documentperformanceevents.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file. It is an Event Log message resource for the Microsoft-Windows-Documents provider, normally found at %SystemRoot%System32DocumentPerformanceEvents.dll, rather than a normal game, Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime.
If Windows reports that documentperformanceevents.dll is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is corrupted, repair Windows first. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or begin with regsvr32.

What documentperformanceevents.dll does
Windows uses message DLLs to provide the readable descriptions displayed for events in Event Viewer. Microsoft explains this design in its documentation on Event Log message files.

The expected main-file location is:
%SystemRoot%System32DocumentPerformanceEvents.dll
Some Windows installations also contain a localized .mui resource, such as:
%SystemRoot%System32en-USDocumentPerformanceEvents.dll.mui
The exact language-resource layout depends on the installed Windows build. Do not mistake a .mui language file for the main DLL.
Before repairing: check the file and the error
Check whether the file exists
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter:
text
%SystemRoot%System32
- Press Enter.
- Search for
DocumentPerformanceEvents.dll.
If it is present there, do not replace it immediately. The error may concern a damaged dependency, an invalid Event Log registration, a missing localized resource, or a different copy of the filename.
If the only copy is in a user profile, Downloads folder, temporary directory, or an unrelated application folder, treat it as suspicious until its signature is verified.
Check the exact wording
Reported messages include variations such as:
- “This application failed to start because DocumentPerformanceEvents.dll was not found.”
- “The file DocumentPerformanceEvents.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading DocumentPerformanceEvents.dll.”
- “DocumentPerformanceEvents.dll could not be loaded.”
- “DocumentPerformanceEvents.dll is corrupted.”
The wording varies between Windows components and applications. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of the named DLL is missing, not necessarily that the named file itself has disappeared.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates
A failed or interrupted Windows update can leave a protected component incomplete. Finish servicing Windows before running deeper repairs.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install every available Windows update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Test the action that produced the error.
If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not keep downloading individual DLL files while Windows servicing is incomplete.
Fix 2: Run DISM, then System File Checker
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Microsoft’s supported sequence is to repair the Windows component store with DISM first, then repair protected files with SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test again.

When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems it identifies and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
If DISM says source files cannot be found
Use a legitimate Windows installation image or matching repair source. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and build.
An example command is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ^
/Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows only with the correct path to your matching repair source. Do not use an unrelated ISO or a source from a different Windows edition.
Fix 3: Repair Windows through Windows Update
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
On supported Windows 11 installations, Windows Update can reinstall the current version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Click Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to power and internet.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Test the error again.
This option repairs Windows components without manually copying a DLL. Microsoft describes the process in its guide to reinstalling the current version of Windows.
If the option is unavailable, use the DISM and SFC procedure above, then consider an in-place repair using official Windows installation media.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and verify the signature
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
Security software may quarantine a legitimate system file, or it may detect a malicious file using a Windows-looking name. Do not restore the item based on the filename alone.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
DocumentPerformanceEvents.dll. - Open the entry and note its original path.
- If the original path was a Windows system directory, inspect the file before restoring it.
- If the path was Downloads, a temporary folder, a user profile, or an application directory, do not restore it blindly.
- Run a full scan.
To inspect a file’s signature:
- Right-click the DLL.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signer and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A Microsoft-looking filename outside the Windows directory is not proof of authenticity. If the signature is absent, invalid, or unexpected, quarantine the file and scan the system. No reliable evidence ties this filename itself to a particular malware family, so the path, signature, and security-product record matter more than the name.
Fix 5: Check whether an application is misreporting the problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If the popup appears only when launching one application, repair Windows first. Then repair that application through its official installer or built-in repair option.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its More options button.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings.
- If neither option is available, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
Because documentperformanceevents.dll is an Event Log message resource, reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the default remedy. Use those repairs only when the application’s own documentation or a separate error specifically identifies that runtime.
If the application is old, check whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit and install the matching application release. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL over a 64-bit Windows component, or the reverse.
Fix 6: Review drivers only when the event names a device
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A printer or document-related event may appear alongside a driver problem, but the DLL itself is not a printer-driver package. Use Device Manager only when the error identifies a device, printer, or driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or the device category named in the error.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- If the issue began after a driver update, open Properties > Driver and choose Roll Back Driver, when available.
For a clean driver repair, download the driver from the device manufacturer or Windows Update. Do not use a random DLL as a substitute for a damaged driver installation.

DocumentPerformanceEvents.dll is an Event Log message/resource DLL. It normally does not need manual registration. Running a command such as this is therefore not a general fix:
regsvr32 DocumentPerformanceEvents.dll
It may produce a registration error without addressing the real problem. Use Windows servicing, DISM, SFC, or an in-place repair instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the repair still fails
Use System Restore
Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a known update, cleanup operation, driver installation, or repair attempt.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Click System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
This is a recovery fallback, not a file-specific replacement method.
Perform an in-place repair
If DISM cannot repair the component store and System Restore is unavailable, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Choose the option to keep personal files and applications when offered, and back up important data first. Microsoft documents the supported process for reinstalling Windows with installation media.
Common causes and the right response
| What happened | Best response |
|---|---|
| Windows update was interrupted | Finish updates, restart, then run DISM and SFC |
| System files became corrupted | Run DISM followed by SFC |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Verify the original path and Microsoft signature before restoring |
| The file is outside the Windows directory | Scan it and treat it as suspicious |
| A single application reports the error | Repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows |
| A printer or device event is involved | Check the named driver in Device Manager |
| DISM cannot find repair files | Use a matching official repair source |
| Repair tools cannot recover Windows | Use System Restore or an in-place repair |
FAQ
Is documentperformanceevents.dll malware?
The filename belongs to a real Microsoft Windows event-message component. A copy is not automatically safe simply because it has that name. Check its location and digital signature, especially when it appears outside %SystemRoot%System32.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Should I download documentperformanceevents.dll?
No. Standalone DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or an incomplete file. Windows Update, DISM, SFC, recovery tools, and official installation media are the safe distribution paths.
Does this file belong in SysWOW64?
Do not assume that. Windows versions and architectures use different component layouts. The best-supported normal location for the main file is %SystemRoot%System32; let Windows repair tools restore the correct copy.
Is this a Visual C++ or DirectX error?
Usually not. This DLL is an Event Log message resource, not a standard application runtime. Repair the Windows component store before reinstalling unrelated runtimes.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found?
That message can mean the named file is missing, but it can also indicate a missing dependency or damaged Windows component. DISM and SFC are the correct first repair steps.

Can I copy the DLL from another computer?
Do not do that. The other computer may have a different Windows build, language, architecture, or servicing state. A copied file can create a new mismatch while leaving the component store damaged.
What if the error appears only in Event Viewer?
If Windows continues working and only Event Viewer shows the message, record the provider and event details before changing files. Repair Windows if the event is recurring or accompanied by system errors, but do not assume the DLL is an application dependency merely because Event Viewer names it.
