DMZ Early Access is listed as starting October 20 for the Modern Warfare 4 editions shown on the publisher’s page. The mode drops you into Hajin alone or with a squad to pursue objectives, fight AI forces and rival Operators, gather resources, and choose when to extract. The central trade-off is simple: push farther for the chance of greater rewards, or leave with what you have before the danger catches up.

When does DMZ Early Access start?

The official Modern Warfare 4 DMZ page lists DMZ Early Access as starting October 20. The page was accessed on October 20, 2026, so this date is presented here in that context; check the publisher’s current product page for the latest availability and edition details. The same page lists Campaign Early Access as starting October 16. Those are separate dates for the named access periods, not a promise that every edition or platform has identical availability.

The publisher describes DMZ as “the definitive Call of Duty extraction experience, a living combat sandbox where every deployment is a new story.” In practical terms, it is an extraction shooter: you enter a contested zone, pursue your own objectives, collect gear and resources, and try to get out before you are killed or choose to take on more risk.

What is DMZ, and what happens in a deployment?

A deployment is a self-directed operation in a shared combat zone. You can focus on story progression, objective completion, hunting valuable targets, collecting resources, fighting other players, or simply exploring. These goals can overlap: an objective may take you through a dangerous area, while the route to a reward can expose you to AI forces or rival Operators.

DMZ is PvPvE, meaning both human opponents and hostile AI forces are part of the threat. That changes the feel of a match from a straightforward mission: a firefight with AI can give away your position, other Operators may contest the same area, and the value of your current haul can make withdrawal more attractive than another fight. You decide how much of that risk to accept.

What map is DMZ on?

The current exclusion zone is Hajin. The official Modern Warfare 4 description highlights four major locations and also points to secret or sealed spaces, traversal challenges, and entrances accessible only through water.

Hajin location What the official description establishes
Fallout reactor An irradiated area centered on a reactor.
Prison A highly secured complex.
Hajin City The remains of the city.
Military Base A heavily defended installation.

These descriptions establish the character of each place, not a complete map guide: the publisher’s summary does not specify exact routes, loot tables, enemy counts, or which entrances lead to particular areas. Its references to water-only entrances and sealed locations do indicate that route choice and exploration are part of the experience, rather than every objective being reached by a direct, exposed approach.

DMZ has used other exclusion zones in earlier versions. The original overview centered on Al Mazrah; a later official Season 04 update introduced Vondel. Those are historical examples, not the current map listing for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, which names Hajin.

What missions and activities can you choose?

The current mode offers several kinds of operation, so a deployment does not have to follow one fixed mission path. The available choices listed by the publisher are Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, high-value-target hunts, and Free Roam.

  • Story Missions: Pursue objectives that expand the Modern Warfare 4 story.
  • Dynamic Operations: Complete objectives made up of multiple steps.
  • Side Ops: Take on optional operations alongside the other activity types.
  • High-value-target hunts: Seek specific valuable targets, with the associated danger of engaging in the zone.
  • Free Roam: Set your own route and priorities instead of centering the deployment on a listed objective.

Choose based on what you want from the match and what you are willing to risk. Story progression and multi-step operations give you a goal to organize around; a hunt can draw you into confrontation; Free Roam leaves the route open for gathering, exploration, or opportunistic fights. The sources establish these broad activity types, but do not provide mission names, rewards, or detailed completion conditions.

Can you play DMZ solo, and how do squads work?

Yes. The official description says you can infiltrate Hajin alone or with a squad. Playing solo means you are making the same basic choices about objectives, risk, and extraction without squadmates; the available information does not specify separate solo matchmaking rules or a solo-only mode.

With a squad, teammates can coordinate objectives, movement, and whether to fight or withdraw. But the zone also contains rival human Operators, so another squad is not automatically an ally. The broader DMZ identity includes communication and negotiation as alternatives to direct combat, but the current Modern Warfare 4 page should be treated as the authority on current features; it does not confirm the exact negotiation tools or rules for this version.

The earlier DMZ implementation documented proximity chat and squad assimilation, which could let rival squads form a temporary larger team with friendly fire disabled. That historical feature helps explain why negotiation became associated with DMZ, but it should not be assumed to work the same way in Modern Warfare 4 without confirmation on the current page or in-game.

How do PvPvE and the Bounty system affect your choices?

AI enemies and human Operators create different kinds of pressure. Hostile AI can make movement or objective completion dangerous, while rival players may be pursuing their own goals, contesting the same target, or looking for an opportunity to take your gear. You can fight, try to move covertly, engage other Operators, attempt to negotiate, or leave the area.

The Bounty system adds a risk-and-reward choice around hunting players: pursuing an Operator raises notoriety and puts a price on that Operator’s head. That can make a successful hunt more consequential, but it also increases the stakes of being the target. The official summary does not specify bounty values, how notoriety is calculated, or the precise rewards, so those details should be checked in the game rather than inferred.

How does extraction work, and what happens if you die?

