No—buying extra ships with real money is not required to play Star Citizen. RSI says you need a Star Citizen game package to install and play, and that package includes a ship. Additional ships sold as pledges are optional; RSI says pledge ships are intended to be obtainable in-game after launch.
What do you have to buy to play Star Citizen?
You need an RSI account and a Star Citizen game package. RSI’s account guide, updated August 26, 2025, says packages include a digital download of Star Citizen, a ship, and other account items. The exception it describes is the standalone Squadron 42 pledge, which is not a Star Citizen game package.
That makes the key distinction simple: the package is for game access; extra ship pledges are optional fleet purchases. RSI’s materials do not say that you must buy a separate ship beyond the package.
Can you get more ships in-game instead?
RSI says ships offered as pledges during development will be obtainable in-game once the game has gone live. That is a statement about the intended post-release game, not confirmation that every ship is currently available to earn or buy in the Alpha. RSI does not specify in that support answer when the game will be live. See its limited-stock ship FAQ, updated February 10, 2026.

RSI also described the broader intent in an older ship-customization Q&A: players should not need to pledge beyond an initial starter package to play, and nearly all customization options were intended eventually to be available or earnable in-game. Treat that as historical intent, not a guarantee about what is implemented in the current Alpha.
How do Alpha insurance rules fit in?
Insurance is separate from whether you need to pledge for a ship. RSI’s Ship Insurance FAQ, updated June 2, 2026, says ships and vehicles in the Alpha and PTU currently receive basic insurance that does not expire, to facilitate testing. Insurance included with pledges will not start counting down until the game is live and out of testing. RSI says its post-release plan is for players to purchase insurance for each ship with UEC, the game’s currency.

Are ship pledges refundable or cash investments?
No. Under RSI’s Terms of Service, ships, insurance, and other virtual goods are limited license rights and cannot be redeemed from RSI for money or monetary value. Store credit may be used for eligible pledge items, but credit created by converting pledges is not refundable in real-life currency. A ship pledge is therefore a purchase of game access or virtual goods under RSI’s terms, not a cash-value investment.

No. RSI describes ship upgrades, also called CCUs, as pledge-store transactions that let a player change a pledged ship to a higher-value ship.
