- You still use the Lexmark printer or scanner: reinstall the complete driver package for the exact model and Windows architecture.
- The error started after a Windows upgrade or driver update: remove the broken Lexmark software, restart, then install the newest compatible package.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: verify its original path and publisher before restoring anything.

Those details can vary between driver packages, so do not choose a replacement file by version or size alone.
The exact Lexmark model cannot be identified reliably from the filename. The requesting program, installed-device list, driver folder, or Lexmark installer must identify it.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Lexmark driver
This is the most likely repair when you still need the printer or scanner.
- Disconnect the Lexmark USB cable unless the Lexmark installer specifically tells you to leave it connected.
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Lexmark.
- Remove the Lexmark printer software, scan software, utilities, and communication components associated with the affected device.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the official Lexmark Drivers & downloads page in your browser.
- Search by the exact printer or multifunction model, not by
lxa1usb1.dll. - Select your Windows release and the correct architecture.
- Download the complete printer and scanner package offered for that device.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart again after installation completes.
Check the result by printing a test page and opening Windows Scan or the Lexmark scan application. If the original program now opens without the DLL message, the driver package restored the component correctly.
Match 32-bit and 64-bit software
Do not substitute a 32-bit DLL for a 64-bit installation or the reverse. A 32-bit application needs the driver components intended for its environment, while a 64-bit application and driver package must be compatible with 64-bit Windows.
To check Windows architecture:

- Select System, then About.

First check the startup list:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Lexmark entries or an item whose publisher is unknown.
- Right-click the entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the message disappears and you no longer use the device, uninstall the remaining Lexmark software from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
For a scheduled task:
- Press the Windows key and type Task Scheduler.
- Open it as administrator.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for Lexmark tasks or tasks that launch an executable from an old Lexmark folder.
- Open the task’s Actions tab before disabling it.
- Disable only the task clearly connected to the removed device.
Do not delete a task merely because its name is unfamiliar. Confirm its executable path first. If the error continues, note the program name shown in the dialog or Event Viewer. That identifies what is loading the DLL.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove a driver component after a detection or cleanup operation. Do not restore the file automatically just because its name matches the error.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to
lxa1usb1.dll. - Inspect the original file path, detection name, publisher, and signature details.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are secondary checks. They repair Windows components and protected system files; they generally do not recreate a missing third-party Lexmark driver file.

Install pending Windows updates first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands are complete.
A successful result may say that SFC found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. Test the Lexmark software afterward. If the commands report that files could not be repaired, run Windows Update again and repeat the repair once. If only the Lexmark application still fails, return to the driver reinstall rather than repeatedly running SFC.

Fix 5: Use Device Manager to remove a broken device entry
A stale device entry can keep an incomplete driver installation active.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Identify the Lexmark device or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are removing the broken Lexmark package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Lexmark package again.
Do not uninstall unrelated USB controllers or imaging devices. If the Lexmark device is not listed, remove its software from Installed apps and reinstall the package with the printer disconnected.
Fix 6: Restore Windows after a recent driver change
If the error began immediately after a driver update, Windows upgrade, or software installation, System Restore may return the driver and registry state to an earlier working point.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can remove drivers, installed applications, and configuration changes made after the selected restore point. Test the printer or scanner after Windows restarts.

Do not download or copy the DLL manually
Avoid standalone DLL download sites and files copied from another computer. A replacement may have the wrong architecture, belong to another Lexmark driver generation, contain malware, or fail because a dependency is missing. Similarly named files from other generations, such as lxa2usb1.dll or lxa3usb1.dll, are not interchangeable.

Do not copy lxa1usb1.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or an application folder unless the official Lexmark installer places it there. Windows DLL loading follows defined search rules, and an arbitrary copy can create version conflicts or security problems.
regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for self-registering COM or OLE libraries. There is no reliable evidence that lxa1usb1.dll is such a component, so do not run:
regsvr32 lxa1usb1.dll
The message “specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the Lexmark component is missing. Registering the file would not repair that dependency.
If the Lexmark device is unsupported
Some older Lexmark printers and scanners do not have a driver compatible with the current Windows release. Check the exact model on Lexmark’s official support site.
If no compatible package exists:
- Remove the obsolete Lexmark software.
- Try Windows’ built-in printer class driver if it supports basic printing.
- Use a supported connection method if the manufacturer documents one.
- Keep the old device isolated from unnecessary software.
- Replace the device when scanning or advanced features are unavailable.
Do not force an old driver into Windows compatibility mode and assume that the missing DLL is fixed. The installer may complete while the underlying USB or scan component remains incompatible.