Extraction is the deployment’s key risk decision. The current page says you can leave with your gear and resources intact, or push farther into Hajin for greater rewards and greater danger. It does not lay out the current exfil interface or every death penalty, so the detailed mechanics documented in earlier DMZ material need to be kept separate from confirmed Modern Warfare 4 rules.

In the earlier official DMZ overview, players called an extraction helicopter at marked points. Activating an exfil revealed its location to other squads and attracted AI combatants; after marked exfils had been used, a final exfil appeared. That overview also said that dying removed nonpermanent items in a player’s backpack. These details illustrate the historical extraction loop, but the current page does not confirm that every step or penalty carries over unchanged.

The same earlier overview described a persistent Storage system for extracted cash, weapons, and other items. It distinguished between Contraband weapons, which could be permanently lost on death, and Weapon Blueprints, which were not permanently lost but became temporarily inaccessible. Treat those as rules from the older implementation—not a guarantee about the current game’s inventory system.

What is the DMZ Forward Operating Base?

The Forward Operating Base (FOB) is the staging and progression hub between deployments. The current page lists a 3D Printer crafting station, The Stash for storage, weapon purchasing, a firing range, bounty boards, and upgrade systems that unlock over time. It connects preparation before a run with the longer-term systems that give successful operations value beyond a single match.

The page does not specify the recipes, prices, unlock requirements, or storage limits for those facilities. Think of the FOB as a set of preparation and progression functions rather than assuming a particular item can be crafted or bought before you see its requirements in-game.

How does Operator progression work?

Modern Warfare 4 adds persistent Operator development. In the Active Duty menu, you maintain a roster of Operators; each has a persistent backpack, loadout, and progression. Missions award Trait Points, which can be invested in three Trait Trees focused on specializations that include combat, infiltration, looting, recovery, and resource gathering.

This creates a link between the objective you choose now and how you prepare future deployments: missions award points, and points let you develop an Operator’s specialization. The current description establishes that progression loop but does not publish the Trait Trees’ individual nodes, point costs, or exact effects. Those specifics are best verified in the Active Duty menu.

How should you decide whether to extract or keep going?

Use the value of your current haul and the risk of the next objective as the decision, rather than treating extraction as something to do only at the end. The publisher’s description explicitly frames deeper pushes as a chance at greater rewards with greater danger; there is no universally correct point to leave.

  1. Set a purpose before moving. Pick a mission type or a Free Roam priority so you know what would make the deployment worthwhile.
  2. Reassess after an objective or major fight. Consider whether the remaining goal is worth crossing more hostile ground or attracting attention.
  3. Account for your squad’s condition and coordination. A plan that works for a grouped team may be too exposed or difficult to execute alone.
  4. Compare the next potential reward with what you stand to lose. Current Modern Warfare 4 inventory penalties are not fully detailed on the official summary, so check the in-game rules before betting valuable items on another push.
  5. Leave when the additional risk no longer serves your goal. Continuing is a choice to trade a safer exit for a chance at more—not a requirement to finish every activity in one deployment.

What is confirmed for Modern Warfare 4, and what is historical?

Because DMZ has changed across versions, separating current statements from earlier mechanics prevents a common misunderstanding: a rule from the original mode is not automatically a rule in the new one.

Topic Current Modern Warfare 4 description Earlier official DMZ material
Exclusion zone Hajin, with the reactor, Prison, city remains, and Military Base named. Al Mazrah was the original setting; Season 04 later introduced Vondel.
Activities Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, high-value-target hunts, and Free Roam. Not needed to establish the current activity list.
Squad interaction Solo or squad deployment is stated; specific negotiation rules are not detailed on the current page. Proximity chat and temporary squad assimilation were documented in an earlier implementation.
Extraction and death Extract with gear and resources intact, or push deeper for greater rewards and danger. Marked exfils, helicopter calls, a final exfil, and backpack losses on death were described.
Persistent systems FOB facilities and persistent Operator rosters, loadouts, backpacks, and Trait progression are described. Storage, Contraband, and Weapon Blueprint loss behavior were described.

For access availability and features that may change, the publisher’s current Modern Warfare 4 DMZ page and the in-game menus are the relevant references. Historical mechanics are useful context, but they are not a substitute for current rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between DMZ Early Access and Campaign Early Access?

The publisher lists DMZ Early Access starting October 20 and Campaign Early Access starting October 16. The labels refer to access for different parts of Modern Warfare 4; confirm the edition’s current terms before purchasing.

How many Operators could deploy in Vondel?

Call of Duty’s 2023 Season 04 description said Vondel supported up to 18 Operators at a time: six squads of three. That figure applies to Vondel in that earlier DMZ update, not Hajin in Modern Warfare 4.

Can a Weapon Blueprint be permanently lost in the older DMZ rules?

The earlier official DMZ overview said Weapon Blueprints were not permanently lost when a player died, though they became temporarily inaccessible. That is a historical rule and does not establish the current Modern Warfare 4 penalty.
