What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Short answer: no. A small first season is only a count of announced downloadable characters. It does not reveal a game’s sales, player retention, development capacity, finances or intended support period. Before buying, separate the launch roster from DLC, inspect how specific the roadmap is, verify whether earlier promises were delivered, look for updates beyond characters, and confirm exactly what your edition and platform include.
The most useful question is not “How many fighters are in Season 1?” It is “What value is available now, what has the publisher committed to in dated and identifiable terms, and has it demonstrated that it can deliver?”

Why character count is a weak health signal
“Season 1” is a product label, not an industry-wide measurement. One publisher may use it for a few characters released over several months; another may bundle stages, story chapters, modes, costumes or balance work under the same name. A low number can reflect a deliberately focused plan, a smaller development team, a different pricing model or a roster that was already broad at launch. A high number can simply mean that more content was announced, not that the game is selling well or will be supported for years.
Character production is also only one part of a fighting game’s health. Sales, active players, matchmaking times, tournament activity, netcode performance, balance work, bug fixes, communication and the publisher’s budget all matter. Public announcements rarely disclose enough information to calculate those factors, and the official material examined for this topic contains no comparative statistic connecting first-season size with success, failure, sales or longevity.

Use the first-season count as an inventory detail. Treat the following evidence as more informative:
- What the base game contains without a pass.
- Whether planned additions are named or merely teased.
- Whether release windows are specific and realistic.
- Whether previously announced content actually arrived.
- Whether support includes balance adjustments, modes, story or technical maintenance.
- Whether the edition you are considering includes the pass, stages, early access or only the base game.
Those observations still cannot guarantee a game’s future. They can, however, keep a buyer from mistaking a small number for proof of trouble.
Separate the launch roster from downloadable content
Count the base game first
Start with the characters and modes available in the base purchase, before any season pass or post-launch update. Record whether the roster count includes unlockable fighters, guest characters, alternate versions or characters available only after an update. Also note the game’s offline modes, training tools, arcade or story content, local multiplayer and online features. A small DLC plan may be perfectly reasonable when the launch package already provides the modes and characters you want.
Then count announced DLC
Make a second list for downloadable fighters and a third for non-character content such as stages, story chapters, modes, color packs and system updates. Do not add the lists together until you have labelled them. A publisher’s headline total can otherwise make a launch roster look larger than it is.
SNK’s announcement for FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves is a useful example of the distinction. It described 17 roster characters plus five DLC fighters in Season Pass 1, making 22 characters in the announced package. That is not the same as saying the base game launched with 22 playable characters. The Special Edition bundled the base game and Season Pass 1, while the base purchase and the pass remained separate concepts.

Ask what “included” means
Marketing pages may describe a combined package, a deluxe edition or a season pass rather than the contents of the standard game. Check whether a listed fighter is available on day one, scheduled for later, included in your edition or sold separately. If you are buying physically, verify the platform and whether the pass is a code, a disc entitlement or a download that requires an internet connection.
Five indicators that tell you more than a small season count
1. Launch value
Judge the game you can play now, not only the game shown on a future roadmap. A useful launch-value checklist includes:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Base roster size and character variety.
- Distinct fighting styles rather than duplicate versions of the same character.
- Training, replay, arcade, story and local-play options.
- Ranked and casual online systems, spectator or replay tools, and matchmaking features.
- Accessibility settings and control options.
- Whether essential systems are complete or marked as future updates.
A compact launch roster can still offer strong value if the characters are meaningfully different and the core modes are complete. Conversely, a large roster does not compensate for missing modes or unreliable online play.
2. Roadmap specificity
A credible roadmap identifies what is planned and when. Look for named characters, numbered slots, a release window, and a description of included material. A pass that says “more fighters coming soon” gives you little information. A plan that names the fighters, separates stages from characters and identifies seasonal windows is easier to evaluate.
In February 2025, Bandai Namco’s TEKKEN 8 Season 2 announcement described Anna as the first of four planned DLC characters, listed three additional characters and identified two stages across the planned seasonal windows. The important evidence was not simply the number four; it was the level of identification and the separation of fighters from stages.

