Check the terms attached to your specific code—such as the email, card, or retailer listing—or ask the seller or issuer. A retail Xbox gift card is a different product and follows different expiration rules.
How to tell whether your unused Game Pass code has expired
- Find the terms for that code. Check the email, card, or listing for an expiration date or a “redeem by” deadline.
- Confirm the code’s details. Check its Game Pass tier and duration, eligible country or region, whether it is a retail or promotional offer, and whether it requires a particular account state or adds time to an existing subscription.
- Ask the seller or issuer if the deadline is unclear. Microsoft’s guidance does not set one universal expiration period for all third-party Game Pass subscription codes, so the specific offer’s terms matter.
Keep the seller’s details and purchase record in case you need help. Microsoft directs customers who bought the wrong code to contact the retailer. If a code that appears valid is rejected, check that the account and region match the code, then contact the seller or Microsoft support.
Game Pass codes and Xbox gift cards are not the same
A Game Pass subscription code grants subscription time or an entitlement; an Xbox gift card adds account value. Microsoft says gift cards purchased at retail never expire, while promotional gift cards—including examples from Microsoft Rewards or Xbox Game Pass Rewards—do expire. Those gift-card rules do not establish an expiration policy for separate Game Pass subscription codes. See Microsoft’s Xbox gift card page.
Microsoft’s gift-card terms also distinguish non-promotional account balance, which does not expire, from promotional balance, whose expiration is governed by the promotion’s terms. Check the offer terms and any expiration information shown for the balance in your account.

What if you already redeemed the code?
Once redeemed, the code’s value or entitlement is attached to the Microsoft account used. To check the subscription status and relevant end or renewal date, open Services & subscriptions while signed in to that account. That date is about the active subscription, not the deadline for redeeming an unused code. Microsoft describes prepaid subscriptions as payable with a download code or single-use token in its recurring-billing guidance.
