No. One person buys and runs a Jackbox Party Pack on the device hosting the game. Everyone else joins that session for free from a phone, tablet, laptop, or other web-enabled device at jackbox.tv. Players enter the room code shown on the host’s screen; they do not need to buy the game, install a Jackbox app, or create a Jackbox account.
The important exception is the host platform. A purchase made for PC/Mac, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iPad, Apple TV, or Amazon Fire TV stays on that platform. If you later want to host from a different platform, Jackbox says you need another purchase.

What you actually need to buy
Jackbox separates the game license from the devices used as controllers. The paid copy belongs to the host device. The other devices simply open a browser and connect to the host’s game session.
| Person or device | What is required | What is not required |
|---|---|---|
| Host | A supported device with the Party Pack purchased and installed, plus a screen that shows the game. | A separate copy for each player. |
| Players | A phone, tablet, laptop, or other internet-connected device with a modern web browser; the room code shown by the host. | A purchase, Jackbox app, or Jackbox account. |
| Remote group | A way for everyone to see the host’s game screen, such as screen sharing through a video-call or streaming service. | A copy on every remote player’s device. |
Jackbox’s official How to Play guidance puts the rule plainly: “Only one person in your group needs to own a Jackbox product in order to host the game.” That copy can serve the entire session, whether the other players are sitting in the same room or joining remotely.

How the platform license works
The one-copy rule applies to players in a session, not to every platform on which you might someday want to host. Jackbox states that purchases are not transferable between platforms. A PC/Mac storefront purchase does not unlock the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iPad, Apple TV, or Amazon Fire TV edition, and a console purchase does not unlock the PC/Mac edition.
This means the practical question is not “Which device will each player use?” It is “Which device will normally run the game?” Buy the Party Pack on that host platform. If you later decide to run the game on another platform, that platform requires its own purchase.
| Host platform | Why it may fit | License limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Steam or another PC/Mac storefront | Easy to move between locations, convenient for remote screen sharing and streaming, and simple to connect to a television with the appropriate display hardware. | The license remains tied to that PC/Mac storefront; it does not transfer to consoles or TV platforms. |
| Nintendo Switch | Portable hosting that can move between rooms or locations. | The Switch version is a separate purchase from PC/Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, Apple TV, and Fire TV versions. |
| PlayStation or Xbox | Well suited to a living room where the console is already connected to a television. | The purchase stays on that console platform and is not a cross-platform entitlement. |
| Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV | Convenient TV-based hosting when the household already uses one of these devices. | You must buy the version for that platform; players still join through browsers. |
Jackbox’s April 27, 2026 platform guidance summarizes the policy: “If you buy a game on one platform and decide you want it on another, you will need to make another purchase.” Treat that as a platform decision before checkout rather than expecting a later transfer.
Can you buy Jackbox on Steam and have people play on phones?
Yes. A PC/Mac copy can host a session while the other players use phones or tablets. The phone is not running the purchased game; it is acting as the player’s input device through a browser. The host launches the Party Pack on the computer, keeps the game screen visible, and gives everyone the room code. Each player visits jackbox.tv, enters the code and a name, and joins.
The same arrangement works when the host copy is on a Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iPad, Apple TV, or Fire TV. The players’ browser devices do not have to match the host’s platform, and they do not need to buy the game on their own platform.
Which devices can host a Party Pack?
Jackbox’s family guidance lists these host categories:
- PC or Mac
- Nintendo Switch
- Xbox
- PlayStation
- iPad
- Apple TV
- Amazon Fire TV
Availability can vary by specific Party Pack, operating system, storefront and country, so check the listing for the exact pack before purchasing. The general ownership rule remains the same: the host installs the edition sold for that platform, while participants use browsers.
The host screen is mandatory
Players need to see the game’s questions, timers, instructions and results. For an in-person game, that normally means putting the host device on a television or monitor, or gathering around its screen. A laptop can be connected to a TV with an HDMI connection when the computer screen is too small for the group.

For remote play, the host shares the game window or display through a video-call or streaming service. Everyone can then watch the shared game while using a separate phone, tablet or computer browser to submit answers. A player who can enter the room code but cannot see the shared game screen is missing half of the required setup.
How players join a game
In the same room
- The host installs the Party Pack on the chosen platform and launches it.
- The host selects the desired game from the pack. The game displays a room code and usually a player-entry screen.
- Each player opens a browser on a phone, tablet or laptop and goes to jackbox.tv.
- Players enter the room code shown on the host screen and choose a player name.
- After everyone appears in the lobby, the host starts the round. Players keep their browser device in hand while watching the shared host screen.
No download is needed on the player devices. A browser-based join also means an Android phone, iPhone, tablet, Chromebook or laptop can participate without matching the host’s operating system.
Remote play
- The host launches the game on the purchased platform.
- The host starts a video call or stream and shares the game screen, not merely a camera pointed away from it.
- Remote players open jackbox.tv on a second device when possible. Using a phone for controls and the call on a computer or TV makes the game screen easier to follow.
- The host reads the room code aloud or displays it in the shared screen.
- Players enter the code in their browsers and confirm that their names appear in the lobby.
One device can sometimes handle both the call and the browser, but two screens reduce the chance that a player loses the shared game view while typing an answer. The host should also make sure the shared window includes the full game display and that call participants can hear its audio when the game uses sound cues.

