Yes. In EA SPORTS FC 26, you can save and load tactic codes in Ultimate Team and Career Mode, but using the same code does not make the two modes play the same. Ultimate Team uses Competitive gameplay; Career Mode defaults to Authentic gameplay and can switch between the two presets. Those presets tune match behavior differently, and Career also has Tactical Vision and Head Coach familiarity mechanics that affect how a tactic fits your team.
So a code is reusable, but its match feel and Career-specific context are not. EA’s gameplay notes were published July 22, 2025, and its Career Mode deep dive on August 1, 2025. The details below are for FC 26; annual editions and later updates may differ.

What a tactic code does—and what it does not do
EA says you can save tactic codes to your profile and use them in or between Ultimate Team and Career Mode. It also says FC 25 tactic codes are compatible with FC 26 and convert when applied. That makes codes useful for carrying a setup between modes or bringing a previous-edition setup forward.
The important distinction is between a saved tactical setup and the gameplay preset under which a match is played. A code can transfer a setup; it does not override the mode’s gameplay tuning. Ultimate Team still uses Competitive gameplay, while Career defaults to Authentic. The same formation and player-role choices can therefore feel different once the match begins.

EA also notes that accepting a Tactical Suggestion retains your current formation. That matters if you want to explore a suggestion without treating it as a command to change the shape of your team. The suggestion can influence your tactical choices while the basic formation remains intact.
Think of the code as a package of instructions rather than a promise about results. It carries the tactical arrangement you saved, but the match engine still applies the rules of the mode in which you load it. A code imported into Career is consequently a starting point for testing, not proof that an Ultimate Team tactic has been reproduced byte for byte in practical match behavior.
Competitive and Authentic: the practical differences
FC 26 has two gameplay presets relevant to this comparison. Competitive is mandatory in Ultimate Team. Career Mode—Manager and Player Career—defaults to Authentic, but allows you to toggle between the presets. Authentic is not available in Ultimate Team.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Gameplay factor | Competitive | Authentic | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design emphasis | Responsiveness and player control | Realism and a more true-to-life match tempo | Competitive is used in Ultimate Team; Career defaults to Authentic and can toggle |
| Passing | Faster passing | More measured overall tempo; no specific passing-speed figure is stated | Preset behavior, not a tactic-code setting |
| Dribbling and skill moves | Tighter, faster dribbling and faster skill moves | Lower dribbling and skill-move speeds | Preset behavior, not a tactic-code setting |
| Defending and positioning | Reduced AI defending | Greater AI defending, tighter defensive lines, and more realistic midfield positioning | Preset behavior, not a tactic-code setting |
| Goalkeeper outcomes | No specific difference stated in the cited notes | More physics-based rebounds and blocks | Authentic preset |
These are not small differences in presentation alone. A tactic depends on how quickly players move the ball, how responsive dribbling feels, and how the AI contributes defensively. In Competitive, faster passing and movement can make a setup feel more immediate, while reduced AI defending changes the defensive support you experience. In Authentic, more measured movement, tighter defensive lines, and different midfield positioning can change spacing and the timing of opportunities. This is why a tactic that looks identical in its code may not produce an identical match experience.
For example, a possession setup built around short, quick circulation may appear more aggressive in Competitive because passes arrive sooner and dribbling inputs respond faster. The same instructions under Authentic can create longer pauses between actions and more deliberate defensive reactions. Conversely, a compact defensive shape may feel less dependent on manual intervention in Authentic because EA describes greater AI defending and tighter lines there. These are preset tendencies, not guarantees for every player or match.
What Career Mode adds to the setup
Career Mode has Tactical Vision requirements and Head Coach role-familiarity boosts. EA says it narrowed Tactical Vision requirements to the ones it considers essential. Player Roles are no longer requirements for a Tactical Vision, which gives you more freedom to choose roles for your particular team.
A Head Coach familiar with a Tactical Vision can still increase familiarity with a role. EA’s example is a Possession tactic using either a False 9 or a Poacher: either role can be selected, while the coach’s familiarity boost applies to the False 9. In other words, a role can fit the vision without being mandatory, and coach familiarity is a separate consideration from whether the role is permitted.
This extra layer exists in Career’s tactical context; the evidence here does not establish an equivalent Tactical Vision or Head Coach familiarity system in Ultimate Team. When moving a setup from Ultimate Team into Career, judge not only how it plays under Authentic or Competitive, but also how the selected vision and your coach’s familiarity relate to the roles you chose.
The practical consequence is flexibility with a trade-off. You are not forced to select only the role that appears most closely associated with your chosen vision, so a squad’s personnel can remain the priority. However, a familiar coach can make one role more familiar than another. If two otherwise valid role choices produce different familiarity levels, that distinction belongs to Career’s management layer rather than to the code-transfer system itself.
How to compare one tactic across the two modes
For a useful comparison, hold the tactical choices steady and pay attention to the mode and preset. Otherwise, a change in formation or role can be mistaken for a gameplay-preset effect. EA does not publish a measured effectiveness comparison showing that a particular code wins more often or performs better in one mode, so assess the behavior you observe rather than assuming the transfer has a guaranteed outcome.
- Save or load the tactic code. Use the code feature to carry the setup into the other mode. FC 25 codes can also be applied in FC 26 and convert when applied.
- Check the gameplay preset. In Ultimate Team, Competitive is locked on. In Career, identify whether the match is using its default Authentic preset or whether you have toggled to Competitive.
- Keep the setup consistent for the comparison. Compare the same formation and role choices where possible. If you accept a Tactical Suggestion, remember EA says it retains the current formation.
- In Career, check the Tactical Vision and coach context. Roles are not Tactical Vision requirements, but a familiar Head Coach can boost familiarity with a role. Factor that into your evaluation rather than treating role choice and vision as the same setting.
- Judge match behavior under each preset. Observe passing tempo, dribbling and skill-move responsiveness, defensive AI support, line positioning, midfield shape, and—under Authentic—goalkeeper rebounds and blocks. These are the areas EA identifies as differing.
This is a controlled comparison, not a guarantee that every match will unfold alike. The official notes describe preset-level tendencies; they do not provide specific outcome rates or prove that any particular tactic code has the same effectiveness across modes.

