Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To spend less on a gaming console, compare the exact model across new, manufacturer-refurbished and pre-owned offers, then weigh the final checkout price against what comes with it and the protection you get. A lower headline price is not automatically the better deal: condition, included accessories, return terms, warranty and seller all affect the value.
Compare the full cost of the same console
Start with the exact console model and edition you want. Match storage capacity and any other model differences, then compare condition and included items. A console-only offer may cost less upfront, while a bundle may be better value if it includes a game or accessory you would otherwise buy.
Use the checkout total, not just the advertised price. Account for delivery and taxes where applicable, and check whether the offer’s stated condition, included components and return terms are clear. Prices and stock change, so verify the details for your country at the time you buy.
Check manufacturer-refurbished consoles
Manufacturer-refurbished stock can offer a lower-cost alternative to a new console while retaining manufacturer-backed coverage. Availability and terms depend on the product and market; read the exact listing rather than assuming every refurbished console has the same warranty.

- Xbox: Microsoft’s US Certified Refurbished page describes its products as inspected and tested and states a 90-day warranty for Xbox consoles. The page also advertises savings of “up to 36%” across its refurbished collection; that is not a console-specific saving, so it should not be treated as one. See Microsoft’s US Certified Refurbished information.
- Nintendo: Nintendo of America’s cited US refurbished system listings state a one-year limited warranty. Check the warranty and included items on the particular product listing. View Nintendo’s US refurbished products.
- PlayStation: Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe’s cited UK refurbished PS5 page states a 12-month manufacturer warranty. This UK example does not establish terms for other markets or products. View the UK refurbished PS5 listing.
These are market- and product-specific examples, not a like-for-like warranty guarantee across brands. Confirm the coverage in the applicable local listing and consider local consumer rights before purchasing.
Use price matching only when the offer qualifies
A retailer’s price-match policy may not apply to the cheapest offers. Best Buy’s US Price Match Guarantee excludes categories that include refurbished, pre-owned and open-box products, certain bundles, and some limited-quantity or promotional offers. Other retailers set their own conditions, and policies can change. Check the current policy for the exact item and seller before relying on a match. Read Best Buy’s US Price Match Guarantee.

Decide whether a used console is worth it
Pre-owned systems can have a lower asking price, but you need to account for the condition and the protection that may be missing. Nintendo specifically warns that secondhand-market products do not carry a Nintendo hardware or accessory warranty, and advises buyers to research sellers. That warning is Nintendo-specific; check the relevant manufacturer’s terms for other brands.
Before buying used, verify what is included and whether the seller offers a return window or warranty. Ask about the console’s condition and confirm that the listing covers the components you need. A low price is less useful if you must replace a missing controller or accept a purchase with no practical remedy if it arrives faulty.

Retailers may also sell pre-owned consoles or accept trade-ins. GameStop’s 2023 fiscal-year annual report, filed in 2024, describes sales of pre-owned platforms and trade-ins for cash or store credit. It does not establish a current offer or the trade-in value of any particular console, so check current terms and compare the actual offer with other options. | Route | What to compare | Protection and policy checks |
|---|---|---|
| New | Exact model and edition, bundle contents, checkout total, delivery and taxes | Check the seller’s return terms and the warranty for your market. |
| Manufacturer-refurbished | Exact model, stated condition, included components and final price | Read the specific product listing’s warranty; manufacturer terms vary by market and product. |
| Pre-owned | Condition, seller, included components and total cost, including anything you may need to replace | Check the seller’s return window and any warranty. Nintendo says its hardware and accessory warranty does not cover secondhand-market purchases. |
Price matching is a separate possibility, not a purchase condition to assume: confirm that both the item and competing offer meet the retailer’s current rules.
