Does Borderlands 4 have cross-progression?
It depends what you mean by “cross-progression.” Borderlands 4 has an official feature called Shared Character Progression that shares specified progress among your characters. Whether you can continue the same save by moving between platforms is a different question, and the official pages cited here do not confirm a transfer process or its limitations.

What Shared Character Progression carries over
According to the Borderlands Support article, Shared Character Progression can carry these categories from one character to another:
- Collectibles
- Activities
- SDU points
- Map progress
Completing an activity on one character completes it for the others. Existing character saves created before update 1.7, dated May 28, 2026, receive combined map progress retroactively.

Choosing the feature for a new save
For each eligible new save created from update 1.7, you can choose whether to enable Shared Character Progression. The choice appears after you select a difficulty and cannot be changed later for that save.
What happens when you join a co-op game
A player who joins without save data does not inherit the host’s progress. That player reveals map areas by exploring them.
Progress-loss warning
The support article warns that deleting all external save data, including the profile save, resets progression. Corruption of game data or the full profile save can also cause loss of Shared Progression, which Support says it cannot restore. These cautions concern progression loss; they do not confirm cross-platform cloud syncing or save transfer.
Can you play Borderlands 4 with friends on another platform?
Yes. The official FAQ says Borderlands 4 supports online cross-platform co-op for up to four players. Cross-play requires a free SHiFT account. Online play requires an internet connection, and online console play requires a separate paid subscription. The FAQ also says single-player activities can be played offline.

The FAQ lists PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with Nintendo Switch 2 also included in its platform information. The original launch dates were September 12, 2025, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and October 3, 2025, for Nintendo Switch 2, according to the 2K announcement. Those are historical release dates, not upcoming dates.

Do not assume that linking a SHiFT account enables save transfer: the FAQ connects SHiFT to cross-play, while the support article describes progress shared among characters. Neither source establishes that a character save can be uploaded, downloaded, or continued on another platform.
- Check the latest instructions on the official Borderlands Support site for a specific cross-platform save-transfer feature.
- Confirm that the instructions explicitly cover both platforms you use and identify any account, edition, or save requirements before changing or deleting save data.
- If no official instructions cover your setup, treat cross-platform save transfer as unconfirmed rather than relying on cross-play or Shared Character Progression as proof.
For platform availability and online-play requirements, consult the official FAQ. Buying the game on another platform, by itself, does not establish that a save can transfer.
