The Realm owner pays for the hosted world; invited members can play without buying a Realms subscription of their own. You may still need a separate console online-multiplayer subscription, the right Minecraft edition, and an invitation.
Who needs to pay for a Minecraft Realm?
Realms is an optional hosting subscription for the person who wants a shared world to stay online. Minecraft describes Realms as “personal multiplayer servers that you can use to play with your friends.” The owner maintains the subscription; invited members do not need to buy one to join. Minecraft’s official Realms page answers the guest-cost question directly: “The people you invite (members) don’t need to purchase a Realms subscription to play on your Realm.”

That means Realms is not an entry fee each friend pays. It is a way for the owner to host a world that stays available when they are not playing.
What you may still need to play
A console online-multiplayer subscription
On Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch, online multiplayer may require the platform’s own subscription: Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online, respectively. This is separate from Minecraft Realms. Paying for a platform service does not buy or replace a Realm, and a Realms subscription does not replace a required platform service. Check Minecraft’s multiplayer guidance and your platform’s current requirements, which can change.

#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
The same Minecraft edition as the host
You must be using the edition the Realm supports: Bedrock players join Bedrock Realms, and Java players join Java Realms. Having Minecraft installed is not enough if you and the host are on incompatible editions. Make sure your game is also up to date.
An invitation and the right account
Ask the Realm owner to invite the account you will use to play. On consoles and mobile, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the invitation where required. Account privacy settings can also restrict multiplayer; for a child account, an adult may need to enable multiplayer access.

If you can’t join the Realm
Check these in order:
- Confirm that you and the host are using the same edition—Bedrock or Java—and compatible current game versions.
- Ask the owner to verify that the Realm subscription is active and that they invited your correct account.
- If you are on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch, check whether your platform requires an online-multiplayer subscription.
- Sign in with the account tied to the invitation and review multiplayer or privacy permissions. A child account may need an adult to change its settings.
- Check your internet connection and whether your device is supported.
Minecraft’s multiplayer support page covers the relevant setup requirements.
