Yes. You need an active PlayStation Plus subscription to play Squad online on PlayStation 5. The official PlayStation Store listing states, “PS Plus required for online play.” Sony’s general support guidance says most PS4 and PS5 games with online multiplayer require PlayStation Plus, and Squad is not identified as an exception.
The current Store information also needs careful reading: the full PS5 listing has no confirmed release date, while a separate free Alpha Preview listing is dated October 16, 2026. Those are different entries, so the preview date should not be treated as the confirmed launch date for the complete game.

What you need for online Squad multiplayer
For an online match, the practical requirements are an eligible PS5 copy or access to the relevant preview, an internet connection, a PlayStation Network account, and an active PlayStation Plus membership. The subscription requirement comes from the game’s own PlayStation Store listing, rather than from an assumption based only on the fact that Squad is a multiplayer shooter.
- Console: The current official Store material lists Squad for PS5. It does not present a PS4 version in the listings described here.
- Subscription: PlayStation Plus is required for online play.
- Connection: You need internet access to reach online servers and participate in multiplayer.
- Account: Online console play requires the PlayStation Network account used by your PS5.
PlayStation Plus is an access requirement, not a guarantee that every server, test build, or preview will be available at every moment. A preview can have separate eligibility, maintenance, or regional conditions shown on its own Store page.

Which PlayStation Plus tier is enough?
Sony documents online multiplayer as a benefit of all three current paid tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. The available Squad information does not say that Extra or Premium is required, and it does not establish that the game is included in either tier’s catalog. If your only goal is to unlock console online multiplayer, Essential is the lowest tier Sony identifies as including that benefit.
| Plan | Online multiplayer | What the Squad information establishes | Who might choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Included | Satisfies the documented online-multiplayer benefit; no evidence says a higher tier is necessary | Players who primarily need online access |
| Extra | Included | Online access is included, but the available listing does not confirm Squad catalog access | Players who also want the additional game catalog |
| Premium | Included | Online access is included, but the available listing does not confirm Squad catalog access | Players who want Premium features in addition to multiplayer |
The important distinction is between multiplayer access and game-catalog access. Buying Extra or Premium does not, on the evidence available here, establish that you can play the full game without separately obtaining it. Check the current Store page and the terms of the specific edition or preview you intend to use.
Can you play Squad multiplayer without PlayStation Plus?
Not for the online mode covered by the official Squad listing. Without an active membership, the console will not meet the listed requirement for joining online multiplayer. A free trial or a lapsed subscription should be treated as inactive unless PlayStation’s account page shows that multiplayer access is currently available.

The separate PS5 Alpha Preview listing uses different wording: it says online play is optional and includes a practice environment. That means the preview advertises a way to use the build without connecting to an online match, but it does not turn the online requirement into an exception. The safest reading is:
- Use of the preview’s practice or other non-online content may be possible without entering an online match.
- Joining the preview’s online multiplayer still falls under the Store requirement for PS Plus online play.
- You should not assume that the same offline or practice options will exist in the complete release unless its final listing says so.
The full game’s offline feature set has not been established by the current listing information. Do not buy a subscription expecting it to provide a solo campaign; the available material describes multiplayer capacity and a preview practice environment, not a complete single-player campaign.

What the PS5 listings actually show
Two official Store entries are relevant, and they answer different questions.
| Store entry | Platform and status | Online details | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squad PS5 concept listing | PS5; release date to be determined | Cross-platform multiplayer; up to 99 online players with PlayStation Plus | This is the broad listing for the game, but it does not confirm a launch date |
| Squad PS5 Alpha Preview | PS5; marked Free Beta; listed release date October 16, 2026 | Online play is optional; one local player; up to 99 online players; practice environment | This is a separate preview entry and should not be treated as the full game’s release announcement |
The date of October 16, 2026 belongs to the Alpha Preview entry. The broader Squad concept page still says the release date is to be determined. A preview becoming available does not, by itself, prove that the commercial version has launched, that all final features are present, or that progress and access will carry over.
How large are Squad matches on PS5?
The Store description advertises support for up to 99 online players with PlayStation Plus and describes cross-platform multiplayer. That is a capacity claim for the listed PS5 product, not a promise that every match will always contain 99 people. Actual lobbies can depend on server population, region, matchmaking, testing schedules, and the particular build.
You may also see the game described using a 50-versus-50 battle format. That wording explains the advertised team structure of a match; it is not an independently measured player-population statistic. The dependable number supplied by the Store listing is the stated maximum of up to 99 online players.
What cross-platform multiplayer means here
Cross-platform multiplayer means the Store listing presents PS5 players as able to participate in the same online multiplayer environment as players on other supported platforms. It does not remove the PlayStation Plus requirement for a PS5 player. It also does not specify every platform, input rule, voice-chat behavior, account-linking requirement, or whether cross-play can be disabled.