3. Delivery evidence
Announcements are intentions. Delivered updates are evidence of execution. Compare each promised item with the publisher’s later release notices. Record the date it became available, whether the scope changed and how clearly the change was explained.
For example, on December 2, 2025, Bandai Namco announced that Miary Zo was available and completed TEKKEN 8 Season 2, bringing the publisher’s stated roster total to 40 playable characters. This historical follow-through is more useful than treating the original Season 2 announcement as a guarantee. It still does not establish future support, sales or player numbers.
4. Support beyond characters
Fighting games need ongoing technical and competitive work. Look for dated patch notes or update announcements covering balance, matchmaking, stability, modes, story content and events. A publisher that communicates only character trailers gives you less visibility into the game’s maintenance.
Bandai Namco’s April 2024 TEKKEN 8 roadmap discussed battle-system adjustments, free updates, modes and story content alongside DLC. Those categories matter because they affect every player, including someone who never buys a character. They are observable signs of activity, not a promise that the game will remain healthy.
5. Purchase terms
Two buyers can pay for different products while using the same game name. Check the platform, edition, physical or digital format, included pass, early-access period, separate-purchase options and update requirements before you compare prices or rosters.

Edition contents can change, so use the current store or publisher listing for your platform rather than relying on an old box description.
What the published examples actually show
The following examples illustrate different announcement styles and package sizes. They are historical case studies, not proof that any particular count causes success or failure.
| Game and source date | Announced character information | Other announced material | What a buyer should learn |
|---|---|---|---|
| TEKKEN 8, Season 2 announcement, February 2025 | Anna was identified as the first of four planned DLC characters; three further characters were listed. | Two stages were included across planned seasonal windows. | A named, numbered plan gives more information than an unexplained total. |
| TEKKEN 8, completion announcement, December 2, 2025 | Miary Zo’s release completed Season 2; the publisher stated that the roster reached 40 playable characters. | The notice was a delivery update rather than a new promise. | Later release evidence is stronger than an initial trailer. |
| Guilty Gear -Strive-, Season Pass 4 announcement, July 22, 2024 | Dizzy, Venom, Unika and Lucy were listed. | Two new battle stages and color-pack content were announced; the announcement also mentioned a new mode in beta testing. | Count characters and non-character content separately, and label the information as an announced plan at that date. |
| FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves, package announcement, August 21, 2024 | 17 roster characters plus five Season Pass 1 DLC fighters, or 22 in the announced package. | The Special Edition bundled the base game and Season Pass 1; physical PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 formats were identified. | A bundle total is not a launch-roster total. Verify which edition you are actually buying. |
These examples have different counts and support descriptions, but the announcements do not establish a general relationship between first-season size and game health. Do not turn them into a ranking.
How to investigate a game before buying
Step 1: Identify the exact product
- Write down the platform: PlayStation, Xbox, Switch or PC.
- Record whether the listing is standard, deluxe, ultimate, physical or digital.
- Note the base-game price separately from any season pass.
- Check whether future-DLC early access, stages or cosmetic packs are included.
- Confirm whether the listing is for the current edition in your region.
This prevents a common error: comparing the base price of one game with the bundled content of another.

Step 2: Build a launch-content inventory
- Count base-game characters only.
- List the modes available without downloading future content.
- Mark any character or mode that requires an update, account or online connection.
- Separate free updates from paid DLC.
- Decide whether the launch package already meets your needs without a pass.
Step 3: Decode the roadmap
- Copy each named or numbered character into a list.
- Record the stated release window, using the publisher’s own level of precision.
- List stages, modes, story chapters and other material in separate columns.
- Mark items that are confirmed, planned, in beta testing or still unspecified.
- Check whether the pass covers all listed content or only some of it.
A roadmap is clearer when it tells you both what is coming and what is not included. “Four characters” is incomplete information if stages, colors or modes are described elsewhere.

