The more specific claim that he dies within the first 20 minutes originated in a pre-release test-screening leak and has not been independently confirmed by that interview.
Does Cole Young die in Mortal Kombat II?
Yes. GamesRadar+ reported that screenwriter Jeremy Slater said Cole dies during one of the film’s first fights against Shao Kahn. That post-release account supports the central spoiler—that Cole is killed early—but does not give an exact minute mark. GamesRadar+

Is the first-20-minutes timing confirmed?
No exact timestamp is established by the post-release interview reporting. The specific claim that Cole dies within the first 20 minutes appeared in a January 20, 2026 report by Maxblizz, which attributed plot details to an X account called MAJESTIC and described them as leaked test-screening information. The report does not independently authenticate the account or confirm that the underlying screening details are genuine. Maxblizz

So the careful distinction is: Cole’s early death is supported by the screenwriter’s comments as reported after release; “within the first 20 minutes” remains a leak-specific timing claim.

Why did the film kill off Cole?
Slater said the filmmakers wanted deaths that would surprise different parts of the audience. He described hardcore fans as having responded poorly to Cole in the first film, while suggesting that casual viewers could be shocked by the character’s death. His comments explain the creative rationale he gave; they are not independent audience research. GamesRadar+
Director Simon McQuoid framed Cole’s place in the sequel as an ensemble-balancing choice: the film was bringing in new characters and needed to make room for them. McQuoid praised Lewis Tan and said conversations about using Tan’s talent in the future were ongoing, but did not confirm a particular return. The Village Voice

Does Cole’s death mean Lewis Tan is done with Mortal Kombat?
Not necessarily, but no return is confirmed in the cited comments. Slater separately said he hoped Lewis Tan would appear again in the Mortal Kombat universe, while acknowledging that Tan was shortchanged in this film. That is an expression of hope, not an announcement that Tan—or Cole Young—will be in another installment. ComicBook.com
Keep the distinction clear: Cole’s fate in Mortal Kombat II is reported as a death; Tan’s possible future involvement is a separate, unconfirmed possibility.
