When NYT Connections stalls, do not guess another word at random. Rebuild the board: question the first category you noticed, test alternate meanings, search for a precise four-word relationship, and use hints only as far as you want the spoiler to go. Connections is deliberately designed so that several words can appear to fit more than one group, but every puzzle has one complete solution.
Why Connections feels stuck
Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to divide them into four groups of four. Each group shares a connection, and the groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is the easiest and purple is the trickiest. The New York Times says editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary.

The central trap is intentional overlap. A word may fit a familiar category, a less-common definition, a phrase, a name, a sound-alike, or a different part of speech. A set that looks convincing can therefore be a decoy. The official rules describe the puzzle as having exactly one solution while using words that could fit multiple categories.

That design explains a common experience in player discussions: solving three groups and finding that the final four seem impossible. Usually, the last group is not random; one of the earlier groups has absorbed a word that belongs elsewhere, or the remaining relationship uses a meaning you have not considered yet.

The reset checklist before your next guess
Use this sequence whenever you are stuck. It is designed to expose a false assumption before you spend another life.
- Read all 16 words again. Scan the entire board rather than staring only at the four words you currently favor. A proposed group is not confirmed merely because its members share a broad idea.
- Write down your proposed category in a short phrase. For example, “words that can precede ___” or “alternate meanings of ___.” If you cannot state the link precisely, the set is still a hypothesis.
- Test every member against that exact phrase. Each of the four words should fit in the same grammatical and logical way. If one requires a special exception, remove it and search again.
- Ask what else each word could mean. Check noun, verb, adjective and proper-name uses; familiar expressions; abbreviations; homophones; and less-common dictionary definitions. A word such as “LOCK” might suggest a door, but its other senses can point toward an entirely different category. That example illustrates the kind of ambiguity players report, not a guaranteed category in a particular daily puzzle.
- Look for a fifth candidate. If five words seem to match one theme, that is a warning that the theme is too broad or that one apparent member is a decoy. Compare the four with the most exact relationship and identify the word that has the strongest alternative home.
- Inspect structure and wordplay. Consider synonyms, words that come before or after a shared term, homophones, abbreviations, and common letter patterns. These are prompts for inspection, not a fixed list of category types.
- Change the visual arrangement. Use the in-game shuffle control, or copy the words onto paper in a new order. Players report that this can break the influence of the original layout. Treat it as an experiment rather than a proven performance technique.
- Commit only when you can explain the link. Say the category aloud or type it in your notes, then run the four-word test one final time. A guess based on “these feel related” is weaker than one supported by a single, repeatable rule.
How to separate a real group from a decoy
Prefer the narrowest relationship
Connections rewards specificity. “Things associated with water” is usually too loose; a relationship that describes exactly how each word belongs is stronger. Ask whether the same definition, construction or phrase applies to all four members without changing the rules halfway through.
Compare competing fours, not isolated words
When two possible groups overlap, temporarily mark both options and examine the eight words together. The correct set is the one that leaves a coherent category for the other words. Because the puzzle has one solution, a locally persuasive group can still be globally wrong.

Use the leftover board as evidence
After removing a tentative quartet, inspect the 12 remaining words. If the leftovers contain a clean trio but no plausible fourth member, restore the removed word that could complete it and reconsider the original group. This is a consistency check, not a requirement to solve groups in any particular color order.
Distinguish a phrase from a topic
Words may connect because they precede or follow the same word, not because they belong to the same subject. Try placing a candidate before and after likely shared terms. Likewise, a set may depend on sound rather than spelling, or on an abbreviation rather than the full word.
A disciplined way to handle the “last four”
If three groups appear solved and the last four are opaque, reverse the process instead of forcing a guess.

- Circle the four leftovers and list their obvious meanings. Do not stop at the first definition.
- For each leftover, add one alternate sense, phrase or sound. The goal is breadth, not a random list.
- Check whether one of the solved groups contains a word with a better alternate home. Move that candidate mentally and see whether the remaining words form a tighter quartet.
- Search for a shared word position. Test whether all four can follow or precede the same term, including common titles, expressions or compounds.
- Only then consider a hint. A controlled clue can reveal the type of relationship without giving away every answer.
Do not assume the final group must be purple simply because it is last. The color indicates the editor’s intended difficulty for a category, not the order in which you must solve it.
Use help without turning the puzzle into an answer key
The New York Times’ Connections Companion forum provides hints and comments, but the Help Center warns that comments may contain spoilers. Decide in advance how much information you are willing to receive.

A practical hint ladder is: first seek a category-level clue, then a clue that identifies one member or excludes a decoy, and only finally read the full grouping. Stop as soon as the board becomes solvable again. If preserving the day’s solving experience matters, avoid opening free-form comments before checking how much of the solution they display.

What happens after a wrong guess
A wrong submission is information. Record which word you were least certain about and which category assumption failed. Then return to the full board rather than trying to repair the same quartet by swapping words at random.
- One-word-away feeling: Recheck the least precise member first; it is often the decoy.
- Two plausible quartets: Find the shared word between them and test its alternate meaning.
- No category survives: Start with the words that have unusual spellings, multiple parts of speech or obvious phrase potential.
- Repeated near-misses: Pause for a visual reset, then write a one-line rule for each candidate group before submitting.
Do not treat a failed attempt as proof that the category was completely wrong. It may show only that one member was borrowed from another group.

The full archive begins on June 12, 2023 and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Archive play can affect some statistics but does not affect streaks, and an archive puzzle you complete cannot be replayed. Access rules can change, so check the current Help Center terms if an archive puzzle is the reason you are subscribing.
Practice without turning strategy into superstition
There is no established evidence that one checklist item guarantees a higher score. Shuffling, writing words down, searching for a fifth candidate and testing alternate senses are community-reported methods that you can evaluate for yourself.
A 2025 paper presented at COLING studied NYT Connections as a text-classification task. Its appendix describes a “Full Hints” condition in which participants were told when they were one word away from a correct grouping. That experimental setup does not show that any particular everyday tactic improves a player’s results, and it should not be treated as a consumer success rate. The available material also does not establish a suitable headline percentage for player performance. The Help Center provides no named statistic about how often players solve the game.

For useful practice, review a completed board and write down the exact relationship that separated each group from its decoys. Focus on the type of ambiguity you missed—alternate definition, phrase construction, sound, abbreviation or broad category—rather than memorizing a single answer.
A compact routine to keep beside the board
- Read every word twice.
- Mark possible groups, but label them provisional.
- State one exact rule for each candidate group.
- Search every word for an alternate sense or phrase.
- Challenge any group with a fifth apparent member.
- Shuffle or rewrite the board if the layout is anchoring you.
- Check the leftovers before committing.
- Use a hint only at the spoiler level you have chosen.
The goal is not to see a connection instantly. It is to make each guess explainable, testable and compatible with the entire board.
