Problematic gaming is associated with slightly lower academic achievement on average, but current evidence does not show that ordinary online play causes students’ grades to fall. The relationship may run both ways: academic difficulties can also come before problematic gaming. Most studies examine problematic gaming or videogame use broadly, not online multiplayer games alone.
What studies show about gaming and grades
Two 2026 meta-analyses found a small negative association between problematic gaming and academic achievement. One pooled 23 articles, 25 effect sizes and 16,067 participants, reporting an overall effect of -0.17. A separate analysis of 30 studies, 99 effect sizes and 167,774 participants reported a correlation of r = -.166. These are modest average associations, not estimates of how much any one student’s grades will change.

The 2024 systematic review found a negative relationship in 24 of its 27 studies. But a negative association does not establish that gaming caused lower achievement, and the evidence concerns problematic gaming or videogame use more broadly rather than online multiplayer play specifically. Chew, Yow and Dimech’s 2026 meta-analysis, Paterna and colleagues’ 2026 meta-analysis and Alzahrani and Griffiths’ 2024 systematic review examine the limits and patterns in this evidence.

Studies do not all test the same direction of influence. In Chew, Yow and Dimech’s 2026 analysis, the longitudinal association was larger when earlier academic achievement was used to predict later problematic gaming (r = -0.29) than when problematic gaming was used to predict later achievement (r = -0.09). Cross-sectional studies, which measure variables at roughly the same time, showed an association of r = -0.18. Paterna and colleagues likewise found that longitudinal results suggested a potentially bidirectional relationship.

That pattern fits a more cautious interpretation: school problems may contribute to gaming becoming problematic for some students, while problematic gaming may also accompany later academic difficulties. The studies do not establish a single cause-and-effect pathway. The 2024 review notes that most included studies were cross-sectional, making it difficult to determine which came first.
Problematic gaming is not the same as playing for many hours
Gaming time by itself is not enough to identify problematic gaming. The 2026 meta-analysis describes problematic gaming in terms of persistent use alongside clinically significant impairment or distress, and cautions that “gaming time alone is not a sufficient indicator of PG.” A student’s schedule matters, but so do effects on responsibilities, control over play and wellbeing.

- Ordinary recreational play: Playing online games, even regularly, does not by itself show a problem or predict poor grades.
- Possible interference: It is more useful to notice whether gaming repeatedly displaces schoolwork or sleep, or whether the student struggles to control play and experiences distress.
- Educational games: Game-based learning in a classroom is a different activity from leisure gaming and should not be treated as the same exposure.
What “academic performance” means in these studies
The reviewed literature mainly measures achievement through grades, GPA or test scores. It does not establish equivalent effects on attendance, motivation, subject mastery or general cognitive ability. Results also depend on whether a study measures gaming hours, screens for problematic use, follows students over time or captures a single point in time.

Not without qualification. In Alzahrani and Griffiths’ 2024 review, 21 of 27 studies were conducted in Asian countries. The authors also identified common limitations such as cross-sectional designs, non-probability sampling, self-reported data and inconsistent measures. Findings from this literature should not be treated as a universal estimate for every age group, country or kind of online game.

What students, families and educators can take from the evidence
Rather than assuming that gaming is the cause of a student’s grades, look at the whole situation: whether schoolwork or sleep is being displaced, whether play feels difficult to control, and whether distress or academic trouble appeared first. If there is a concern, a conversation about school support and healthier ways to cope is more appropriate than diagnosing a student from hours played alone. The evidence supports concern about problematic gaming, not a blanket claim that online games harm every student’s performance.
