For online multiplayer on an Xbox console, you generally do not need to buy a separate Xbox Live subscription if your Game Pass plan includes online console multiplayer. Xbox’s current US plan comparison lists that benefit with its console Game Pass plans. Free-to-play games are an exception: Xbox says every Xbox player can access their multiplayer without a paid plan. The answer depends on your plan and platform, so check your tier and region before renewing or buying another subscription.
Which Game Pass plans include online multiplayer on Xbox consoles?
Xbox’s current US Game Pass plan comparison lists online console multiplayer among the benefits of its console plans: Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. If you play paid games online on an Xbox console and have a qualifying console plan, the comparison does not show a separate Xbox Live subscription as necessary.
Check the plan attached to the Microsoft account you use on your console. Plan names, availability, and benefits can vary by region; use the comparison page for your market if you are outside the US.
Does the answer change for PC Game Pass or free-to-play games?
PC Game Pass
PC Game Pass is listed separately from the console plans. The comparison does not identify it as providing online console multiplayer, so do not assume a PC plan covers multiplayer on an Xbox console. This console entitlement guidance also does not determine what a PC game requires for online play.

Free-to-play games on Xbox
For free-to-play games, Xbox says multiplayer access is open to every Xbox player. You do not need a paid Game Pass plan solely to play those games online.
How to check whether you have the right plan
- On the Xbox plan comparison page, select the market that matches your account and review the current plan benefits.
- Confirm whether your subscription is a console plan or PC Game Pass, and verify which Microsoft account is signed in on the console.
- Match the plan to what you play: paid-game online multiplayer on console calls for a plan that lists online console multiplayer; free-to-play multiplayer does not require a paid plan.
What does Game Pass cost, and is Xbox Live still a separate purchase?
Microsoft’s US store listed Game Pass Ultimate at $22.99 per month when accessed October 8, 2026. That is a US listing at that time, not a global price or a guarantee of what you will pay later; check the current US store listing for price and terms. The page says subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled.

Xbox’s current comparison uses the names Game Pass Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass. The available sources do not establish the date or full history of the change from the Xbox Live Gold name, so this answer does not rely on a transition timeline. For the present decision, look at the multiplayer benefit on your current plan rather than buying a second subscription based on an old name.

No change to online console multiplayer entitlement is announced in Xbox’s September 3, 2026 cloud gaming announcement. Xbox said monthly cloud gaming hours were planned to begin in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. Those announced limits concern cloud gaming time, not a requirement to buy Xbox Live for console multiplayer. Xbox said pricing and further implementation details would be provided before the change takes effect; check its latest announcement for updates.
