There is no single game called “the free Steam co-op shooter.” Three current Steam listings fit that description particularly well: Sven Co-op, Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop, and Unturned. All three list online co-op and LAN co-op. None of the captured Steam feature lists documents cross-play or shared/split-screen play, and Steam Cloud is not proof of cross-save between Steam, consoles, or another PC storefront.
If your friends are on Xbox or PlayStation, or if two people need to play on one PC, treat those features as unconfirmed for all three games. The one explicit party-size figure is Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop, whose Steam listing says tactical co-op supports up to eight players.

Quick comparison of the three likely games
The title is a category rather than a unique game name, so the answer depends on which free Steam co-op shooter you mean. This table uses only features explicitly shown on the games’ Steam listings.

“Not documented” is deliberately more precise than “no.” An online-co-op tag confirms that cooperative online play is advertised, but it does not identify the other platforms that can join. Likewise, a Steam Cloud tag shows that cloud functionality is advertised on Steam; it does not establish that progress transfers to a console or to a different PC storefront.

What each feature actually means
Cross-play
Cross-play means players on different platforms or storefront ecosystems can join the same multiplayer session—for example, a Steam player joining someone on Xbox or PlayStation. A listing that says only “Online Co-op” confirms a network co-op mode, not cross-platform matchmaking. The three Steam feature lists considered here do not name cross-play.
That distinction matters when arranging a session. Two friends may both own a game but still be unable to join if one uses a platform that the game does not support for multiplayer with Steam. Unless the developer explicitly identifies the supported platform combinations, do not promise an Xbox–Steam or PlayStation–Steam session based on the generic co-op label.
Cross-save
Cross-save, sometimes called cross-progression, means a character, campaign state or other progress follows you between supported platforms. Steam Cloud is a separate label. It indicates that the Steam page advertises cloud storage or synchronization for the Steam version, but the captured listings do not document progression shared with consoles or another storefront.

A Steam player should therefore separate two questions: whether a Steam installation can use the game’s cloud feature, and whether the same progress can be opened outside Steam. The listings answer the first at a high level by displaying Steam Cloud; they do not answer the second.

Split-screen or couch co-op
Split-screen allows two or more people to play on one display and one local machine, normally with separate controllers or input devices. None of the three captured Steam feature lists includes Shared/Split Screen. The presence of LAN co-op does not change that: LAN normally means multiple devices connected to the same local network, not multiple players sharing one screen.
Sven Co-op: retro first-person missions
Sven Co-op is described on Steam as a cooperative game originally based around Valve Software’s Half-Life. Its missions have players working together against computer-controlled enemies while solving puzzles and completing objectives. The listing marks the game as free and advertises Online Co-op, LAN Co-op and Steam Cloud.
What the listing confirms
- Cooperative mission play against computer-controlled enemies.
- Online co-op for network sessions.
- LAN co-op for local-network sessions.
- Steam Cloud is listed for the Steam version.
- The game is marked free on Steam.
What it does not confirm
- No cross-play support is documented.

That makes Sven Co-op the clearest fit for players seeking old-school first-person mission design and puzzle-solving with friends on Steam or over a LAN. It is not a sound choice if your plan depends on a console friend joining or on two people sharing one PC display, because neither feature is identified by the store information.

Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is presented as a free top-down co-operative shooter. Its Steam description emphasizes an “epic bug hunt” and squad-level tactics. The detailed listing states that tactical co-op supports up to eight players, and it lists Online Co-op, LAN Co-op, Steam Cloud and Workshop support.

Why it stands out for larger groups
Among these three candidates, it is the only one with an explicit party-size number in the supplied Steam information: up to eight players, attributed to the Reactive Drop Team’s 2017 listing. That makes it the strongest documented match for a larger online or LAN group. The number should not be generalized to the other two games, whose listings do not provide a comparable figure.
Platform limitations still apply
The eight-player statement describes the size of a tactical co-op session; it does not say that eight people can connect across different platforms. Cross-play is not documented, and neither is cross-platform progression. Steam Cloud appears on the page, but that alone does not establish a save shared with a console or another storefront. Split-screen is also absent from the captured feature list.
Choose this game when the group wants a top-down viewpoint, squad tactics and a documented maximum of eight players. Confirm that everyone can use the same supported Steam environment before planning a mixed-platform event.

Unturned: open-world survival rather than a mission shooter
Unturned is described on Steam as a free-to-play open-world zombie survival sandbox. Its description centers on scavenging, hunting, shelter building, exploration and cooperation—or conflict—with other players. The listing shows Online Co-op, LAN Co-op and Steam Cloud, and it also identifies in-app purchases.

All three listings include both connection labels. Online co-op is the appropriate category when players connect over the internet. LAN co-op refers to players joining over a shared local network, such as devices connected to the same home network. Neither label implies couch co-op, and neither identifies the consoles or storefronts that may participate.

If the group is in the same location and wants to use a local network, the LAN label is the relevant option. In both cases, each player should plan on using a separate device unless an official source specifically confirms shared-screen play.

How to check compatibility before you download
1. Identify the exact game
Ask the group whether they mean Sven Co-op, Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop or Unturned. Their genres and documented group information differ, so “the free Steam co-op shooter” is not precise enough for a compatibility decision.
2. Match the connection method to the group
For internet play, look for the Online Co-op feature on the exact Steam listing. For a same-network session, look for LAN Co-op. These are the two connection modes shown for all three candidates.
3. Treat platform mixing as an unanswered question
If one person is on Xbox, PlayStation or another PC storefront, do not infer compatibility from the Online Co-op tag. None of the captured listings documents cross-play. Require a platform-specific statement from the developer or publisher before promising that mixed-platform players can join.

Steam Cloud appears on each listing. That is useful evidence that the Steam edition advertises a cloud feature, but it is not evidence of a shared save with consoles or another storefront. Make a separate decision about where the group will play and where progress must be available.
5. Plan for separate screens
None of the three feature lists names Shared/Split Screen. If two people intend to play on one PC and one monitor, the listings do not provide a basis for expecting that arrangement. LAN co-op is the documented local alternative, but it normally requires multiple devices on the same network.
