The headline frames a familiar debate: is a focused 20–25-hour game preferable to a 100-hour one? But the original source, speaker and exact remarks behind the ex-PlayStation-boss claim could not be verified. The claim should therefore be treated as headline wording, not a confirmed quotation or established industry position. The underlying question is still worth considering: a game’s hours matter less than what it does with them.
What is verified about the ex-PlayStation boss claim?
The attribution remains unverified: the available searches did not identify the executive, the originating interview or article, its publication date, or the surrounding remarks. There is no verified exact quotation to attribute to a former PlayStation boss. That means the 20–25-hour preference should not be repeated as a confirmed statement from a named person.

Nor does the headline establish that players generally prefer shorter games. The two duration ranges describe the framing of the claim, not typical game lengths or the results of a player survey.
A separate example of a shorter design target
A 2008 VideoGamer report offers a related, but distinct, example. Hunter Smith, identified as executive producer of The Godfather II at EA’s Redwood Shores studio, said the team had moved away from a 50–80-hour target toward a 15–25-hour experience for players. Smith’s statement is not evidence for the unverified ex-PlayStation attribution, but it shows that debate about a shorter, more focused game has a history. (VideoGamer, 15 August 2008)

What does a game’s length actually measure?
A single runtime can obscure different kinds of play. The main story may take one amount of time, while side quests, optional areas, collectible hunts and replayable systems add considerably more. A 2008 WIRED interview with Blizzard executive vice president of game design Rob Pardo discusses Diablo as replayable, with duration shaped by how much optional content a player pursues. It is useful context for separating a main path from a game’s broader possibilities, not confirmation of the headline’s claim. (WIRED, 2008)
Two games with the same advertised or estimated hours may also feel very different. The relevant questions are whether the activities vary, whether the pacing holds up, and whether the player wants to keep going. A long runtime can come from meaningful optional play or from repetition; a short campaign can feel complete or leave a player wanting more.

When might a shorter or longer game suit you?
- A shorter, focused game: may suit a player who wants a contained story or a clear ending without committing to a large amount of optional play.
- A longer game: may suit someone who enjoys exploring, pursuing side content, or returning to a replayable game.
- Either length: is a poor fit if its hours feel like padding to you. Runtime alone cannot tell you whether the experience earns your time.
These are ways to think about personal fit, not evidence that one duration is objectively better. The available Reddit discussion includes individual comments expressing both a preference for several shorter games and the view that a 100-hour game should justify its time. Those comments illustrate differing tastes; they are not representative findings about players as a whole. (Reddit discussion)
