After a stone evolution, a Pokémon follows the evolved species’ learnset, which may differ from its pre-evolution’s. Some evolved forms learn few or no additional moves by leveling, so check the specific game’s learnset before using a stone if you want a particular move.
What changes when a Pokémon evolves with a stone?
In the core series, using an evolution stone triggers an immediate evolution. From then on, level-up moves are determined by the evolved Pokémon’s learnset in that game. It may continue learning moves, but it does not necessarily keep learning the same moves it would have learned before evolving.
There is no universal rule that stone evolutions stop learning moves—or that they continue learning all the pre-evolution’s moves. The outcome varies by species and game. Many stone-evolved Pokémon have few or no additional level-up moves, but there are exceptions. Bulbapedia’s overview of evolution stones discusses this general pattern and the Generation VIII-and-later Move Reminder option.
How to decide when to use the stone
- Identify the game and exact Pokémon form. Learnsets can vary between games and forms.
- Look up the evolved Pokémon’s level-up learnset for that game. Check whether it will learn the move you want after evolving.
- If the move is only in the pre-evolution’s level-up learnset, wait or check the reminder option. Teach or retain the move before evolving unless you have confirmed that the game can restore it afterward.
- Verify Move Reminder availability in that title. Access and eligible moves are game-specific; do not assume the option is available.
Can a Move Reminder restore pre-evolution moves?
In Generation VIII and later, some eligible stone-evolved Pokémon can use a Move Reminder to access moves from their pre-evolution’s level-up learnset. This is a way to relearn eligible moves; it does not mean the evolved Pokémon automatically learns every pre-evolution move when it levels up. Check the Pokémon and game in question before relying on this route. Bulbapedia’s evolution-stone reference describes the general mechanic.

What the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl guide advises
The official Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl Trainers Guide, under “Raising and Evolving Pokémon”, advises players that an evolved form may not learn some new moves through leveling and suggests waiting to use the stone until the Pokémon has a solid lineup. That is guidance for those games, not a rule for every Pokémon game.