Can players join from different platforms?
Yes. “Cross-platform” in a Jackbox session means that the host’s purchased game and the players’ browser devices can be different. For example, one person can host from a PlayStation while friends join on iPhones, Android phones, Windows laptops and tablets. Another session can be hosted on a Mac while the players use a Switch only as a personal internet device, provided its browser setup can reach the join page.

Players are not claiming ownership of the host’s game. They are connecting to that running session, so their device platform does not create a second license requirement. The platform restriction matters when you want to install and run the Party Pack itself somewhere else.
Accounts, subscriptions and ownership
No Jackbox account for ordinary purchases
Jackbox support says you do not need to create an account with Jackbox to play. Players can join with the room code, and the host can launch an owned copy without a separate Jackbox membership.
No recurring charge for an owned copy
Jackbox also says that once you buy its games, you own them indefinitely on the platform where they were purchased. Ordinary purchased Party Packs do not require a recurring subscription. This is different from paying for access through a service that offers games as a channel.

Amazon Luna is a separate case
Amazon Luna’s Jackbox Games Channel is a subscription service. It should not be confused with buying a Party Pack from a platform storefront. If you access Jackbox through that channel, the subscription’s availability and terms govern access; a normal one-time purchase follows the platform-ownership rule described above.

Which platform should you choose for the host copy?
Choose based on where the game will physically run most often and how you expect to show it to players.
- Choose PC/Mac if you expect to host in different places, share the screen remotely, or connect a computer to several displays.
- Choose Nintendo Switch if portability between rooms, homes or trips matters more than a permanent living-room setup.
- Choose PlayStation or Xbox if the console is already connected to the television where your group plays.
- Choose Apple TV or Fire TV if that device is already the household’s preferred TV platform and you want the host software on it.
- Choose an iPad if you want a compact host device that can be carried to a larger display when needed.
Do not choose based on the players’ phones. Their phones are only controllers, and the host platform does not need to match them.
Common situations and the correct answer
| Situation | Do you need another purchase? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You own the game on a computer and friends use phones. | No. | The computer hosts; phones join in a browser. |
| You own the game on a Switch and friends use tablets. | No. | Tablets are browser controllers, not host copies. |
| You want to move from a PC to a PlayStation. | Yes. | The purchase is platform-specific and does not transfer. |
| You host in person one night and remotely another night from the same platform. | No additional platform purchase. | The same host copy can be used; remote players need a way to see the host screen. |
| A friend wants to host independently from their own console. | That console needs its own platform purchase. | They would be running the game on a different host platform, not merely joining your session. |
| You are considering a Jackbox Games Channel subscription through Amazon Luna. | It depends on the service access you choose. | A Luna channel subscription is separate from a one-time Party Pack purchase. |
Troubleshooting when someone cannot join
The room code is rejected
- Have the player re-enter the current code exactly as shown. A new game or a restarted session can display a different code.
- Confirm that the player is on jackbox.tv, not in an unrelated search result or an old browser tab.
- Check that the host is still on the game’s lobby or active room screen.
The player joined but cannot see the game
The browser connection and the shared game display are separate. Keep the host screen visible in the room, or have the host share the correct game window for remote play. A player may be successfully connected while still unable to answer if the host’s screen is hidden.

Moving the session to another device is not the same as letting players use different devices. If the new device is a different platform, the existing purchase does not unlock it. Decide whether the original host device can be connected to the desired display before buying a second edition.
A remote player is using one small screen
Suggest using a second device: one screen for the call or stream and another for jackbox.tv. This keeps the game board visible while the player enters answers.
What to verify before checkout
- Confirm the exact Party Pack and the storefront edition for the device you will use as host.
- Check that the platform is supported in your country and that the specific pack is listed for that platform.
- Remember that platform availability, regional pricing and service terms can change; verify the current storefront listing before paying.
- Plan how the host screen will reach the group: a television, monitor, HDMI connection or remote screen share.
- Make sure every participant has a browser-capable device and internet access.
- If you are considering Amazon Luna, check the current channel subscription terms rather than assuming they are the same as a one-time purchase.
The purchase decision is therefore about the host’s platform, display and future use. It is not a requirement to equip every participant with a copy.
