Cronos: The New Dawn makes a convincing case for combining survival horror with science fiction: time fractures shape both its devastated world and its puzzles, while scarce resources and creatures that merge keep survival at the center. The blend is strongest in its setting and temporal exploration, but it is not universally successful; one prominent review found combat frustrating and the story slow to develop its time-travel ideas.
How the science-fiction premise feeds the horror
Released on September 5, 2025, Cronos: The New Dawn is a third-person survival horror game from Bloober Team. It is available on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, according to the official launch announcement.

The game takes place in New Dawn, a fictionalized setting inspired by Nowa Huta, a real district of Kraków, Poland. Its story connects an industrial 1980s reality with a post-apocalyptic future. The player is the Traveler, an agent of the enigmatic Collective, sent into zones scarred by the Change—a cataclysm that disrupted time, memory and flesh.

Temporal fractures connect the two eras and alter what the player can explore, while the transformed world supplies the grotesque threats expected of survival horror. The genre combination is built into the setting and the player’s role, rather than resting on atmosphere alone.
#1 Best Overall
- ADAPT OR DIE: In a desolate world filled with ever-present danger, your survival hinges on your ability to strategise and plan ahead. You can manipulate temporal anomalies to clear a path through the desolate environment and you will have to scavenge for resources to replenish your limited ammo and supplies.
- DON’T LET THEM MERGE: The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others — through a grotesque process called Merging — to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- HARVESTER OF SOULS: Your mission is to locate key people from the past who perished in the ensuing apocalypse. Using your all-powerful Harvester, you can extract their Essences and have them accompany you into the future.
How time travel changes what you do
The official Steam description centers the loop on traveling back in time, extracting souls and surviving creatures that merge. Its command to “Burn monsters before they merge” points to a practical source of pressure: threats can become harder to manage if the player does not act in time. The same description frames soul extraction as part of investigating the apocalypse, tying the player’s work to the larger mystery.
Time also affects traversal. In Elie Gould’s September 3, 2025 review for PC Gamer, temporal disturbances let the player rewind parts of a map—for example, restoring a bridge or roof to open a route. Gould found these puzzles a welcome change of pace from combat. This is where the genre blend has a particularly clear payoff: science-fiction mechanics alter the environment, and solving their consequences gives horror exploration room to breathe.

- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.
Where the blend succeeds—and where it strains
Gould praised the atmosphere and scenery of Nowa Huta, as well as the temporal puzzles. The review’s reservations are equally relevant to the claim that the game is “masterful”: it gave Cronos 58/100, criticizing frustrating combat, stingy resource drops and a story that takes time to bring its time-travel ideas to the fore.

Those criticisms point to a tension in the design. Resource scarcity can make survival encounters feel dangerous, but if supplies are too limited or combat feels uneven, pressure can become frustration rather than suspense. Likewise, a world built around time disruption has a compelling hook, but players may need patience before that idea takes a prominent place in the story. The review is one critic’s assessment, not a verdict shared by every player.
Rank #3
- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror game where you fight the battle for the future in the past.
- Burn monsters before they merge together
- Deprive the living of their souls
- Learn or die
- soul collecting
The fairest conclusion is that the combination is distinctive and often effective, especially in the setting and environmental puzzles, but its execution is uneven. Whether it works for you may depend on how much friction you tolerate in combat and how willing you are to wait for the narrative’s temporal ideas to develop.
Difficulty options and what is planned
On February 13, 2026, Bloober Team announced that the Temporal Diver difficulty mode was live on select platforms, with other platforms to follow. The update also made the Iron Rider Traveler skin free globally after updating the game. Because the mode’s rollout was platform-dependent, check the relevant storefront for current availability rather than assuming it is live everywhere. Details are in the official update.