Reading the results without drawing the wrong conclusion
Use several observations rather than one memorable match. If your forwards seem slow to receive a pass in Career, first note whether the match is on Authentic before changing the formation. If a defensive line appears more stable or the goalkeeper produces a different rebound, record the preset as part of the explanation. A single result cannot separate player attributes, opponent behavior, role familiarity and gameplay tuning.
It is also useful to compare like with like. Testing Ultimate Team’s Competitive matches against Career’s Authentic default mixes a mode difference with a preset difference. Switching Career to Competitive removes that particular mismatch, but it does not remove Career’s Tactical Vision and Head Coach context. You can therefore make two separate comparisons: Competitive Ultimate Team versus Competitive Career for gameplay feel, and then Career’s Tactical Vision and coach effects as an additional management factor.
Choosing which preset to use in Career
If you want Career matches to use the tuning EA associates with responsiveness and player control, select Competitive where the Career settings permit it. If you prefer the more realism-oriented tempo and positioning, use the default Authentic preset. The choice is about the match experience, not about whether a tactic code is valid.

- Stay with Authentic when you want more measured movement, greater AI defending, tighter defensive lines, more realistic midfield positioning, and its more physics-based goalkeeper rebounds and blocks.
- Evaluate the Career layer separately by considering the Tactical Vision and Head Coach role-familiarity boost alongside the gameplay preset.
Ultimate Team does not offer that same preset choice: Competitive is mandatory there, and Authentic is unavailable. A Career test using Authentic is therefore not a like-for-like gameplay test of an Ultimate Team match, even if the tactic code is the same. Switching Career to Competitive removes that preset mismatch, but Career’s Tactical Vision and coach mechanics remain relevant to the setup.

“If the code loads, it should play the same.”
Loading confirms that a setup can be reused; it does not make Competitive and Authentic equivalent. A tactic’s match behavior is affected by the preset underneath it.
“Career roles have to match the Tactical Vision.”
EA says Player Roles are no longer requirements for a Tactical Vision. A familiar Head Coach can boost familiarity with a role, but that is not the same as a role being compulsory.
“The Career default is the only Career option.”
Career defaults to Authentic, but Career can toggle between Authentic and Competitive. Ultimate Team, by contrast, remains on Competitive.
“A tactic code proves the tactic is effective.”
A code carries a setup, not evidence of its results. EA’s notes do not give a measured comparison of tactic effectiveness between Ultimate Team and Career, so no win-rate or performance advantage should be inferred from code compatibility alone.

“Competitive and Authentic are just difficulty settings.”
They are gameplay presets with different design goals and behaviors. EA describes changes to passing speed, dribbling, skill moves, AI defending, defensive lines, midfield positioning and goalkeeper outcomes, so the distinction affects how a tactic operates during play.
Edition and update scope
These mechanics are documented for EA SPORTS FC 26. EA’s gameplay notes date to July 22, 2025, and its Career Mode deep dive to August 1, 2025. They do not establish that later annual editions use the same rules, nor do they quantify changes from subsequent patches. Check the game’s current edition and update context before applying the comparison to a different release.
Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Career defaults to Authentic but allows a toggle between Authentic and Competitive. Ultimate Team is locked to Competitive, and Authentic is unavailable there.
Do Career player roles have to match the Tactical Vision?
No. EA says Player Roles are no longer Tactical Vision requirements. A Head Coach familiar with the vision can still increase familiarity with a particular role, such as a False 9 in EA’s Possession example.
Are FC 25 tactic codes compatible with FC 26?
EA says FC 25 tactic codes are compatible with FC 26 and convert when applied. Compatibility still does not make the two modes use identical gameplay tuning.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: FC 26 tactic codes are portable, but tactics do not play identically across Ultimate Team and Career Mode. Ultimate Team mandates Competitive gameplay; Career defaults to Authentic and can switch presets. Compare the same code under the same preset when possible, then account for Career’s Tactical Vision choices and Head Coach role familiarity before judging the result.