Step 4: Check the delivery record
- Find the publisher’s release notice for each earlier promised item.
- Compare the announced name and timing with the delivered version.
- Look for documented delays, substitutions or cancellations.
- Read update notes for changes to battle systems, matchmaking, modes and story content.
- Give more weight to dated release evidence than to a cinematic announcement.
Do not treat a delay as automatic proof of failure. A clear explanation followed by delivery tells you more than an unchanged trailer schedule.
Step 5: Verify technical and access requirements
- Check whether the game requires an internet connection for updates or for access to the full roster.
- Confirm the storage and download requirements shown for your platform.
- Verify whether multiplayer requires a platform subscription or account.
- Check cross-play and cross-progression statements if those features matter to you.
- Confirm that the edition’s future-content entitlement applies to your platform and region.
SNK stated that FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves requires an internet connection and a game update to access all characters. That requirement affects the practical value of a physical copy or an offline setup even when the advertised package count is attractive.

Patterns that deserve caution
- The base roster and the pass roster are presented as one unexplained total.
- Most future content is unnamed, undated or described only as “coming later.”
- A release window has passed without an update or explanation.
- Repeated announcements promise characters while technical problems, matchmaking or known balance issues receive no communication.
- The edition page does not clearly state whether stages, characters or early access are included.
- The full advertised roster depends on an update that your connection or platform cannot reliably support.
None of these signs proves that a game is doomed. They indicate that you have less information and should avoid paying for future content unless the current package already satisfies you.
Patterns that reduce uncertainty
- The base roster, DLC and free updates are clearly separated.
- Characters and other content are named, with release windows and status labels.
- Earlier scheduled additions arrived, and changes were explained.
- Patch notes show continuing work on balance, stability, modes or story.
- Edition pages specify platform, included passes and early-access terms.
- The game is enjoyable with the launch content, so future support is a bonus rather than a requirement.
A practical decision framework
Use the following three-question test before you purchase:
- Would I buy the base game as it exists today? If the answer is no, do not let a large roadmap persuade you to prepay for a future you cannot verify.
- Can I describe the roadmap precisely? You should be able to name the planned characters, identify stages or modes separately and state the release windows and edition coverage.
- Has the publisher delivered comparable promises? Look for actual release notices and update notes, not only trailers.
Then classify the purchase:
| Your evidence | Reasonable approach |
|---|---|
| Strong launch package; vague or small DLC plan | Buy if the base game meets your needs. Treat future content as optional. |
| Strong launch package; specific roadmap; earlier content delivered | A pass may be reasonable if its included items and timing suit you. |
| Weak launch package; large but vague roadmap | Wait for release evidence, a complete edition or clearer communication. |
| Edition contents or online requirements are unclear | Resolve those details before purchase; roster totals are not enough. |
| Frequent updates but no character announcements | Do not mistake a quiet DLC plan for inactivity. Balance, modes, story and technical work may be the publisher’s priority. |
How to compare two games without misleading yourself
Put both games into the same worksheet rather than comparing headline totals. Use one row for each decision factor:
| Factor | Game A | Game B | Question to answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base roster | Record only launch characters. | Record only launch characters. | Which package is satisfying without DLC? |
| Modes and systems | List training, story, arcade, local and online features. | List the same categories. | Which game supports the way you play? |
| Roadmap | Names, windows and non-character content. | Names, windows and non-character content. | Which plan is specific enough to evaluate? |
| Delivery | Released items and documented changes. | Released items and documented changes. | Which publisher has shown follow-through? |
| Support | Balance, technical patches, modes and story. | Balance, technical patches, modes and story. | Is support broader than character marketing? |
| Purchase terms | Edition, platform, pass and access rules. | Edition, platform, pass and access rules. | Are you comparing equivalent products? |
This method avoids a false conclusion such as “Game B is healthier because it has five announced fighters.” It also exposes when a cheaper standard edition omits the stages or future access that make the other game’s bundle look comparable.
What a small first season can mean
A small first season may mean the publisher has a compact plan, is prioritizing balance and modes, has already put substantial variety in the base roster, or has not yet disclosed later content. It may also reflect limited production capacity. Without financial, retention and development data, you cannot choose among those explanations from the character count alone.
