March 2026 console impressions favored capable PC hardware overall, but they predate the free Crimson Desert Enhanced update released on August 25. Later reporting also says Xbox Series X gained a 4K upscaling option in Performance Mode after PS5 received a comparable option. Those facts complicate a launch-era ranking; they do not establish a new overall winner.
What platforms are being compared—and when?
Pearl Abyss released Crimson Desert worldwide on March 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Apple Mac, Epic Games Store, and ROG Xbox Ally. The publisher’s platform performance specifications are dated March 10, 2026, and warn that PC results vary with hardware, software, and graphics settings. They are useful for understanding supported configurations, but they are not post-update performance tests.

The timing matters: Game Informer’s console impressions were updated on March 23, shortly after launch and an early patch. Pearl Abyss later released Crimson Desert Enhanced, a free update for existing owners on all platforms, on August 25. A comparison published before that update cannot by itself determine how the current versions compare.

What the platform comparisons actually found
PC: the preference in one dated comparison, not a universal result
In its March 23 impressions, Game Informer said a capable PC provided its preferred experience. That is an editorial assessment, not a controlled benchmark or a claim that every PC looks better than every console. Results on PC depend on the machine’s components, software, and chosen settings, as Pearl Abyss also cautions.
PS5 Pro: graphics modes make different tradeoffs
Game Informer described differences among PS5 Pro’s Performance, Balanced, and Quality modes, including resolution and frame-rate tradeoffs, and noted visual pop-in. Choosing a mode therefore means weighing smoothness against image detail; the impressions do not support treating “best-looking” and “best-playing” as interchangeable.
Xbox Series X: launch-era concerns and a later feature change
The same March impressions noted pop-in and image-quality concerns on Xbox Series X. In April, Windows Central reported that Xbox Series X received a 4K upscaling option in Performance Mode after PS5 received a comparable option first. That narrowed a specific feature gap, but it does not show that current console versions look identical or establish which has the better overall image.

Read the dated accounts in Game Informer’s updated console impressions and Windows Central’s report on Xbox Series X upscaling. Neither is a controlled comparison of all platforms on the post-August build.
How to judge which version looks better for you
A fair visual comparison needs to hold the important variables steady. Otherwise, differences can come from settings or display conditions rather than the platform itself.
- Use the same game build. Record the version number and compare after updates are installed.
- Compare the same scene. Lighting, camera distance, motion, and effects can make resolution or pop-in differences easier or harder to see.
- Identify the exact hardware and mode. “PC” is not one fixed configuration; on console, note the model and whether the game is in Performance, Balanced, or Quality mode where available.
- Separate image quality from smoothness. Look at resolution or reconstruction, frame-rate target and stability, and artifacts such as pop-in individually. A mode that favors responsiveness may not maximize detail.
- Keep the display conditions consistent. Use the same display and comparable settings when judging two versions; otherwise, the comparison is not like for like.
Pearl Abyss’s March 10 specifications provide the publisher’s stated PC, console, and Mac requirements, while the later update notice identifies the subsequent release. The published specs should not be mistaken for a measured, current-build platform shootout.

Which version should you choose?
- Choose PC if you have capable hardware and want the flexibility to adjust graphics settings. The March comparison favored this experience, but it does not guarantee an improvement on every PC.
- Choose between PS5 and Xbox based on your console and preferred mode if you want a fixed console setup. The available reports describe tradeoffs and dated concerns, not a conclusive current ranking between the two.
- Choose a mode for your priority. If you value responsiveness, favor the mode designed for performance; if you prioritize detail, consider a quality-focused mode. Check the in-game options on your system rather than assuming modes or results are identical across hardware.
Pearl Abyss’s Known Issues notice was dated September 18 and last updated September 21, 2026, and still listed issues under investigation. For any specific bug or platform problem, consult the current Known Issues notice; the word “updated” does not mean all listed problems have been fixed.
Buying a copy is separate from choosing a platform
Pearl Abyss announced physical Standard, Deluxe, and Collector’s editions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. That announcement does not confirm current stock or which physical formats are available in a particular region, so check the edition, platform, and local availability before buying.
