Do Game Remasters Include DLC, Multiplayer, and All Original Content?

A remaster may include DLC and multiplayer, but neither is guaranteed unchanged. Check the exact edition’s content list, modes, and online requirements.

Sometimes—but “remaster” does not guarantee that a game includes every original DLC pack, mode, multiplayer feature, or online service. What carries over depends on the specific game, edition, and platform. Check the publisher’s content list for the exact version before buying.

What does “all original content” mean in a remaster?

A remaster can preserve the main game while changing or omitting individual features. It may include expansions but rebuild multiplayer, retain the original level design but update presentation, or offer a mode whose online service has separate requirements. There is no universal definition of “all original content,” so treat it as a game-specific claim rather than a promise built into the word “remaster.”

The official examples below show different approaches; they are not a representative sample of all remasters.

Do remasters include the original DLC?

Sometimes. Check for each expansion or DLC by name, rather than assuming that a remastered base game includes add-ons that were sold separately.

  • Dark Souls Remastered: Bandai Namco lists the original Artorias of the Abyss DLC as included. Bandai Namco’s official page describes the game, DLC, and multiplayer.
  • Alan Wake Remastered: Remedy’s FAQ says it includes the original game and the The Signal and The Writer DLC episodes.
  • Command & Conquer Remastered Collection: EA says the collection includes all three expansion packs. Its listing also notes that some content may require gameplay to unlock. EA’s product page gives the included-content details.

Does multiplayer carry over unchanged?

No. A remaster may retain multiplayer while changing how it works, or list multiplayer without promising that online access will last indefinitely.

  • Dark Souls Remastered: FromSoftware says the original level design remains, while the stated online session limit rises from up to four players in the original to up to six in the remaster, using a dedicated server. See FromSoftware’s release announcement.
  • Command & Conquer Remastered Collection: EA describes its multiplayer as rebuilt, not simply copied unchanged. The same product listing describes a modernized UI, map editor, bonus gallery, and remastered music. EA’s listing also says online features may be retired with notice.
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2: Activision’s FAQ lists local two-player and online multiplayer, as well as leaderboards. Online play and other features have internet and subscription requirements; console-disc play is possible offline.

How can you check what a specific edition includes?

  1. Open the publisher’s page or store listing for the exact platform and edition. A game name alone may not identify which extras or features are included.
  2. Verify DLC and expansions by name. Look for the specific add-ons you want, and check whether any content must be unlocked through gameplay.
  3. Check modes and multiplayer separately. Confirm campaign and other modes, local play, online play, player limits, and any cross-play information the listing provides.
  4. Read access requirements. Look for internet, platform subscription, and other conditions attached to online play or features.
  5. Consider service availability. A listing that describes online multiplayer tells you what the game offers, not how long publisher-operated servers will remain available. Check the publisher’s current service information where available.

What the examples establish—and what they do not

These official pages establish that some remasters include named DLC, that multiplayer can be modified or rebuilt, and that access can depend on connectivity, subscriptions, unlocks, or continuing services. They do not establish how often remasters include all DLC or preserve original multiplayer: the cited pages provide no representative statistic for that.
