the application.
If the problem began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when available. Use the computer or audio-device manufacturer’s official support channel for a model-specific driver.
If manually identifying which of several drivers is stale is taking longer than the repair itself, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; driver installation through the full version is optional, and it is not a substitute for repairing Windows when the media component is corrupted.
Fix 7: Roll back a recent Windows change
If the error began immediately after an update or incomplete upgrade, first complete Windows Update and run DISM and SFC. If that does not help, an update rollback can be a diagnostic step.
Uninstall a recent update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Update history.
- Select Uninstall updates.
- Select the relevant recent update.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart and test.
Do not treat update removal as a permanent solution. Reapply the update when Microsoft provides a corrected installation, and consider the security impact of leaving an update removed.
Use System Restore
If restore points are enabled:
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Follow the prompts and restart.
System Restore does not replace personal backups and may not be available on every system.
Fix 8: Use an in-place repair when servicing fails
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, or Windows repeatedly reports that the repair source is unavailable, use matching Windows installation media.
A repair source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and build closely enough to be valid. Back up important files first.
An in-place repair can reinstall Windows while preserving applications and personal files where supported. Use Microsoft’s official installation-media instructions and choose the option that preserves apps and files. If Windows cannot boot or the installation is severely damaged, use Windows Recovery Environment and consider professional assistance before selecting a clean installation.

What not to do
- Do not download
msauddecmft.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy an unknown DLL into
System32or beside the application. - Do not choose a file only because its name, size, or version looks similar.
- Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET as a default response to this Windows media error.
- Do not blindly run
regsvr32 msauddecmft.dll. - Do not assume that a failed
regsvr32command proves the file is missing. - Do not replace a 64-bit system file with a 32-bit download.
- Do not disable security software simply to make an application launch.
MSAudDecMFT.dll is a Media Foundation Transform. Its registration is handled through Media Foundation and component servicing, not by treating every DLL as an ordinary ActiveX control.
FAQ
Is msauddecmft.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Windows Media Foundation audio-decoder component normally supplied and serviced by Windows.
Should I copy it into the game folder?
Usually no. Repair Windows first. If only one game fails, use the launcher’s repair function or reinstall the game from its official installer.
Why does the message say the module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, damaged, incompatible, or blocked. The message does not prove that the named DLL itself is absent.
Do I need both 32-bit and 64-bit versions?
Do not install versions manually. Windows and the calling application determine the required architecture.
Does Windows N require extra steps?
Often, yes. Install the Media Feature Pack through Settings > Apps > Optional features and restart.
What if DISM and SFC find no problem?
Check the application installation, Windows edition, security quarantine history, dependencies, event logs, disk health, and another user profile. If every media application fails, escalate to Windows recovery or an in-place repair.
