Rocket League generally applies a soft reset to Competitive ranks at the start of a new season: placements recalibrate your rank, using prior-season rank or skill as a guide rather than wiping everyone to zero. The exact result can vary by playlist and season, and no fixed rank change is guaranteed.
What happens to your rank when a new season starts?
Ranked Playlists are recalibrated through placement matches. In its Season 4 explanation, Psyonix said a player’s previous-season rankings would inform placement matchmaking and their eventual skill ranking. That is the key difference between a soft reset and starting from scratch: the prior rank remains relevant, even though the new season can place a player differently.

Rocket League’s Season 22 notes, released March 11, 2026, say a soft reset was applied to all Ranked Playlists. The notes do not publish a complete current placement formula, promise a particular number of rank changes, or say that every player will move down by a set amount. Your outcome depends on the season’s system and the playlist; you should not assume a specific landing rank before playing placements. Season 22 notes · Season 21 notes
Soft reset vs. full wipe
| Reset type | What it means |
|---|---|
| Soft reset | Previous-season rank or skill informs placement matchmaking and the eventual rank. The new season recalibrates ranks without treating every player as a blank slate. |
| Full wipe | Prior skill information is removed as the basis for placements. Rocket League’s Season 4 announcement described this as the earlier approach and said it had led to poor match quality while players worked through placements. |
The Season 4 announcement dates to March 15, 2017, so its explanation clarifies the distinction but does not establish today’s exact formula. Season 4 announcement

Can an inactive playlist affect your placements?
Yes, but this is a separate playlist-specific adjustment, not the ordinary seasonal reset. A June 14, 2024 Rocket League FAQ described a possible upward rank adjustment when a player starts placements in a playlist they left inactive. The FAQ said all three conditions had to apply:
- You played at least 10 matches in another Competitive Playlist during the previous season.
- You did not play the playlist you are now queuing for during that previous season.
- Your rank in the target playlist is significantly below the rank predicted from your other playlists.
Rocket League said these adjustments are determined case by case, are upward rather than downward, and do not apply to Tournament ranks. The FAQ noted the feature had been tested since early 2024 and rolled out to all players the week of the announcement; that announcement does not establish whether the rule has changed since. Has Rocket League always reset ranks every season?
No. “Every season” is too broad if it refers to the game’s entire history. In its Season 5 announcement, Rocket League said competitive skill would not reset and ranks would carry over from Season 4. Later season notes describe soft resets as the recurring pattern, but reset policy has varied. Season 5 announcement
The free-to-play Season 1 transition also used a specific soft reset to account for incoming players, with ranks shifting closer to the median. That was a transition-era adjustment, not a statement of the standard formula for every later season. Free-to-play Season 1 announcement