How to check your PS5 before trying to play
These checks can prevent the most common subscription and edition misunderstandings.
- Open the PlayStation Store on your PS5 and search for Squad.
- Verify that you are looking at the PS5 listing or the separately labeled PS5 Alpha Preview, rather than assuming the two entries are the same product.
- Read the listing’s online-play line. The full listing states that PlayStation Plus is required for online play.
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Subscriptions and confirm that PlayStation Plus is active on the account you will use.
- If you are choosing a plan, compare Essential, Extra, and Premium based on whether you want only multiplayer access or also the broader benefits of a higher tier.
- Install the correct game or preview entry, apply any available update, and launch it while signed in to the same PlayStation Network account that holds the membership.
Menu wording can vary slightly by system software version or account region. The key check is the subscription status shown for the account launching the game, not merely whether another user on the console once subscribed.

The game says PlayStation Plus is required
Confirm that the membership has not expired and that the console is online. If the account has multiple users, switch to the account that owns the active subscription. Restarting the game after the account status refreshes can clear a stale entitlement check.
You bought Extra or Premium but still cannot join
All three tiers include Sony’s online-multiplayer benefit, so the tier name alone should not block access. Check that the subscription is active, that you are signed into the correct region and account, and that you installed the PS5 product you intended to use. A higher tier does not substitute for owning or being granted access to the game or preview itself.

You can enter practice but not an online match
The Alpha Preview explicitly describes online play as optional and includes a practice environment. That behavior is consistent with a build that can run non-online content while still enforcing a membership requirement for online servers. Check the preview’s current Store conditions and your PlayStation Plus status rather than treating practice access as proof that multiplayer should work without a subscription.
You cannot find the full release
The broad PS5 listing currently gives the full game’s release date as to be determined. Finding a dated Alpha Preview entry does not mean the commercial release has been published. Search for the exact product label and read the edition name before purchasing or downloading.
Is PlayStation Plus included with the game?
No. PlayStation Plus is a separate Sony subscription. The Store phrase “PS Plus required for online play” describes the service entitlement needed for multiplayer; it does not say that a game purchase includes membership. Conversely, a membership does not establish ownership of the full Squad release.
The available information also does not establish that Squad is part of the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. Do not select Extra or Premium solely on the assumption that the catalog includes this title. Use the game’s current Store page to verify any future catalog placement or promotional access.

The Alpha Preview is marked Free Beta, which affects how that particular preview may be obtained; it does not erase the separate online-service requirement. Its listing gives October 16, 2026 as the preview’s release date, identifies PS5 support, allows one local player, and advertises up to 99 online players plus a practice environment.
Because the preview and the full listing are separate Store entries, treat each entry’s conditions as product-specific. Preview access can end, change, or be replaced when development moves forward. The only firm conclusion for online play is that the official Squad listing requires PlayStation Plus.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for different types of players
- You want regular online matches: Maintain an active PlayStation Plus subscription; Essential is the lowest tier Sony documents with online multiplayer.
- You are considering Extra or Premium: Choose one only if its other benefits matter to you. The available Squad information does not require either tier or confirm catalog inclusion.
- You want to try the preview: Look for the separately labeled PS5 Alpha Preview and remember that its October 16, 2026 date is not the full game’s launch date.
- You only want non-online practice: The Alpha Preview listing mentions a practice environment and optional online play, but the complete game’s offline scope is not confirmed.
- You are on PS4: The current official listings described here identify PS5, not PS4, so do not assume a PS4 version is available.
